A trip to Brantwood started with a film about the life of John Ruskin, much more than I had seen portrayed about him in films. The house is interesting with good views over Coniston lake. I particularly liked the large painting on display for the season. Lunch in the cafe sited in the old stables was good and substantial.

The house looks pretty big on the journey in via boat, so its a bit of a disappointment when you realise how much of it is actually open - not much at all. A 15 minute video gives a bit of the history on Ruskin, but its pretty high level and uncritical, and you wont leave here with much more of... More

Great views over the lake. Fascinating house, lots to see, and the garden is good for a wander. Staff were friendly and helpful.

Beautiful house on Coniston Water , previously owned by victorian painter and poet John Ruskin. Furnished with his collections and belongings. Gardens and grounds also to visit. Beautiful setting, good day out. Can be reached by road but we arrived on the steam yacht Gondola. On site cafe serving food and drinks, ranging from soup and sandwiches to meals, tea,... More

Brantwood has a lovely setting, overlooking Lake Coniston, but you don't actually see more than a handful of rooms on the ground floor and one upstairs. The video presentation is interesting but makes sweeping claims for Ruskin that I found overstated. The gardens are good but it's surrounded by lots of freely accessible landscape.

The location of this house is fantastic, overlooking Coniston Water, with glorious gardens, and even a small jetty where the tourist boats drop off passengers. The house itself is small, with only a few rooms open to the public, but externally there are further buildings as well as far ranging gardens. I found it very interesting to learn about Ruskin,... We knew very little about John Ruskin, and visiting Brantwood gave us a really good opportunity to learn more about him, and a chance to see the world through his eyes. Brantwood, and the John Ruskin Museum in Coniston, are both worth a visit if you can manage it, rather than just one. We traveled courtesy of the Coniston Launch,... More

The way in which the house is set out enables you to find out, painlessly, much about this eminent Victorian. The gardens were lovely on a damp day and must be stunning when it's dry and bright.

This house is a joy! An Informative video lets you know how Ruskin arrived at Coniston and stayed until he died. The house offers details of the life of the residents and it is easy to see how settling into Brantwood could be easy for any of us! The gardens offer short but interesting walks and the cafe is s...
