We live very nearby and decided to explore the area on a very mild and sunny autumnal day. The castle grounds were spotlessly clean, well maintained, and best of all, very quiet. No payment needed to enter. There are a few picnic benches scattered around the grounds which would make for a very pleasant break in future. The grounds are... More

We went on a summers day last year and it was very hard to find and to park the car. But once that was sorted, we had a short walk to the Castle. Lots of interesting boards explaining the layout and all very relaxed surroundings. Nothing else to do but explore so bring a pack lunch as there are seating... More

Wish I had known before visiting that the castle would be closed at this time of year. The sign on the locked gate simply read "Closed" with no reason given. There was a tour guide there trying to give a group tour and even he didn't know. We thought perhaps we simply got there too early and tried again later... More

Wolvesey Castle if the old bishops palace. The castle is very ruinous but still worth a visit and its free of charge to enter.

An original portion of the castle was built around 1100 by the Bishop of Winchester, and the castle remained occupied by Bishops until the 1680's. Considering it's age and the centuries before preservation efforts were commenced it is incredible how much does remain. It was pleasant and interesting to wander about and note various details, assisted by informational signs for... More

It's old. It's quite big. It's near the city centre. Other than that, there's not much to write about. Maybe it's worth a quick wander around it you are in the city and have nothing to do. But don't make this a 'must do' stop.

Really good and interesting place to visit, could not believe it in the heart of the city. Worth taking the time to read all the info on the boards as we nearly missed part of the castle. Beautiful gardens and good weather made it a great place to visit

My wife and I were expecting to see a few ruins and little else, but we were pleasantly surprised! The remains of Wolvesey Castle are extensive and history boards around the site provide the story from when it was built by Henry de Blois, Bishop of Winchester. We thought it would take less than an hour to look around, but... More

A short, signposted walk from the cathedral. All in ruins, but plenty of information. Owned by English Heritage, but free entry. Why do I pay to be a member..?
