The Roman Painted House is a testimony to the hard work and dedication of volunteer archaeologists and fund-raisers working against the odds. The site is bigger than it appears from the outside, and would be much bigger still if it was possible to continue excavating under the surrounding modern buildings. This is a real, old-fashioned museum, in the best sense.... More

If you love Roman stuff don't be put off by the appearance. It is run by very knowledgeable volunteers and is a fascinating piece of Dover's history. Lots to look at and the ruins are very impressive, especially considering Dover's history. The site deserves proper funding to show respect for its importance.

Although I need to pay to visit, I felt it is a good contribution of mine to this country I visited, especially when some major museums are free. I have got the chance to touch on some of rocks on display at the entrance. It was quiet when I visited and I took my own sweet time reading the explanation.... More

The best preserved Roman wall paintings north of the Alps- in Dover! Incredible. What has to be appreciated here is that, against all the odds, somehow the archaeologists and people of Dover managed to erect a building and put on public display this incredible find instead of the Council getting its way and building a car park. It certainly is... More

One of our party loves Roman ruins and insisted we go to this little museum. We arrived about 15 minutes prior to the opening time but one of the women working there let us in. She turned on all the lights and allowed us to start out visit. The exterior is small looking and the first floor has the appearance... More

The Roman Painted House is situated just off the main thoroughfare and from the outside is deceptive to what lays beyond the doors. Go inside and you will find a wonderful part of Dover history presented and run by volunteers who are lovely and willing to answer any questions. You can buy souvenirs and there is lots to see so... This was not quite what I expected but was amazed all the same. The site is inside a building with a walkway around the Roman house ruins. You can still see the paintings on the walls. very interesting.

This volunteer run establishment is well worth a visit. It's not far from the Dover Museum. Good explanations about the building, its discovery and excavation. There are reconstructions of the wall paintings.

just a lovely example of what volunteers can do to save historic artifacts and sites. This was discovered during excavation and saved by the Kent Archaeological Rescue unit and run by volunteers. Open April to August except for Mondays. Part of ancient Dover - it's one of many sites -but a very interesting one. If you go to Dover try... More

well worth £3 to visit this but a shame you cant take photos to show your friends, its run down but maybe thats to go with the show of the Roman ruins, nice commentary to tell you the history of this, and well worth a visit.
