THE FERENS ART GALLERY IS CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR MAJOR REFURBISHMENT AND WILL REOPEN EARLY 2017.

Opened in 1927, the award winning Ferens Art Gallery combines internationally renowned permanent collections with a thriving programme of temporary exhibitions. We also run a lively education and events programme that includes tours, talks and art workshops.

The gallery's first-class permanent collection of paintings and sculpture spans the medieval period to the present day. These include European Old Masters, particularly Dutch and Flemish, portraiture, marine paintings, modern and contemporary British art, including video. Highlights include masterpieces by Frans Hals, Antonio Canaletto, Stanley Spencer, David Hockney, Helen Chadwick and Gillian Wearing.

Nothing fancy, just quality refurbishment has given this gallery a crisp and stylish feel. We draw a veil over the contents of the 'gift' shop (I doubt whether the curators had much say over the buying decisions) but the coffee shop and restaurant offerings were delicious and good value. The Victorian and Edwardian collection is powerful, the contemporary art less... More

I spend a lot of time here and I am pleased it has reopened after its refurbishment. It's permanent collection is great and the Open Art Exhibition this year is very good, much better than it has been for many years. If you like art pay it a visit, it's worth a detour to see. Don't, however expect lunch, the... More

After spending millions on it's renovation Feren's art gallery has reopened with a more open brighter feel. For those used to visiting before the changes don't worry. the stone statue of the sheep and the giant lion paintings are still there. The open exhibition was on when we visited and what a diverse range of excellant things there were to... More

What a great place to host major events as part of the City of Culture. You get used to paying for entry to places like this, so getting free entry into a brilliant gallery was superb. The Open Exhibition was particularly great and we will be back.

Love the new look to Ferens gallery, there have been some really good updates. I particularily loved the two gallery rooms showcasing local artists work, some I grant you are far better than others but so interesting to see the diversity of media used, i loved that. The cafe looked really great and I have heard lots of good reviews... More

Ferens Art Gallery has been closed for some time to undertake a complete make-over for the Hull, City of Culture so we were curious to see the changes. They were not too obvious but it is clean and fresh and the exhibits are all well presented. Apparently now it has temperature control etc so will be able to host more... More

A great gallery with free entry in the centre of hull. We liked the gallery of buyable art. Ranged in price from a few pounds to a few thousand. A room with drawing materials is there for kids. We liked for 20 mins

I really enjoyed my visit to the newly reopened Art Gallery and am looking forward to going back throughout the year as the exhibits change, not a fan of all the art exhibited but thats the point each to their own taste and through the culture of art everyone has something to enjoy

Visited to see the changes made. I was not disappointed. This gallery is somewhere that deserves visitors. There are some brilliant pictures- old stock and new exhibits and some for sale. The cafe and coffee shop are now situated in the same area. It was lovely to see it busy. It was worth a visit back to my home city... More

The Ferens had been closed for a long time for a complete refurbishment for Hull City of Culture. They've done a good job. The gallery is beautifully set out and the art work and sculptures are wonderful. The local artists exhibition has also made a welcome return. I'll be visiting more frequently from now on. Sadly, I wouldn't recommend the... More
