- CheshireDancingqueenNantwich, United Kingdom1,081 contributionsGenerally good at the Golden RuleAs we were staying across the road, the Golden Rule became our local for the week. A great traditional pub, always busy with a great atmosphere. They serve a good pint. The service was on the whole really good, we encountered one young gentleman who really couldn’t be bothered, however later in the week he was delightful, maybe just an ‘off’ day.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 October 2023
- Veronica CCalgary, Canada48 contributionsGot to go!We had a number of wonderful nights with Kieran, Iona and the rest of the bar staff (apologies Mr Tipperary and the other lady) at the Golden Rule. There was a perfect welcome, a welcoming banter and an appropriate amount of inclusion. The bar was warm, clean and comfortable. The location was tremendously convenient for us. We observed the staff navigate a couple of difficult situations. We had great chats and lots of laughs. What a top class act these young staff are. Margaret should be very proud. Thank you for a wonderful experience! Veronica and Christian!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 January 2024
- Jack MUnited Kingdom62 contributionsBest pub in the lakes! We've been all over the lakes and this our favourite pub by far. The pub is so nice and cosy inside, lot's of drink choices, board games you can play & of course very dog friendly. We can't wait to come back on our next trip to Ambleside.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 February 2024
- chrisaA2623NSManchester, United Kingdom36 contributionsA proper pubMyself and a group of my friends visit Ambleside several times a year & we always visit The Rule. We’ve been making the trip for over 30 years & the pub has hardly changed in all that time. The cask beer is always spot on and you can hear yourself talk. Great pub.Visited March 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 March 2024
- Helen EHarrogate, United Kingdom3 contributionsNever changes and that’s a good thing. We love making the Golden Rule a bit of a local when we stay in Ambleside, always a warm welcome from this proper - adults only at certain times - pub. It’s never changed in the 7 years we’ve been coming which is great. I was so happy with a FULL glass of Prosecco served as usually in a pub they manage to never fill the glass - not here. Also the fizz was very good unlike the chain that’s moved into Ambleside. Excellent beers I’m told. Love meeting all the dogs too. Rip to the little white dog that used to run the pub.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 June 2024
- Matt N22 contributionsFamily holiday drinksBest pub in Ambleside. Its great for walkers, families, kids in the games room. Fantastic selection of real ales. Pickled eggs a bonus. " beer garden" has a great atmosphere. But more of a yard than a garden. Seen a few bad reviews but if you're polite, respectful and your kids and dogs behave then you couldn't ask for a better pub.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 August 2024
- Jake CGreater Manchester, United Kingdom643 contributionsQuality boozerI love everything about this place. The decor inside, and the range of local draught ales/lagers/ciders available is seriously good. Rosie Pig Rhubarb cider, what a cracking find! I could drink it all night! I also think pubs with board games deserve a special mention. If you are in a large group and fancy a few pints after a long walk, I would not hesitate to recommend the Golden Rule.Visited September 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 22 September 2024

Plenty of places to sit inside and out, great beers and lovely atmosphere. Just a top top pub.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 September 2024

Visited again as we always do . Never ever felt that a review was needed as this Pub is top dollar. I music no food no tv. So wits up? Over 30 years me my mum n dad have visited this pub, thought the barman was more than a decent chap, however not tonight, perhaps he has had a bad day ? Not my fault, so don’t blame us. We are all trying to survive these Covid times. We all wore our masks sat where we were told, didn’t move. But we will not tolerate rudeness from an inebriated member of staff, especially one that holds himself to be a senior member of staff. Saving grace was a older bearded gent we have seen sing before in Ambleside, skirt did not get a name but is from Accrington lol, so we wil partake again, I never hold a grudge, just be more professional please for the sake of your business.

A massive thank you to all the staff at the Rule, you made our 5 days in Ambleside with work even better. The Golden Rules Covid measures are done so well that the drinking experience is not tainted in any way. All other pubs in Ambleside should take note of how IMHO Amblesides best pub is coping with the governent measures. Fantastic ale served byfantastic staff, who go out of their way to ensure your drinking experience is first class. You made some old sailors very happy indeed - thank you

This is so unlike many Lake District pubs which have been altered to attract tourists who want to eat. In contrast, this is a 'local pub' where tourists are welcome but do not dominate. Nothing has really changed in years. This pub is what a pub should be - warm and friendly with an excellent range of local beers. Although, we were tourists, we felt as welcome as everyone else - we'll be back in the spring!

After so many months closed it is great to be back in the best pub in Ambleside. A friendly welcome, wide choice of beers and wines. The pub is very well organised with signing in, shown to a table then orders taken. The staff are all working so hard with good humour. Thanks to all staff for looking after us so well.

Exactly what every pub should be. Excellent beer, open fire, people chatting, visitors made to feel welcome. No juke box, gaming machines, or piped music. But everything else a beer drinker (and wine drinker - my wife said the house wine was lovely) could want. Recommended

It is Christmas Day and 3:15pm and I have just followed some locals into the bar to be told there is a reason why the door is closed - I thought it was because it was cold. Not surprisingly I left quickly and went to the Royal Oak where I had a really warm welcome. When you are by yourself and just want to share Christmas cheer this is what you look for. Yes nobody wants to work on Christmas day but there are choices.
Needless to say I will never return to this pub and my golden rule is always be polite and share the the good will with all.

Lovely pub, poor service. There appeared to be only one member of staff working- we waiting almost 20 minutes for our drinks. When I politely asked where our drinks were there was a very rude reply and no apology. However, the beer was lovely and the outside area was very well maintained.

I'm sorry to hear that it took us a while to get your drinks to you. We did sometimes have a single member of staff working, but this was only during the first couple of hours after opening on the days when it was usually quiet. Otherwise we had between two and five staff on at any time. However we could occasionally be surprised by an unusual number of customers.
Regardless of the number of staff, if lots of people arrived or ordered within a short time it could mean a wait for drinks purely because table service typically takes around two-and-a-half times longer to complete an order than bar service. I am sorry that you found the member of staff rude, they were probably focussed on getting the drinks out to customers, and every time they have to stop to talk to someone the wait for drinks just got longer. This is no excuse for rudeness though.
I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed your drinks and our garden. Thankfully table service is no more and we have returned to the much more efficient bar service.

Just some quotes from our visit from the staff:
“You don’t want food do you? Because we don’t do it”
“We don’t do hot drinks with alcohol” (when asked for a baileys coffee)
“Before 6pm would be good because that’s when my shift finishes” - a rude and sarcastic comment when one of us was deciding which beer to have
“Take your wet trousers off before sitting down, don’t make the seats wet” (this was repeated to every single member of our group and the manager/owner made quite a fuss about it)
We were a large group of hikers but we checked before coming in that they had space for us. I don’t know who they expect to walk through their door if not hikers, but we were clearly an inconvenience and as we were leaving the manager/owner was overheard saying “I’m glad those wet people have gone”.
We must have spent nearly £200 on one round between us but clearly they didn’t want anymore custom from us so we went somewhere else for our next round!

I am sorry to hear that you had an unpleasant visit and I agree that the comments that were made to your group were unacceptable.
We did have a (now former) member of staff who had a peculiar sense of humour, and I suspect many of the comments were meant in jest, however they frequently didn't come across that way to other people.
Whilst we do regularly have a problem on rainy days with people sitting on the furniture in wet waterproofs and leaving a wet patch for other people to sit in, this clearly doesn't need to be said on an individual basis and can be said in a pleasant way. Unfortunately the landlady can get a bit of a bee in her bonnet about it.
Please accept my apologies for your treatment during your visit, as clearly on this occasion we fell far short of even the minimum standard of hospitality that should be expected.

Hello there,
Does your pub show sky sports? We are visiting for some cycling this weekend and the El classico is on. What is better than local ale and football?!
Thanks!
