About
St Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago. The building itself is a blend of architectural styles spanning a millennia and contains recycled Roman bricks from Verulamium. Of special interest are the 13th century wall paintings, a rare watching loft and the fully restored medieval shrines of St Alban and St Amphibalus, the priest who converted Alban to Christianity.

    Tour with Paul
Yesterday we attended the free 1 hour tour with Paul.. he was so knowledgeable and kept the whole group's attention during the tour. He takes you from the east of the cathedral to the west with so many facts along the way. Excellent tour, thank you Paul.

    Wonderful visit
St Alban's Cathedral has been on both of our bucket lists for quite a while. We enjoyed a very moving Choral Eucharist service and we're still exploring this wonderful building 2 hours later. We would definitely return and recommend

    The doves have flown in
The arrival of the peace doves in St Albans cathedral feels very timely. The art installation has been to several cathedrals in the UK including Chichester, Liverpool and Sheffield. Each time the installation is made again in collaboration with local people. In St Albans, 10,000 individually handmade paper doves are suspended above the Cathedral's historic Tower. Each dove contains a message of peace, love and hope, written by the local community groups and many school children. They change location depending on the cathedral, and in St Albans their setting in the historic tower - the oldest in the country is inspiring. It draws your attention even more to its impressive height. The cathedral is forward looking and ambitious in welcoming modern interventions into the historic setting. Also on show for a short time on the Wallingford Screen, Saints In Colour is a striking light projection which shows what it could have looked like before the reformation. The plain stone figures and their surrounds would have been vividly painted. The figures make more sense in colour, St Patrick in a green cloak and hat, and in the lower centre figure of St Alban himself. This runs three times a day for about 15 min. It looks at its best on a dull day outside. Not sure how long this will stay so don't miss it. And wondrous wall paintings is a permanent interpretation that is projected onto the three wall paintings in the nave. This also lasts for about 15 minutes, and really brings them to life. Without the projections you really need to have an interest in medieval history to engage with them. With the projection, you get a sense of what the experience would have been like for pilgrims in the middle ages. Its great the cathedral is embracing new technologies and ways to engage visitors. On the practical side its open daily, but worth checking online for services and special events which can close parts of the buildings for some times. Its also free to enter with donations welcomed and easy to make, but without pressure. The cafe was our only disappointment... On our December visit they had entirely run out of hot food at 13.20.... and last week there was nothing vegan - the soup was cream of mushroom. Not good for vegans or anyone with any dairy issues.

    Magnificent
Approached from the front, the cathedral building is not hugely impressive. However, the interior is both awesome and beautiful. We were pleased to find there was no attempt to extract an entrance fee or donation. This cathedral is every bit as impressive as Durham and well worth a visit.

    Morning stroll through St Albans
We were in area staying for a trip and passed through St Albans and decided to check out this wonderful place of worship. It is a beautiful cathedral steeped in history and is most definitely worth a visit whether you visit and look around on your own or take a guided tour. You won’t regret a visit

Great guided tour of the cathedral
The tour of the cathedral was led by the enthusiastic, knowledgeable and delightful Steven who lent us interested and intrigued for the hour. These free tours are definitely worth making the time for. They are free and last about one hour. Excellent use of time.

    Beautiful and historical
What a beautiful place to walk around n gathered the history of this place. Beautiful views all around as it’s situated in big garden. Not far from train station like 12mins walk. You found it spectacular place as soon as entered. History all around. Free entry and best you can get about this historical place is free tour guide. Such great peace inside. A big lake is part of the garden. There’s a cafe next door n gift shop inside the building. I spent mazing time there. Defo going back there again.

A brief history of time in the Cathedral!
Went on a FREE guided tour one Sunday afternoon in February. Absolutely fascinating .. An hour long but could have listened for longer. Our guide, Alan, was so welcoming, engaging and extremely knowledgeable. There were younger children in our group (8-12 year olds?) and they were able to follow it all and even ask questions. A fascinating walk around the Cathedral and ‘through the ages’ .. Will definitely return for more! Highly recommend

    Wow, just wow
Easy to walk to from the high street, but NOT easy to get to from the train station. St Albans is a great day trip from London, but do be sure to organize your trip, research local buses, and be cognizant of the 20 minute walk from the train station, then another 5 to the cathedral. Cathedral has some amazing volunteer staff, a cafe, & clean loos. They provide free volunteer-led tours quite often - just check the schedule upon arrival. Tons of history in this wonderful building.

    Excellent Tour in Wonderful Abbey
St Albans cathedral is around a mile from the main City station on foot. A closer option is St Albans Abbey station which is around half a mile away. There are free guided tours around the cathedral (three on Monday to Saturday and two on Sunday). These can be booked online. Our guide Marc was really informative. We heard of Alban’s conversion to Christianity by Amphibalus and his arrest and execution by the Romans who at the time were anti Christian. The abbey is the longest standing place of continuous Christian worship in Britain at around 1700 years. The building itself is magnificent and there are some marvellous stained glass windows. Some of the remains of both Alban and Amphibalus are contained in shrines in the cathedral and the remains of Robert Runcie are also buried in the graveyard. There is a pleasant cafe on site called the Abbot’s Kitchen. A very enjoyable and informative visit was had by all of our party.

This is the site of the tallest tower in England and the site of the burial of England's first Saint. From the outside it does not look as huge as it truly is. Inside it is also deceptive as the very long nave is punctuated by altars and screens so that you simply cannot see its full extent from any position. The high altar is breath-taking with its detail and statuary and was a highlight for me.

The Welcomer that I spoke to, said that the original Cathedral, large though it was, was regarded as too small by the Monastery that it served and was enlarged several times.
Another wonderful feature is the enormous expanse of green meadow or park in which it is set, where the Monastery was originally, quite unlike any Cathedral Close that one is used to.

For anyone interested, even slightly, in history and architecture, this is a "must see". It also has a spiritual resonance which connects one to the many generations of worshippers that have gone before. With my own Church closed in the time of Covid , it was wonderful to be able to re-enter a house of God again and pray there. Entrance is free, but anyone who feels that they can leave such a wonderful place without making a donation must be hard-hearted indeed.

Thank you very much for your lovely review. I am so glad you were able to talk to one of our volunteers, they really have a wealth of information to pass on. As Christians have been coming as pilgrims and worshipers for 1,700 years there does seem to be a special feel to the place.

As a keen Medieval History student, this Cathedral is perfect. The architecture and story behind the building is so rich in history that you will never run out of things to see. From the outset, all the staff were extremely kind and displayed wonderful passion for the building and its deep history. Our guide, Jean, was absolutely superb and so knowledgeable about the history- I was blown away with his depth of knowledge and expertise, as well as his friendly manner. I would thoroughly recommend people go visit, I could have happily of spent several days in there and the surrounding town.

An amazing building. I highly recommend using the cafe as another means of supporting the upkeep of the building, it has wonderful coffee and a variety of other food with lovely staff.
The cathedral is free to enter which is amazing for such a wonderful building. As if that was not enough I joined a free walking tour of the church with one of their knowledgable guides, incredible! The guide was tremendous I cannot thank her enough for a most enjoyable morning
I highly recommend visiting this amazing building, the craftsmanship on display from over the centuries is wonderful to see

This is purely a comment on St Albans as a concert venue. A lot of time, care, and money has been spent on the new visitor centre. Some new toilets have been installed yet they were still totally inadequate for concert numbers in a 20 minute interval.
Wonderful acoustics but, boy, your chairs are uncomfortable!

Fabulous cathedral, with plenty of historical interest. The fading wall paintings in the nave are brought to life with modern technology on a guided tour. The tour with Gary was excellent, he gave a great outline of the history and architecture of the cathedral and had lots of interesting stories. Well worth catching the tour.

I'm frequently amazed at religious architecture and actively seek it out on my travels but this building is a wonder. Inside and out I could have spent longer than the 45 odd minutes I spent wandering around. There are useful laminated reading materials provided near the main points of interest such as the seven martyrs. Read about Archbishop Oscar Romero in San Salvador shot to death in 1980 after speaking out against the military dictatorships controlling El Salvador.

We made an excellent family visit to St Alban`s Cathedral and were given a detailed tour of all interior by our comprehensive Tour Guide Lidia who knows her history on the meaning of the shrine and background to the martyred conversion of St Alban. We also had a very enjoyable hike around the former Roman park green spaces adjacent Ancient Museum : and this is one of the best kept public recreational places for families with adventure play apparatus etc. and focus on health and wellness during the pandemic. A thoroughly hallowed visit to St Albans that included new sightseeing fact-finding for Lukas Smith.

As locals and practising Christians we appreciate how beautiful and special the Cathedral is. To be honest, we are not too impressed with the new welcome centre: a desultory shop stocked with rather ho-hum goods and what appears to be a good deal of wasted space which serves as a route to elsewhere plus a series of rather ordinary displays about the history of the place. We called with family to have a cup of tea in the Abbot's Kitchen and were directed to 'follow the arrows on the floor' - which bypassed the kitchen: did we need to follow the arrows and find the entrance round the corner? No, we were informed by a rather flummoxed lady, just go over there to the kitchen. Three doors, none of which was really wide enough to negotiate a child's pushchair. Self-service or table service? There were no notices. Arrows on the floor suggested we should queue alongside the counter but no, we were informed, one should queue at 90 degrees to the counter (again no signs to that effect); others perfectly reasonably queued alongside the counter. And expensive: £8.65 for three teas and a Cola. To find our way out we were asked by flummoxed lady to exit through the entrance (and not follow the arrows to the exit). What an extraordinary muddle.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review your experience at the Cathedral. We are sorry that your visit did not live up to expectations. We take accessabilty very seriously and will consider your comments carefully. The welcome centre doors are indeed both the main entry and exit points at the east end of the Cathedral.

St Albans Cathedral is a key part of a visit to the city of St Albans. It is free to get in but it takes alot of money to maintain the cathedral so it's good to make a donation. Especially if you are lighting a candle.

There are lots of things to admire within the cathedral including the Nave Screen and the Wallingford Screen as well as the crypt of St Alban.

There is also a gift shop to get yourself a souvenir or a loved one. There are also toilets and a cafe to get something to eat.
