Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

A half-term visit to this stunningly located area was a dreadful disappointment. It had nothing to do with the poor weather but with the whole dog-eared experience everywhere. School holidays are clearly a peak time but places everywhere seemed shocked and unprepared for visitors. Car parking everywhere is very difficult and usually mightily expensive. The ticket dispensers are unbelievably slow, unreliable or out of order, the conditions and charges are inflexible. If you stay the night it's essential to get up and feed the meter at 9.0 a.m. or risk £100 fine! Hospitality and welcome? Not really. The few restaurants were not serving normally. It was difficult or impossible to find anywhere to eat indoors at a proper table because of staff shortages. Every tourist town/ village had the same shops with the same stock and the same huge prices, indistinguishable from each other. Huge charges to see Beatrix Potter-related trivia everywhere. Inadequate signage for walkers to get off the busy roads. Thank goodness this kind of blight has yet to reach the Borders!

I enjoyed the local atmosphere. I didn’t however like the huge hike up the Fairfield horse shoe. My personal tour guide said it is only a 5 hours walk and I’ll show you the easy way.
After 1 hour I was absolutely knackered I couldn’t hardly breathe. But I was a man and I carried on…oh my word 3hours in I’m half a way around stunning views to be blocked by a massive rain cloud which froze my face off. I thought I was going to die. I was left to collapse on the floor thinking this was it. My Apple Watch said 171 bpm. I had a sweet nugget energy bar and that was it I’m living today. My tour guide said it’s all down hill now . The sight of relief. Of I’m going to a bar or bed…
The my legs start really hurting. The rocks in the ground are inbeaded are battering my feet. Every step was another shooting pain up my leg. I tried rolling in the grass narrowly missed a sharp green spotted rock! 6.30 hours later I was home.
The views are lovely. Needs a cable car system please 🙏

Visited The Lake District for a week at the beginning of May21. The Uk was just coming out of lockdown so everything was still very quiet. We thoroughly enjoyed everything we did & saw (please see some of my more specific reviews if you want more info). Our favourite place though was Wast Water which even on a cloudy & drizzly day was stunning.
There is so much to see & do that we are already talking about another holiday in 2022.

1sr time visit & a place we have wanted to visit for a long time.
Our 1st day we visited Kendal & what a lovely clean place. A nice place to stroll around.
The next day we visited Ambleside. We had a little walk around the village & then did a boat trip to another part of the lake. This was about a 30min trip & really enjoyable.
My only downside is you can’t really walk around the lake.
We enjoyed our time here & would like to go back & visit the other lakes

I used to live in the Lakes - but that was 48 years ago!! So, of course, much has changed - but for me to the better. Road communication is much better and the range of shopping in Kendal much improved. Yes it rains - a lot!!! but that keeps the scenery beautifully green.

I had the same problem in the Lake District National Park, having been "hit" by the numberplate recognition cameras they use, in my case at Brockhole Visitor Centre near Ambleside. We did not know there was a parking fee (in an area widely advertised as "free". There were no instantly apparent signs and definitely no pay points anywhere in the visitor centre that we could see in the 5 hours we were there and definitely none in the entrance. There is one at the exit apparently, but again I didn't see it. not knowing there was a parking charge it isn't something you would be looking for on the way out is it? I got a bill through the post later, with a £20 "admin" fee added and it is very clear that an awful lot of people are being caught out by this grossly unfair system judging by the number of complaints I found on the internet.
Yes there is a fee - they claim it's free but you have to pay for the car park and the attractions such as the rope climb and donkey rides etc.
Recommended length of visit - don't bother, it's nice but there is plenty of free scenery to look at in the Lake District.

we would like to advise anyone planning a touring /walking holiday by car to save up plenty of money for the car parking fees, it is really expensive and can really cost lots. each time you wanted to stop anywhere it was like being mugged.

Wherever we had stayed or visited within the Lake District National Park we have always enjoyed ourselves and enjoyed some great walks whatever the weather. There is always something to do or somewhere to go.

Spent 4 days driving around, never staying too long in one place. Loved it. One thing is National Trust car parks, they charge £4.50 or £5 for up to 2h staying... And it takes only coins... I mean only today I've been driving for around 5 hours and looking for beautiful places to see and came up to stop in like 6-8 NT car parks, just for 5-10 minutes to look ariund and take few photos. So to pay for all of them I should have around £40 in coins... :-D isn't that crazy?

We are looking at coming from Edinburgh down to the Lake District maybe June/July this year. We will have with us our 2 year old dog and our baby who will be around 3 months old by then. We have never been before so we are just looking for somewhere to stay that has nice walks that aren’t to much for our bulldog and for me or dad carrying baby and also somewhere close to local pubs etc for lunches. Any help would be appreciated :)

Drove up from Suffolk and stayed overnight but difficult to find an empty hotel during the summer without a reservation.
Toured Windermere including the steamer and boat rides.
If you drive there is beautiful scenery on a sunny day with lots of walks.
