About
Bridge House stands over Stock Beck in the middle of Ambleside as a quirky reminder of Ambleside’s past; it is a 17th-century survivor. Thousands of visitors come every year to see it and have their picture taken but few actually know much of its varied past. So if you’re in Ambleside, why not wander down to Stock Beck and have a look at Ambleside’s most curious relic? The closest parking is at Rydal Road car park (not NT, charges apply). Use LA22 9AY for Satnav. On foot, turn right out of the car park, Bridge House is situated on the right, just a very short walk along the pavement.

A quirky house built on what appears to be an arched bridge over the River Rothy. Not currently open, but from the outside, it’s possible to look in. Doesn’t seem to be much to see anyway. Looks like two small rooms, one downstairs and the other upstairs. An interesting and quirky landmark, but don’t go out of the way to see it.

One of the icons of Ambleside, just along the road. There is a nearby parking just after the bridge. The house itself was closed when we visited but still good to read information about it and see it for ourselves and be awed by how small it is yet how functional it was.

Probably the most instantly recognizable buildings in the Lakes. A real gem but beware of all the selfie takers on the pavement.

Lovely little house but do not make a special visit to see this as it is easily missed as on a very narrow road and path

Its a cute little place; but right next to the main road so becomes a bit of an obstacle as people stop to take a selfie with it. But it is unusual

My first of many visits to Ambleside was as a baby and still to this day if Ambleside is mentioned I always think of the bridge. It certainly is a landmark in the town and worth going to see.

We drove through Ambleside on a couple of occasions during our visit to the Lake District, so saw the Bridge House and its adjacent buildings from the car. We did try to park in the car park at the edge of Ambleside so we could explore it and the area around it, but gave up. The car park was pretty busy, even in October, and, although we found a space, there was a queue to pay at what must be one of the slowest payment machines in the world, and social distancing seemed to have been forgotten about. This was not good in the current situation.

Ambleside itself appeared a little too busy for comfort in the covid world, as indeed was Windermere, so we decided to drive on somewhere else.
