This remarkable building, housing the museum's vast collection, has lived through six centuries of the city's history. Rebuilt in its current form in 1373, it stands today as one of Canterbury's finest surviving medieval buildings. On arrival visitors are taken on a journey through time from the days when mammoths walked our coastlines to the Second World War bombings in Canterbury. From Anglo-Saxon treasures and rare Tudor finds to the 'Invicta' steam engine and even the original Bagpuss, this double-story museum and its collections capture the eclectic character of Canterbury and the wonderful things that make it the historical and cultural centre it is today.

I brought my daughter here as a treat and she left a very happy little girl. We saw bag puss and the changers!! She had no idea who they were but she happily sat and watched bag puss in the little tv. Will come back loads!!

This is my tip for any visitors. It's probably a great museum, but the opening times are erratic. Please check before you make a long trip. We live 4 hours away, and seeing the Clangers was high on our list of things to do. It wasn't open over our 4 day visit, including a weekend, despite being open last month... More

There was so much here to see and learn. I wish I had gone to the Roman museum before I had come here.

We bought a ticket for this and the Roman Museum, went there first, and then came here, which is the best way to do it as this museum picks up the story after the Romans. The building itself is magnificent, and used to it's best to show the history of Canterbury. Lots of activities for children, and informative, not dry... More

This is great for children and has lots of activities to keep them happy. We spent about 2 hours with a five year old in here any he didn't get bored once. We saw Bagpuss and Ivor the Engine which brought back lots of childhoo memories. A really good day out.

This is by far the best attraction in Canterbury despite not being open year round. The museum is superbly organized, interesting, covers a very long timeline of history, and does it very well. The place is superbly restored and maintained, and well explained reference its role in history. See this place first to understand everything else you're going to see... More
