- Charley291291Kingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom113 contributionsBrilliant visit after schoolWe often visit the deep with my one year old during the day but my 6 year old was feeling a little left out. Keen to avoid busy times on a weekend and the upcoming Easter holidays, we promised her a trip one day after school. We got there for about 4.15 and it was so lovely and quiet. What a wonderful time to visit. There is still plenty of time to look round minus the crowds. Even had chance to chat with staff who told us some interesting facts about what we could see in the tanks. The new jellyfish area is really good and a favourite of both kids. The bonus of it being quiet too was being able to go in the lift where the big tank is at the end. Quite often we have to give it a miss due to large queues but after school seemed like a perfect time to visit! Thanks for your lovely feedback Charley! We hope to 'sea' you again soon!Written 7 April 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited March 2023Travelled with familyWritten 30 March 2023
- CharleeCheshire, United Kingdom2 contributionsDisappointing visit not many sea lifeWe visited the deep in a rainy day (midweek) with high hopes and thinking it would be quiet as it was not during school holidays . However a big school party arrived at the same time as our booked slot (11am) and made the visit quite unpleasant as they were very loud and kept running into my wheelchair. The deep itself didn’t feel like it had many tanks or actual fish to see and was a lot more set up for educational visits with many exhibitions . As this was a trip for my young niece there wasn’t many tanks she could look at and the main tank was hard to see any sea life in them at times. The tunnel was so small and crowded and we saw no sea life again using the glass lift which again took a while to get into due to the queue that had formed. As I am a wheelchair user and we had a buggy to we had no choice but to wait for the lift as this was the only way to also exit the deep .Overall our experience at the deep was quite disappointing .Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and we are sorry that you didn't enjoy your recent visit. We strive to be a visitor attraction the appeals to all. There are almost 3,500 fish at The Deep, and approximately 5,000 animals overall are housed here. The average visitor spends approximately 2-3 hours inside the attraction - this is based on taking in all of the live exhibits, infographic panels of interest and catching some of the daily highlights. Our large Endless Oceans display has plenty of impressive aquaria on display which includes the UK's only pair of Green sawfish, Loggerhead sea turtles, sharks and rays. There are also several smaller species of fish in this display. In addition to this The Deep has over 50 other exhibits teaming with an array of fish, invertebrates, amphibians and penguins, so we believe that there is a great variety of animals on display for all of our visitors to enjoy. As a conservational and education attraction we do attract many school visits during term times and the noise level is something we have little control over. We do advise to our customers that our quieter periods are after 2pm when the schools have started to depart. We are open until 6pm so this still gives plenty of time for visitors to enjoy the attraction. You ticket allows you unlimited returns for 12 months so we do hope you will take advantage of this and return at a quieter time. Should you return, speak to a member of our crew if you don't want to wait for the underwater lift, we can then help you to exit without returning to the 3rd floor. - VeggievampireRotherham, United Kingdom62 contributionsMy 3 year old loves it!We’ve visited The Deep a few times over the last year. I think it’s brilliant that you get a season pass with your ticket. We like to spend time looking into the tanks as sometimes you have to wait to spot the different sharks, rays, turtles, etc and these may be missed if rushing round. We’re excited for the new cooler seas exhibit to open. The only downside is having to pay extra for parking. Tip: if you can manage the stairs at the end you will see into the main tank a lot more than if you go up in the lift. Thanks for your feedback Veggievampire. It's great to hear that you enjoyed your visit to us. Our Cool Seas area is now open and looks fantastic! Just so that you are aware, unfortunately, the car parking charges are imposed by our local council. We hope to 'sea' you again soon! - AngelaHyde, United Kingdom32 contributionsFamily fun at The Deep.We are a varied age party from two to seventy. It was easy for all to access and enjoy. The kids loved the animals, starfish, rays, jellyfish, penguins. The adults the details and commentary around the exhibits. There is something for everyone. The main open aquarium is phenomenal. Such a great place. Felt like we had absorbed a marine biology degree at the end. The kids went into overload at about the two hour point. Adults could probably stay all day. It's lovely to hear that you all enjoyed your visit to us. In the end, you can go on a glass lift and see the whole tank. The queue was really long so we decided to walk up the steps which was actually really good as at the top of each set of stairs, you could see into the tank. - CharlotteGrantham, United Kingdom22 contributionsGoodWe had a lovely time, however there was no access to boiling water for our baby daughters milk when we asked. We were told to use the coffee machine which didn’t have boiling water in (we have a flask which can read the temp) and they said they do not have a kettle to use. Otherwise a great day outThank you for taking the time to leave us your review, please see the response below from our Food and Beverage Manager: I’m sorry to hear of the problems that you had on your recent visit. We do have access to boiling water from kettles but we do not allow those to be used by customers from a safety perspective. The member of of team should have been able to help with this, my sincerest apologies I will sign post our crew back to these items for any future issues. Should you ever not be happy with the service or response please ask for me by name on your next visit. - IndiTheBullAshington, United Kingdom160 contributionsWhat an aquarium *should* beCame here in July as part of a weekend away with my SO. We happily spent upward of 5 hours here, went around the whole place twice and sat in front of some of the exhibits for a while. Those less inclined would likely spend maybe 2 hours here. The thing that impressed me most was the excellent use of space. It looks small from the outside but thanks to clever layouts it seems far bigger. The whole exhibit snakes around the main tank which is 3 stories tall, you don't notice it immediately though as you only get small glimpses into the tank until you're about 1/2 way through. Display boards and screens give excellent information on conservation and education efforts both locally, nationally and internationally. We ate in the restaurant which is located on the top floor, 8 flights of stairs or a thankful elevator trip. Food was ok for canteen food, we both appreciated the effort to preserve their environmental message with use of bio-plastic an paper products. More than reasonably priced considering attraction tax. As an added bonus, you can return for free int 12 months with your ticket. The one downside really is that we could have easily spent all day there but the maximum parking time is 5 hours.Thank you so much for your lovely review! It's great to hear that you enjoyed your visit! We hope to 'sea' you again soon! First visit, having been meaning to go for some time. Absolutely First Class. Not particularly into aquariums (yes I know this is a submarium) but this was excellent. First time seeing live sharks and being buzzed by a stingray was thrilling. The lagoon pool with very accessible, beautiful fish was something to behold. Nice cafe with great views. Would recommend and will go back with our 12m pass. Well done to all involved.

The Deep is officially known as a "Submarium", not just an "aquarium". Designed by Sir Terry Farrell, & funded by the UK National Lottery millenium commision, it opened in 2002 to become Hull's most popular attraction. This is not just an attraction, it is also a conservation project, housing over 3500 marine creatures, some of which are endangered in the wild. The main tank contains over half a million imperial gallons of water, in which you can see several species of shark, also a pair of Sawfish, which are extremely endangered in the wild, plus many other creatures. There are many other watertanks of various sizes within the building. The tour is set over several floors, the main tank being the central attraction, it's not unusual to see divers in the tank, feeding the various creatures.information about the marine species & their environment is everywhere. Everything is family orientated, I guarantee, children will be mesmerised. There are 2 cafe's in the building, the main one is near the entrance, which serves hot food as well as many other choices, the second, smaller cafe is halfway around the tour. There is a large gift shop with plenty of gifts for children & adults. It is advisable & very easy to pre-book online. Prices:- Adults-£21.00. Children 3-15yrs-£16.25. Child under 3- Free. Full time student, NUS proof must be given- £19.50. Senior 60+- £19.50. Essential carer- Free. All tickets are annual passes, so you can return as many times as you like within a year. Overlooking the Hull river & Humber estuary, The Deep is a beautiful, impressive place to visit, I thoroughly recommend it.

Entrance is a bit pricey but this is a world class aquarium. Really brilliant. The scale of the main tank with the sharks in it is really awesome. All animals look healthy, they do their bit for conservation & the staff are lovely. We enjoyed a great afternoon.

Visited for the penguin exhibition, however found that there wasn't much penguin space to view. Everywhere was over crowded and people were just barging etc. I appreciate it not the Deeps responsibility, but some crowd control may have been beneficial, ie only letting x amount in per hour or something. I also appreciate it was school holidays, so maybe that affected the experience. But when a 4 year old says "but they ruined my picture" because an adult rudely barged there way in front, you have to kind of think is this the right activity for a family day out.
Got food in the cafe, prices were Okay, however the bread was harder than expected. Two drinks and a sandwich cost £7 roughly. Wasn't much that I saw for lactose free diets, but I may have missed it.
Found the talk at 1pm interesting, interactive and the woman knew how to keep the crowd engaged with her talk.
Overall spent around a hour and half there, that included food, toilet breaks & the talk.
I think I will visit again, using my free annual pass, however don't think I'd be paying to visit any time in the future. Also plan on going to some other attractions in Hull, so maybe could do a few things in one day!
Overall, memories made with my nephews so happy.

I visited the Deep over the weekend with my husband, two-year-old daughter and six-year-old son, who's autistic.
I emailed in advance to check on some details and was told we were welcome to use the accessible entrance and separate desk on arrival to avoid the main queue - this was so useful because queuing on arrival at a venue is normally where my son begins to struggle.
There is an indoor eating area with tables, where visitors can eat their own food. This is such a great facility and I wish more venues would offer this. It means you can avoid busy cafes and queues, and can just eat as and when it suits your family. Plus no worries about whether the cafe will offer one of the few meals that my son will eat.
In the afternoon my son became overwhelmed by the noise and crowds, so I asked a member of staff if there was somewhere quiet I could take him for a bit. He, along with a colleague, showed us to a quiet room where my son was able to relax away from the hustle and bustle outside. Once we were back on track we then had another look around, with the help of some ear defenders.
At every point of our visit the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful, and this is the first place we've visited as a family that felt properly inclusive for those with additional needs.
We'll definitely be visiting again soon!

4 adult members of our family visited on Saturday. The place was crowded with prams and toddlers and even babies and their parents. Though we tried our best not to get in the way of families and to move on as soon as any approached a display we were looking at, we were sworn at several times and barged out of the way. I am sure that the people who were doing this were a minority but it left me feeling as though I will never visit again, and cannot recommend it for adults without children.
Perhaps you could save other people from this experience by reserving the aquarium on certain days just for families with children, in the hopes that a couple of days per week would be quiet enough for adults to visit without being abused.
Altogether an unpleasant experience, which is a shame because the displays were excellent.

How easy is it to get to, once you arrive in Hull? Are there lots of confusing inner city junctions to navigate? Very nervous country bum-kin asking, that avoids city centres at all costs where possible. If I do visit, I would be driving from that there Lancashire.

Around one and a half to two hours should be plenty. There are demonstrations at some points informing you of the different sea life. This does not include the time we spent in the Cafe! P.s. There is an area set aside for you to eat your own food. Enjoy your trip.
