We did a half day trip from Lucksall down to Hoarwithy early in August and it was wonderful. It was slightly tiring, as we didn't hang around, but going downstream, the river did most of the work.
There were thirteen of us, including three teenagers and two under ten. The briefing was detailed and complete although a little hurried, but we were given a map with a list of way markers on the back, so it would be difficult to go wrong. The only part requiring any navigation was in passing an island and ensuring that we took the gentle rapids on the right hand side.
The scenery was stunning and incredibly peaceful. We saw jumping fish and lots of birdlife on the river: geese, ducks, swans, moorhens and a couple of heron.
All the members of our group were enthralled by the experience and felt completely safe because of the great organisation.
When I booked initially, we were advised that for our group we needed six canoes and so that is what we ordered and paid for. In the event, the way it worked out was that we only needed five. However, we were reimbursed for the difference.
I can't recommend this experience highly enough, especially if you enjoy beautiful relaxing countryside, a tiny feeling of adventure and are reasonably fit.

An excellent, fun experience. Superbly organised from meeting up, transporting to starting point, briefing, practice to canoeing down the Wye.
Ideal for novice and experienced canoeists alike. The beautiful River Wye was running high and the briefing taking us through it all, including what to do if capsize or end up in the water, left our group a little nervous (only 2 had previously canoed before), but the initial putting into practice what Andy had gone through whilst we were still in calm water at the start soon brought the confidence back. Andy kindly took some group photos, then we were off.
We went for the half day package, which gave us an 8 mile row back to Hoarswithy. The river was beautiful scenery, with friendly fishermen who both encouraged and laughed when we steered towards the trees or got blown off course by the wind!
The canoeing was gentle in places and hardwork in others - having successful negotiated the river we arrived back to Lucksall where Andy helped us exit the boats (the beach at Lucksall was no longer visible due to rising water).
Our group had a wonderful time and was the perfect end to our week stay in Herefordshire.
Thoroughly recommend booking a trip with Hereford Canoe Hire - great value for money, great organisation, great fun and great way to see the countryside from the river. Perfect whether you are a novice or experienced.

Four days of canoeing down the Wye River from Hereford to Monmouth. Stopped off at pre booked campsites along the way to break up a 54 mile journey. We had initially planned to wild camp but would have found this difficult to find without encountering 'PRIVATER LAND NOTICES" which seemed to be everywhere en-route where it looked feasible to land the canoes. Went with 3 others in the party, which I recommend, the river is by and large a tranquil one, but there are areas where assistance from others in the party could come in handy should you get into difficulty.
The guys were very accommodating at Hereford Canoe Hire allowing us to tailor our journey ( initial launch and pick-up at destination) . They ( HCH) showed respect to our prior knowledge of canoeing while at the same time ensured they imparted the basic rules and regulations that are crucial in any "potential dangerous pursuit". We are already planning our next trip which will start slightly higher up river so as we can lay claim to eventually "doing all the navigable river" potentially.

ThIs was our first time on the river, the booking system was quick and very efficient. Andy and Will are friendly. The safety briefing and demo before you start is thorough. All equipment, including a dry barrel is good quality and safety checks are done before setting you off in the water. We got to the finish point early so we're able to enjoy a bacon roll before being bused to our starting point.
The actual journey of 8.5 miles is brilliant, a beautiful part of the river, although the water level was very low resulting in us "beaching" once in the middle. There was much hilarity as my hubby had to get one foot out to push us off the rocks. Our dog had a great time too even when he caused me to have a minor panic attack when he suddenly decided to jump out for a swim.
All in all a great half day adventure for mum, dad, soon to be 12 year old and a dog.

We booked online a couple of days before the trip, for the 3 hour paddle from Lucksall Caravan Park. It was raining quite hard for the 0900 start. I rang at 0800 and Andy from Hereford Canoe Hire said we could meet at 1115 instead. Andy was on time and made us feel relaxed and also made us laugh, whilst still giving a thorough safety brief. After a quick paddle so Andy could see that we were able to handle the canoe, we set off down stream.
The river was quite low and very shallow in places. We had to negotiate several small rapids during the 8.5 mile trip. This added to our excitement particularly when we managed to run aground on one occasion. Don't tell Andy! We soon managed to get free and continue our paddle. There was an abundance of wildlife and the scenery was amazing with the autumn colours. We passed many Swans, Egrets, Herons, Canadian Geese and several species of duck to name but a few.
The trip ended on a gravel beach area at Tresseck Campsite, Hoarwithy. This is easily located on the right bank as it's just after the only road bridge on the journey. As a first Canoe experience my wife and I felt it was fantastic. Bring a Picnic, a camera in a waterproof pouch and a change of clothes, just in case! You won't be disappointed.
Our thanks to Andy for making this a great day and also to Will who returned us to Lucksall by minibus. We look foward to seeing you next time.

We couldn't recommend Hereford Canoe hire enough, our group has been canoeing with them on the August bank holiday for the last four years. Each year we've done exactly the same thing but since the river changes each time it never gets boring. We are always amazed at the stamina and dedication of all the staff, they have a perfect balance between the seriousness of making sure everyone is ok, knows the safety advice and isn't lost on the river and giving us enough freedom to have fun, stop for swims and get to our destination in our own time. The first day from Hereford to Hoarwithy is 17 miles, we then camp at Hoarwithy and canoe the following 8 mile day to Ross where Will picks us up, swings the canoes over his head with an ease in polar opposite to our aching arms and drives us back to the campsite and beer in the pub. Always a perfect weekend. Thank you HCH.

We used Hereford Canoe on Saturday for a Half day Canoe hire, Andy was very punctual and showed us where the finish point was then drove us 15 minutes to the start. Safety Brief was very thorough and Andy was very experienced on that part of the river and explained what to look out for along the way. All equipment and safety equipment was provided along with a detailed Map of the route. Andy was available via phone in case we got into any difficulties but the River was mainly calm and it was an enjoyable 3 hour trip taking in some good scenery along the way. Highly recommended and we will be back again. Amazing day out! Thanks to Andy and the Team. Roger and Chery

We had a fabulous time with Hereford Canoe Hire. The service from booking to finishing was fantastic. We were a group of 4, two adults with 2 children 5 and 7. The instructions and attentions were excellent. I’d highly recommend these guys whatever level of canoeing experience you have.
We’ll definitely be back.

Great fun day out, on a nice weather day. Did the 11.00am start and 4pm finish (11miles..) as 9.00 am was a bit too early for us.
Our Supersoaker water guns , one per canoe, were probably unnecessary as the paddle splashes were just as good.:)
Even a tipover in one of the rapids was highly educational and highly amusing to watch.. A blue waterproof barrel containing with dry clothes and phones , etc suddenly made perfect sense.
Thoroughly recommend it for a day trip to remember.

What a fantastic service we received from this firm: friendly, efficient, punctual and really understanding when the group needed to come off the river early.
The rep was super-organised and informative. He was in-hand whenever we needed him, and provided a really excellent service.
The canoes were excellent: did a great job of carrying the 6 of us and our kit the 25 miles we paddled over the weekend.
We will definitely be using this firm again.

Hi I live in Hereford City and want to book for four adults a half day trip.....this is a birthday gift to be used probably next year. What routes and choices do we have please?
Written 18 October 2016
Hi Elizabeth. Any and all of our trips can be purchased in voucher form as a birthday gift.
The most popular trip for this purpose is the half day trip from Lucksall to Hoarwithy. Roughly 3-4 hours of paddling, there is a lovey pub at the end where you can pause for a drink or bite to eat before we pick you up.
For 4 adults you will need 2 canoes, the cost for this for the half day is £90 inclusive of all equipment and transport.
Thank you very much for getting in touch and if you have any further questions please call on 01432 873020 or via the email address on our website
