Glad to see this is back open after not having been able to get in on our last visit. It's a little gem of a museum with a fascinating collection and very good staff. Very child-friendly too.

This military museum suffers in some ways by not being housed close to the other military sites in Winchester in that it is off the beaten track and takes a little effort to find it. It is housed in a beautiful 17th century building, which I assume was once the officers mess for the Regiment. It is free to enter, although donations are welcome of course. Somewhat sadly during the hour or so we were there no one else visited but hopefully that was an exception. The exhibits are very well laid out in date order from the Regiments inception up to the NI troubles. This is not the IWM so most of the things to view are relatively small but no less interesting for that and there are many great personal stories and experiences to read often with accompanying memorabilia. Al in all very worth while visiting whilst in Winchester both for tourists and those interested in military history.

Thank you for your review. Serle's House has had many incarnations over the years, Officers' Mess being one, but also the HQ for the militia and Regiment, and the museum has been here since 1934. We are pleased you enjoyed your visit, and hope you come back to visit again soon.

I went to this museum just before going to the nearby Green Jackets museum. It was similar in many ways—the same displays of militaria; but—no pun intended—was less regimented, and therefore more accessible and much more enjoyable. It was also free. The single volunteer staff member present was friendly and interested, and didn't give a damn about my camera. I would say that this museum is a much better better bet for the casual visitor than the Green Jackets museum, and if you've only the time or inclination to visit one such museum, I would recommend this one over the other.

Following a visit to the upper complex of the old Peninsular barracks I took the pleasant stroll down through the gardens to the Hampshire Regiment museum. Upon entering one is met by a collection of gurning red coated mannequins, which seems to promise a full history of the regiment that the museum doesn't quite deliver. The collection has some excellent items - a well preserved Grenadiers mitre, fine antique firearms, yet has no background to the actual origins of the original regiment. The curators would do well to look at how the Keep museum in Dorchester traces the origins of the Devon and Dorsets through the use of original engravings and copies of paintings with economic use of text.
The Great War exhibit is fairly comprehensive as were recent campaigns. It would have been great to learn more of the traditions of the regiment and its latest evolutions. One of the curators assured me that improvements were pending and I look forward to a return visit in the future.

We travelled to Winchester from Swansea to see the Royal Hampshire museum, and in all fairness we were not disappointed the museum section we wanted to see was the WW1 with an interesting in Gallipoli for which the Royal Hampshires were involved we found it so interesting and also having visited Flanders and the Somme this also was interesting well lit for a change as like some they are dark and have loads of badly positioned spotlights this was light and easy to get around it was not the biggest display I have seen but it was well worth seeing I felt, and the manager of the museum was a very pleasant gentleman to talk over what we had seen, would highly recommend it as a visit iff you go to Winchester

Smaller than the other military museums, yet doesn't skimp on pride. Of note to Aussies is the display of infamous Bush Ranger Ned Kelly's armor.

This small museum of memorabilia associated with the Royal Hampshire Regiments is quite fascinating. There is a room dedicated to the first world war and another to the second world war and especially some of the campaigns in North Africa. We were only couple in the museum when we visited.
The museum is accessed from Southgate Street and sits behind a pleasant memorial garden. We tried finding this museum from Peninsular Barracks Square and the other Military Museums and found the signposting to the Royal Hampshire Museum, down small pathways, quite confusing.
There was a volunteer curator in the museum, but unfortunately, he could not really help us with any of our enquiries and questions (my wife's father served with the Royal Hampshires during the second world war)

Thank you for your comments on the museum; we are glad you enjoyed your visit. I'm sorry we could not help you with your World War 2 queries - all service records are still held by the MOD and so we do not have access to them I'm afraid. Details of how to obtain copies of service records are on the museum's website under the 'Request Research' button.

A wonderful little museum and definitely worth a visit. Colin the curator is an absolute delight. He has a wealth of knowledge about all that is displayed in the museum and his enthusiasm for the museum is admirable. He should be truly proud of all he has achieved. Thank you Colin for all the help you have given myself and my daughter's with their school projects.
