Originally constructed during Napoleonic times in preparation for a possible invasion, Chatham's Fort Amherst was also used as a civil defence centre in both world wars. The Fort has been in a near constant state of restoration since the 1980's by the Fort Amherst Heritage Trust, a charity who works hard to manage and maintain the vast site whilst sympathetically returning its grounds and buildings to their original state to ensure Britain's largest Napoleonic Fortress can be enjoyed by all.

We visited Fort Amherst while staying with our family in Kent. The fort is massive and we had a good walk round it and there were some really good views across the River Medway towards Rochester. The grounds were beautiful and extremely well maintained. There is a tunnel tour run by volunteers but we were too late for that on... More

I came across this by accident walking across the Lines. The person I was with has lived in Medway for more than a decade but was unaware of the Fort. Remarkable! I just wandered around drinking it in and letting my imagination wander. I really enjoyed the discovery.

I have to say the staff are ok in here but the whole restaurant is FILTHY DIRTY. The plastic tablecloths have seen better - and healthier - days, the floor is rotten and the cutlery doesn't even look washed, I was very careful not to allow my sons hands to touch anything in here. They leave their stock in the... More

I went here for my birthday and loved it. We went on the tunnel tour and was shown around by Bill. He was very engaging, fun and interesting. He knew so much about the tunnels and told us in such a way that I still remember the information. He also made us laugh a lot. It was excellent value at... More

Visited today where a ww2 themed tunnel tour was taking place. Guides were dressed in period costume and made the tour all the more interesting. Plenty of areas and period weaponary to explore with great views across Chatham. Free to explore the grounds, but the tour costs. Parking somewhat limited though. Great for picnics. Well worth the visit.

This is very interesting , you have never seen anything like this , what a place to visit , this gives you a good look into how Chatham used to be . Very nice Café also here . A bit creapy in some of the tunnels , wouldn't fancy being in those on a dark night .

A group of 14 of us cyclists called in today for breakfast. At the Fort Amherst cafe, you will get a friendly welcome, and a really decent breakfast, served up at perhaps the best price in the area. The bathrooms are well kept, as in nice and clean. Whilst visiting, check out the literature, which is available , on the... More
