About
St Albans Cathedral is the oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain. It stands over the place where Alban, the first martyr, was buried after giving his life for his faith over 1700 years ago. The building itself is a blend of architectural styles spanning a millennia and contains recycled Roman bricks from Verulamium. Of special interest are the 13th century wall paintings, a rare watching loft and the fully restored medieval shrines of St Alban and St Amphibalus, the priest who converted Alban to Christianity.

    Difficult to get in!
Oddly enough the normal main entrance is closed and there was no signposting to the new huge entrance around the side.... I almost missed it, Lovely little cafe serving proper tea and cakes and frequented by locals. Absolutely Fantastic cathedral! Both are a must visit for the city.

    Wonderful & uplifting visit.
I visited the Abbey & Cathedral Church yesterday & thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Lovely warm welcome, very accessible, many diverse groups of varying ages using the cathedral & a super cafe for cakes & coffee! I decided to take a free tour led by Tony. He was very engaging & informative & I learnt a great deal. I was particularly impressed with the nave medieval wall paintings, brought back to life with clever technology of projectors. A really wow moment. Thank you for a great visitor experience in your beautiful sacred space.

    Fabulous!
Incredibly welcoming, staff were brilliant! Great shop and cafe. The guided tour was one of the best cathedral tours we've ever had (and we've done quite a few)! Michael who did the tour was so knowledgeable and was fascinating to listen to!

Lovely building, shame about the chairs
St Albans Cathedral is a stunning building and has lots of interesting features. However, we don’t live in the area and usually visit only for concerts. The lovely modern style chairs are excruciatingly uncomfortable to sit in for the length of a concert. Secondly, the usual problem of insufficient toilets for the numbers of people in the audience. What a pity that, in the recent modernisation, they didn’t put in a lot more.

Official guided tour, with some new features
Wandering around the Abbey church yesterday, as we have many times before, we were talking to one of the official guides. Apparently, the next guided tour was due, but there were no takers. So we 'joined' the tour, and had a lovely, quiet walk around with a great talk on the history and events in the church's history. Learnt a lot of new facts. Loved the new technology that used projectors to overlay images of what the all paintings on the columns would have looked like. It made the whole experience feel more complete. Our guide was very knowledgeable, and happy to answer our questions. A great experience in a wonderful building.

Fabulous St Albans Cathedral clock tower and bell tour
Fabulous tour with an expert historical rendition from tour guide Tony and supported by bell ringer David. The information delivered by Tony was both interesting as well as factual, he clearly has a warm appreciation of this magnificent building, parts of which are a thousand years old! To see the internal structure of the roof and bell tower really demonstrated the complexity and engineering design of this magnificent ancient structure. The views from the top of the building provided a wonderful 360 degree view of the City and surrounding countryside. This tour is an absolute must and I'm confident that you won't be disappointed! Be sure to visit the on site cafe which provided a nice environment as well as good coffee.

    Sense of Peace and Beauty
Beautiful stained glass windows. Picturesque ceiling. I had a sense of peace on entering the cathedral. It was lovely that dogs were welcome. Encouraged to take photos. Although the cathedral had free entrance. There were several places where donations could be made by debit/credit card. Souvenirs were quite expensive as a pen is £4.50, mugs £9.99 and £19.99. However there is no pressure to spend money. Several services were being held, as it was Good Friday. Many of the services were broadcast throughout the cathedral

    A fascinating place to visit
I'd visited as a child many years ago but couldn't remember it. This time, as a 62 year old who's fascinated by historic things, I was enthralled. The cathedral is huge, very impressive and it just seems to go on and on. There are informative signs dotted around, which we took the time to read. Even so, we aim to return and take a guided tour so that we can ask questions and learn more. We were also charmed by the choirboys who were rehearsing for evensong. Our visit was late in the afternoon and we'd previously visited the cathedral cafe. This is a nice extra, with a pleasant, calm atmosphere (when we were there) and there is a shop and well kept toilets. You can't park directly by the cathedral, but there is ample parking at The Maltings which is only a short walk away.

    A historical feast
With a warm welcome on arrival, we set out to explore this amazing building with all it's nooks and crannies :) built over several centuries with a change in architecture throughout, there was something historical to explore round every corner. Stunning stain glass windows and plenty of seating areas for quiet contemplation. It is free to enter and tours are also offered for free, no pre booking necessary. Voluntary donations are encouraged and needed to for the upkeep of the building. A good gift shop, decent toilet facilities, dog friendly and a lovely café available. Plenty of outside seating if you take a picnic and easy walking distance to City centre and other attractions. Well worth a visit.

Usually I love to visit this place when I come to St Albans for shopping, to find a bit of peace away from the madness of London. Today I would have given it -10 stars if I could. In the sanctuary, people wandering in with dogs (which feels highly inappropriate and disrespectful to me). In the Lady chapel, some idiot taking endless selfies and then sitting down - near the front - for a spot of voice practice, in case he hadn't commanded enough attention already. People conversing loudly. A whole section of the church cordoned off, not allowed in because a service was about to start. What do they imagine we'll do, take dogs in and converse loudly, as appears to be fine where the saint's remains are?! In Italy I have never experienced that, people are free to come and go as they please, and have a natural sense of what is respectful and what is not. Then, a whole other section out of bounds because there was a tea-party style "reception" for some artist. I felt highly unwelcome, experienced no peace at all, felt the vibe far more "Kings Cross Station"/Shopping Mall than anything like a peaceful place of prayer. Disclaimer: I am not a church goer, or even a "conventional believer". But I still deserve to get some peace in a place that SHOULD have it. Do better, St Albans Cathedral.

St Alban's Cathedral has been on both of our bucket lists for quite a while. We enjoyed a very moving Choral Eucharist service and we're still exploring this wonderful building 2 hours later. We would definitely return and recommend

Yesterday we attended the free 1 hour tour with Paul.. he was so knowledgeable and kept the whole group's attention during the tour.
He takes you from the east of the cathedral to the west with so many facts along the way.
Excellent tour, thank you Paul.

I joined my mum and her friends for a U3A Verulam tour of the abbey. Sheldon and Bridgit were great - lots of social history stories tied in with the history and architecture of the place. The illuminations showing the faded painted saints on the pillars were fab and hunting for snails, monkeys, hedgehogs and dogs in the stonework fun! Well worth a visit. Thank you!

Simple an amazing cathedral, huge, beautiful and as I walked in, I heard the Sunday sermon which added to the experience. Not religious but I appreciate the work and skill that made this.

A superb cathedral with a wealth of fascinating history with which the visitor is able to engage. The guides are friendly and ours went out of his way to make the story of the building come alive for us. The re-creation of the medieval wall paintings is completely fascinating.

This was our second visit to this amazing cathedral. It is free to enter and see a building that has stood the test of time. Beautiful wall paintings that have slowly faded , norman arches, and a shrine to St Alban where you can find a few minutes of peace where countless others have done over many, many years. I always feel part of history walking around this place. There is something very spiritual about it.

Almost incomprehensibly beautiful; to be somewhere so serene and connected to thousands of years of history (for example Roman bricks building part of the structure) is transcendental. Its simplicity allows for the glory of the light to shine through and encourages a sense of meditativeness. Indescribable and profound.
