Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

I stumbled across this site whilst taking a stroll at sunset. I did not see any signposts or direction markers in the area, but its easily reached from Borrans Park, just on the outskirts of Waterhead, 5 minutes from The Lake.
There are a few information plaques telling the story of The Roman settlement with images to help as you look at what are really the foundation stones of the buildings.
There is no charge to view this historical site, unsuitable for disabled visitors as the site is just a field, and there are no on site amenities.

Located at the top of the lake and next to Ambleside, had a very nice walk around the fort which has been preserved by the National Trust. Some of the foundations have been exposed with excellent notice boards so that you can understand how the fort looked and operated. Well worth a visit, some lovely level walks around as well.

This is a lovely place to wander around, a stones through from Ambleside. There are some plaques which explain what the foundational ruins are suspected to be, including some re-imagined pictures that help explain it.
You can walk easily in amongst the ruins or on the stones.
Not extraordinary in terms of there being a museum or better surviving ruins but I saw a child there having a whale of a time imagining what used to be there with her father which was very sweet, and I did personally find it pretty interesting.

The outline of the buildings are easy to see and the info boards around the site are very informative and show how the fort was constructed and worked.
Quite a way from Ambleside and no parking site nearby.

We heard a lot of interesting information about this place and after watching the barnstorming film 'Centurion' with Michael Fassbender we knew we had to visit!

We were not disappointed. The remains of the stonework show you exactly what kind of scale the legionary barracks were on and there are also helpful pictures situated around various points to show you what it might have looked like back in the days of the Empire.

It was brilliant to stand there and imagine all the Roman soldiers, locals and traders who might have walked over those same fields. It could only really be improved by perhaps rebuilding a section of it to show what it might have looked like in reality or maybe having a small museum on the site.

For the Roman history enthusiast, what are you waiting for?? Get here asap!

This Roman Fort is a truly magnificent find. It's the remains of a fort from the Roman province of Britannia. The ruins have been tentatively identified as those of either Galava or Clanoventa and are mentioned in the Antonine Itinerary.

I have been to Ambleside many times but never knew about this Fort. There are a few remains but having pictures and information around the site helped. I did find it very interesting and if you are interested in this sort of thing it is worth a visit.

Had a very nice walk around here for an hour or two. Just outside Ambleside town but not well signposted. Would make a good walk for those not wanting a mountain hike.
