It's a marvel of engineering how they constructed 3 stairways. Able to walk all round top area visiting batteries. Accessible from top road or through the pathway directly to the fort which is open only on set dates. Easy walking throughout but hilly in places....More

A wonderful attraction to visit and experience. A fantastic civil engineering marvel dating back to Napoleonic wartime construction. Sadly open access is restricted as a response to Health and Safety issues although there are supervised Open Days at fairly regular intervals for the public to...More

Another part of the Western Hts - the main entrance! a very cleaver construction - 3 spiral saircases straight up to the old parade ground. 3 separate stailcases so that Officers, NCOs and the troops would never meet on the stairs!!!

Visiting dover and by chance and the grand shaft was open , what a unique gem and ran by fantastic people, david and jay where very knowlegable .

We came to visit this grand napoleonic piece of history and we were truly amazed. The stairs tired us out a bit being pensioners so it's not for the feint of heart. I did truly love showing my wife the grand shaft...

Do the stairs up and down a few times. It's a lovely spiral staircase, great history behind it and wonderful pictures to take.

You can only access this shaft if you go into the Dover castle tunnels, very interesting and informative.
