About
In 1799 William Wordsworth arrived in Grasmere aged 29, largely unknown and writing innovative poetry that came as a shocking contrast to the fashionable verses of the time. Whilst living at Dove Cottage with his family, Wordsworth wrote many of his greatest poems and his sister Dorothy kept her fascinating Grasmere journal. Wordsworth Grasmere tells the story of this remarkable time in his life. Step into another century as you experience the sights, sounds and smells of Dove Cottage. Stroll through the Garden-Orchard, which has been restored to resemble the ‘domestic slip of mountain’ that the Wordsworths lovingly created. Play and explore in The Woodland, a wild and relaxed space. Discover Wordsworth’s radical and creative life in the Museum and take in views of Grasmere vale from the Viewing Station. From gallery tours to nature journaling, there are guided activities running every day of the week. Our Café serves wholesome, locally sourced food and drink.

The exhibition is so well presented and the immersive Audio Visual was very moving.
The staff were excellent and couldn't do enough to help us as my wife was in Mobility Scooter.
One major drawback is lack of easy access for disabled scooter and wheel chair users.
There is no purpose built ramp to the Museum. You have to enter the café and use a lift via two doors and another two doors to exit outside. Extremally difficult to negotiate. Very impractical.

Finding the car park / entrance wasn't easy, as you drive along the main road, but worth it.
There are various buildings to see and lots of information to obtain.
Make sure you also visit the Grasmere Church cemetery and Daffodil garden for more info.
You may find it easy to park in the first car park, as you drive into Grasmere, [off the main road,] and then you can do all of the above, without too much walking.

We’ve been to the Cottage several times over the past 20 years, lovely, interesting, and well worth a visit to get a taste of simple life in the 18th-19th Century. Very different from the grand houses of the aristocracy. The museum has just reopened after a £6million makeover lasting some years and we wanted to see it. Well worth the visit! Couldn’t have enjoyed the exhibits, the explanations, the recordings the time-line etc. more. Superb. The shop and the cafe are both stylishly built but very disappointingly and unimaginatively stocked. What about Dorothy Wordsworth biscuits and her other cold food, her recipe book and other instructions? On the cafe table there was a request for feedback. I wanted to make these suggestions and say nice tings. Nothing found on the website. I’ve tried that and also the contact form twice. No answer. So much for feedback! Wordsworth would have understood the irony. Nonetheless, go to the museum and to the cottage to learn about our literary and Lakeland heritage. Skip the cafe.

Have often visited Grasmere and heard lots about the area’s association with the poet but this was our first visit to Dove Cottage and the Wordsworth Museum.
We arrived early in torrential rain but were met by very friendly staff on the front desk and offered a tour of the museum. Our guide was knowledgable and enthusiastic pointing out key items in the collection.
Dove cottage was a worthwhile experience and Ruth our guide was patient and friendly enduring multiple questions about early 19th century toilet facilities!

We visited Dove Cottage and the fantastic Wordsworth Museum on September 7th we had trouble booking on line but were able to purchase tickets on the day. The staff there were beyond helpful, professional and friendly. particular mentions to Abbi who came upstairs to find us to see if we would be interested in the "behind the scenes" area, we were! To Melissa, who was in charge of showing a few of us around that area, she was incredibly passionate, interesting and interested in her subject, you couldn't help but be caught up in her enthusiasm. And lastly to Eleanor who showed us around Dove Cottage. Also to the two poets whom we were lucky to be able to listen to whilst sitting in the pretty garden. Fantastic museum and garden. So glad we did it, it has also caused me to have a new interest in poetry. Thank you to all staff

What a gem. Very welcoming and informative staff at ticket office. Enjoyed exploring the garden whilst awaiting our timed entry to the house. Marion gave us an excellent introduction to the life of the Wordsworths before we entered the cottage. Wonderful atmosphere. Really evocative of their life there.

It was wonderful to learn about William Wordsworth and his family, listen to his poems and visit the cottage he used to live in. Very educational and also emotional visit. My 8 years old son enjoyed it too and said it was very interesting and he learnt a lot about the history and literature.
