Had a very enjoyable couple of hours visit to The Dover Museum. I guessed the Bronze Age Boat would be amazing.........which it was but they also have some very important artefacts across 3 floors. At present there is an exhibition on the 1st floor covering Dover's role in Operation Dynamo; The evacuation of BEF from Dunkirk. Although entry is free you are still expected to pre book because of Covid restrictions.

We sorta stumbled on this place while walking through Dover. What a pleasant surprise. Very informative museum filled with some nice visual history of the area. Wish we had more time and we'll need to go back to take the time to read what we missed.

I live close to Dover and like many other local people I feel I am guilty of not getting the best from what Dover has to offer. My brother recently came to visit for a week and I needed to find places to take him during a time when many National Trust properties etc were closed for winter. Somewhat reluctantly I suggested we visit Dover - taking in the White Cliff Walk, lunch in a pub (The White Horse) and Dover Museum. We had a most enjoyable day. A beautiful walk. Food in the pub, which was very good and a lovely traditional pub atmosphere, followed by a wander over to Dover Museum. I confess I did not hold out much hope for the museum. I could not have been more wrong. The staff were delightful and greeted us with the news that the entry was FREE! Hard to come by these days. The exhibits were not the kind of tired old relics one might expect of a town museum. It really brought home to us what an important town Dover has been over history. We spent far more time here than we expected, finishing with a jaw dropping surprise. On the top floor is an exhibit that no sane person could fail to be astounded by. The Bronze-age Boat. This beautifully preserved large boat is an absolute marvel. 3500 years old, and found buried in the mud on a building site a decades or so ago (I forget when but the clothing of the people in the film of the time suggests the 1980's). I highly recommend anyone visiting Kent or who lives within reach, to go and visit this exhibit. It is truly astounding and is in fact the oldest seagoing boat in the world. Thank you Dover for a surprisingly great day!
