About
The museum offers displays on two floors, charting the history of the museum and its early collections on the ground floor to the history of Hertford on the first floor. There are things to touch and play with as well as listening posts where you can hear people tell their own stories. The temporary exhibition gallery offers a programme of changing exhibitions throughout the year and the Jacobean style knot garden provides a tranquil retreat from the busy town centre. The museum shop specialises in a wide range of beautiful greeting cards, fossils and minerals, ethically sourced gifts and a vast array of in house publications covering a wealth of local history topics. The museum delivers a busy programme of events and activities for all ages throughout the year and runs a busy learning service for schools. Lifts allow access to all public areas and magnifiers are available for the visually impaired. Gender neutral accessible toilets and family toilet with baby changing facility.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a wonderful Museum located in the heart of the county town of Hertford. It has a mixture of local exhibits relating to Hertford and its history, along with some world exhibits collected by the founders which are fascinating. The Museum is typically open Tuesday to Saturday and also on a Sunday from 12 to 4pm.

The museum includes a range of exhibits including those related to the birth of the town and the Hertford pubs. The pubs, then known as Inns, once totalled 25 in 1620. At this time Hertford had more coaching inns that anywhere else in the country and with terminus for 5 coaches going to London, this makes sense. Of these Inns only 3 survive today. There is also a cool model of the castle and a Jacobean Knot Garden.
Entrance is free but donations are appreciated.

Had low expectations from a small museum and was impressed by the content and presentation. The write-ups about local resistance and protest movements were interesting. Liked the audios by local people about wartime and other topics. Some good mid-20c artefacts and everyday items were good and nostalgic. Thought my visit would be 15 minutes but spent an hour and will go back again as there is more to see and read. Altogether quite an ikoressive little museum.

I visited on a wet day and it was nice to go somewhere interesting to learn more about the local area and dry out a little.

I was encouraged to check in using the Serco Track & Trace app. The museum is free to visit although you can make donations by cash and also contactless.

The museum has lots of different things to learn about if you are an adult or a child. I also enjoyed the Jacobean garden.

The museum is very user friendly for anyone whether they are able to use steps or not.

The second floor has more to explore and I was interested in the Addis collection. I never knew there were so many different toothbrushes!

There is a small area to buy gifts and the staff were all friendly and welcoming.

It is free to enter with a recommended donation of £2. It has some weird and wonderful bits however does not really offer a history of Hertford as I was expecting - so a let down.
