Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A Saturday evening outing to see The Westenders, a group of six singers who have performed in musical theatre in London and elsewhere, accompanied by four musicians.
The theatre staff were friendly and attentive, whether on front of house duty or collecting the empty ice cream cartons during the interval.
Sadly the theatre (stalls only for this show, circle closed) was not full, despite the well-earned reputation which the stars of the evening have earned over a number of years, but those of us who were there had a great evening.
Please support this lovely theatre - it's "use it or lose it", people of Hampshire.

Outstanding panto, as always! Absolutely brilliant acting, music and I cried with laughter. You can see the actors having so much fun with it and each other which is a pleasure to watch. I love the randomness!

It was a bit tricky to find. Maybe more signage from the town centre is required? However, the theatre was very beautiful and the seats were comfy. It all ran smoothly and the staff were kind and helpful.

Just a lovely theatre. We went to see Dinosaur World Live and the staff and venue were wonderful. So welcoming and helpful and a nice clean venue. Nice bar with a good selection of ice creams (!) and convenient location. In the future we will look to see whether a show we want to see is coming to Winchester and I can imagine it would be a lovely date night for me and my husband.

After watching Beauty and the Beast in 2018, I was desperate to see another pantomime at the theatre royal, Today I watched Aladdin and I have to say I was very shocked. There was an all white cast, and the show was set in China? They were wearing offensive clothing and making derogatory jokes about the Chinese culture. Getting the audience to say ‘Ni hao’ multiple times in a Chinese accent. Making fun of the surname ‘poo’ with lots of toilet jokes. The policeman was called poo and his side kick was a panda called pee-pee. They were also making fun of Chinese food, and taking the pic out of Chinese workers. There was also an inappropriate joke out police brutality, which is also not suitable for a family show. The political side of the performance was made very clear that they were against china. What about Chinese people that May have been watching in the audience? What about kids that were watching and now think it’s acceptable to go around saying ‘Ni-hao’ in a Chinese accent.
The acting was good and the songs were enjoyable, it would’ve been a great panto if it wasn’t so highly offensive. I really think the directors need to rethink the script and change it. Aladdin is usually set in the Middle East, not China. And because there’s a full white cast, it should’ve been set in a western country to avoid the racism.

My wife and I visited to see a touring production which was only at The Royal for two days - the auditorium was around 80% full, deservedly so for a good take on a Charles Dickens story adapted for a modern audience.
The staff are always helpful and charming, and the venue is warm and nicely presented.
The downside was that on an evening of heavy rain we arrived half an hour before the curtain up time, and as we entered we had to negotiate our way past a queue of people at the newly relocated cafe bar, which has been moved recently to the front of the building.
I assume this has been done to attract a daytime coffee and cake clientele, similar to a successful cafe in the Basingstoke theatre forum, and time will tell whether The Royal can achieve success on that front.
The theatre is a very attractive venue, with a good range of shows - well worth a visit.

It’s a lovely venue. Whilst it is small it packs a lot of charm and is just stunning to look at.
The seating area and cafe are decent enough although a little pricey.

The seats are more than comfortable for 2 or so hours. Although a bit of advice don’t sit in rows a-c as they’re right infront of the stage. Otherwise all the seats are good due to how small it is, the balcony/circle is pretty good.

Anyway have been here several times, for to its locality and convenience, I really like this theatre!

Our first visit was a triumph!
We saw their production of Dick Whittington which was funny, fresh and a great break from Christmas shopping...
It’s not the biggest theatre, but possibly the friendliest as we were shown to our seats by a super-helpful chap who clearly loves his job plus all other staff were smiling all the time.
There’s a seating area outside and a bar / short order cafe. The prices are reasonable but the ice-cream tubs are an eye-watering £3 each.
Places like this are a treasure and we’ll deffo visit again .

It’s behind you!!! 😃
