Set off from the Walna Scar parking area at about 6:50am and made it to the top for 8:10. The views were amazing and although the sunrise was not as spectacular as we had hoped due to lower cloud in the east, the views did not disappoint. The climb is all really manageable with no large features to speak of.... More

Good hard climb to the top via the old quarry workings. The clouds came in about half way up and visibility was down to 10 meters or less nearer the top. Unfortunately didn't see any of the spectacular views due to cloud but will be back in summer :)

Hard climb but the views from the top are well worth it. If you brace the single track road to Dixon ground you'll save yourself a long hard slog up a very steep hill, that's before you start the climb up the mountain! We were advised to walk up the back as it was a less severe climb, so dutifully... More

In a December say the Old Man of Coniston may not have been such a good choice of a walk in the lakes. On the way up we took the wrong route which turned a relatively easy scramble to the top into a 3 hour trudge along narrow paths and up steep climbs. When we eventually got near the top... More

Great adventure where we didn't climb all the way to the top, but went as far as the 5 year old's legs took us. The path is clear and well marked and it was great to see the old mining equipment and the old railway tracks and house ruins near the mineshafts. We had a toddler on a hiking backpack... More

We are not particularly fit but we managed to climb the Old Man and complete the circular walk in 4 hours. Part of it is kind of steep and covered with pebbles/slates, and some part can be very boggy/wet. You just need to make sure to wear proper walking boots. We had to keep our dog on the lead as... We were able to set off and do the walk from our b&b in little arrow. We were very luck with the weather. The views from the top were outstanding. We met and talked to lots of friendly people on the way up and back down again . Thoroughly enjoyed our day.

A long and steep climb to to the top, but fantastic views on a clear day. We walked up with two children who are very fit but was their first proper mountain walk. Took around 6 hours for a round trip, with stops for lunch and photos.

Certainly worth the climb for amazing views despite being very busy. Not a secluded place so be prepared. Take a less popular route to avoid the crowds.
