About
Your tour starts with a short film show in a 150 year old Victorian Railway Tunnel before heading off into purpose built Air Raid Precaution tunnels under the town of Ramsgate. Hear about the “Mad Mayor” who saved the town Discover how the tunnels were built See where a town below the town evolved Listen to stories of life underground. Please ensure you check our web site for tour times before travelling as these do change throughout the year and we strongly advise you to pre book to ensure you can get onto your chosen tour. We are dependant on volunteers to run tours, on very rare occasions we may have to cancel tours at short notice. Due to the uneven and occasionally rough nature of the tunnel floor, sensible shoes should be worn for the ½ mile underground tour, with warm clothing strongly encouraged as the temperature remains at a constant 11ºc. Under 16's must be accompanied by an adult. There are no public toilets on site but public toilets are within a few minutes walk.

Great experience, very interesting and informative. The tour guide is very knowledgeable on all things tunnels and war!! We took all our kids and was educational without them realising it! They still remember the facts learnt that day. Great value for money, run by volunteers, fab experience!

Great visit, fascinating piece of social history! 😄👍🏻
Visited on Sat morning at opening time. Bruce was our volunteer tour guide. He was excellent. Great insight into the tunnels and the vital part they played keeping civilians safe and providing accommodation for those that lost their homes during World War II. It was a fascinating piece of British social history! Bruce was very knowledge, made it fun and was happy to answer questions. His tour really helped bring it to life for us. Well done and thank you Bruce! 👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

    Fascinating Experience
Visited the Ramsgate Tunnels on Saturday morning with three of my walking Football team mates for the 10am tour by tour guard Bruce. We started off with a nice introduction and a short video giving an overview of the history and whetting our appetite for the hour plus of walking that was ahead of us. I don't want to spoil it for future tourist other than to say it was a well worth it learning experience and one I would recommend.

    Well worth a visit
Really enjoyable experience. We had an excellent guide who had a comprehensive knowledge of the caves and the area around it. Well worth a visit, albeit bring a fleece with you as it is a little chilly as you’d expect for a tunnel! Nice cafe as well and brilliantly situated just by the beach.

    An unexpected discovery
If you do nothing else in Ramsgate, do this tour. A fascinating and unexpected discovery which brings great credit to the volunteers who obviously have a lot of passion for the social history that's so vividly brought to life here. Our guide was Bruce. He gave us plenty of information in a relaxed and committed way that made you want to go back and find out more. We will --and take the grandchildren next time!

A must see on your visit to the Kent coast
A terrific tour, brought to life by Bruce, an excellent guide. The story of the tunnels is incredible - and brilliant that we can see and feel a little of what life in the tunnels may have felt like. The museum is small, but gave us a real sense of what life was like during the second world war. A delightful tea room and souvenir shop all staffed by a very welcoming and friendly team of volunteers. A great stop for a couple of hours.

    A wonderful your
Visited with my wife and had a tour led by Darren. The amount of detail he could provide was very informative whilst remaining easy to listen to. The history behind these tunnels is amazing in itself and a great project completed prior to WW2 that without doubt saved the life of hundreds of Ramsgate people. Possible too that my wife's grandfather , a miner from Betshanger days, was one of those involved in doing the digging. Great value for money. Thanks Darren.

Understanding the history behind the tunnels in Ramsgate, and history of WWII
Our Scout group visited the Ramsgate Tunnels and stayed overnight. The kids loved it as much as the adults. The two guides, Darren and Guy, were an endless source of amazing information and fun. I would highly recommend this as a day visit, or an overnight for Scouts, Guides, and similar groups. Fantastic.

    Overground Underground Tour was great
Went on the Underground Overground Tour. Max, the lead guide was excellent. Really knew his stuff, ably assisted by Martin and Barry. The tour lasts about 2 1/2 hours and there's quite a bit of walking, but well worth it. The tour really brings home the length and extent of the tunnels under Ramsgate. Note: you have to book this tour in advance and the tour starts at the Sailors Church on the southwest side of the Marina NOT at the normal Ramsgate Tunnels entrance. The first part of the tour is above ground - the last 30-40 minutes is below ground descending into the tunnels via a hatch and short ladder in Arklow Square with hard hats and torches provided. The tour ends in the railway tunnel, with a nice and very reasonably priced cafeteria and a small museum. Overall, a brilliant tour, very informative, plenty of opportunities to ask questions and started and finished on time. A masterpiece, great value and thoroughly recommended.

This is an interesting tour into the underground tunnels and it’s informative. My main criticism was our tour guide Paul, although he really knows his stuff we stood way too much just listening to him drone on. The tour is supposed to last an hour and a half but ours was two hours. There’s not a lot of different things to look at, all the tunnels are very much the same. A few odd construction shafts and an escape hatch. The underground accommodation was interesting but is at the end of the tour by which time your feet and back are aching from all the standing still. I appreciate all the staff are volunteers and are clearly committed to the cause. I had been wanting to visit this for ages but I was a bit disappointed tbh. Other friends had a different tour guide and found it great.

My daughter's been studying WW2 at school so we thought she would be interested in this experience but I had underestimated how interested I would be. What a hidden secret, having lived in Thanet for most of my childhood I hadn't even realised this history existed. The guides were so informative and you really get value for money. Would definitely recommend!

A fascinating experience - treading the path of where the people of Ramsgate took refuge during the bombing in WW2. Our guide was very knowledgeable and informative. The video beforehand was well put together.
It’s a lot of walking on uneven ground but if you have an interest in learning about WW2 and how it affected real people. I highly recommend it.

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour today (Sunday 21 April). The two tour guides were both really friendly and knowledgeable, both happy to answer any questions we or others had. The history of the tunnels was really interesting and despite living in Kent my entire life, a history we knew nothing about. It was great having both lit and unlit sections. The museum was also really informative as were the reconstructions of living quarters in the tunnels during the war. It was a great way to spend an afternoon. The tunnels aren't that high (it is highly recommended that those 5'10" and above wear a hard hat which are provided free of charge) or wide so if you have claustrophobia you may not like the tunnels but at no point did we feel closed in as the tunnels stretch out in front of you for most of the time. As stated on their website sturdy footwear is best as the floor whilst generally smooth is uneven and the tunnels are cool, the guide said about 10 degrees Celsius year around so you'll need something to keep warm.

I will be going back with others and recommending the tunnels.

We definitely recommend this tour. Very interesting and professionally run. Our guides Charlie and David were very knowledgeable and passionate. We learned a lot and it was very entertaining. We would recommend management to introduce a minimum age limit for kids taking part to the tour as well as rules preventing kids from handling the torches.

Really enjoyed our visit today , our guide Martin was very informative, and gave a real insight into the history behind the construction and use of the tunnels. It certainly gave us information to learn and understand about those times.
Very well organised and attention was made to safety of the group.
For the price it was very good value indeed
