I feel lucky living in Carlisle and having these beautiful fells on my doorstep. Blencathra is definitely one of my favourites and provides a mixture of scrambling and walking routes to the top. Hall’s Fell Ridge is without a doubt my favourite route to the top, and as Wainwright rightly said "For active walkers and scramblers, this route is positively... More

What a walk/climb.....! It was a lot more that I bargained for. From the bottom looking up I wondered what I was doing then we went up via Hall's Fell (I have a head for heights but looking down made me feel a bit funny!) which had several difficult scrambles on route which continued to make me wonder what on... We decided on Wednesday 1/3/17 to climb the summit of Blencathra (from the Centre) not up Sharps edge! The higher we got the more the cloud came in until we reached the zigzag path, and then the snow and the hail started to fall! reaching the summmit in blizzard conditions, we met one other mad lady up on the summit... Absolutely stunning walk with beautiful views. The Lake District is one of the best places for a day of walking. The mountains here are amazing. well worth doing. Unfortunately when we did it, it was misty when we got to the top.

Few people are foolish enough to venture on to the Lakeland fells on the shortest day of the year but my youngest offspring tempted me out and proved to me once again that winter hiking can provide a magnificent experience. The start of the day did not augur well with torrential rain but I have never shrunk in the wet... More

What can be said about this mountain? It has been my easy route on many occasions for a quick blast up and down via Scales, and also a slot in poor weather. It is close to 'route 66' which means no walk in, is isolated from the more common routes and has just got so much to offer with views... More

We have been to the lakes many times but never climbed blencathra until today, and after doing so can see why it is so popular. There are many routes to the summit but we took one that required no precarious traverses although you do climb 700 metres in the first 3 KM so it isn't to be treated lightly. The... More

Blencathra was always going to be high on our 'must walk' list, taunting us on every trip up the A66 to the Lakes. We checked three separate weather forecasts - including the local Mountain forecast - and they promised a sunny, dry day with chance of cloud free summits at 95%, too good to resist. Our walk started at Mungrisdale,... More

There are many ways of ascending and descending this iconic fell close to the main road near Keswick. From the adventure (short lived ) of sharp north east edge which is a little more necky in winter conditions to one of the softer rising longer ridges facing south and the road. You can make plenty of cirque or horsehoe routes... More
