    Different to expected
Having visited other Lakeland Art places I was expecting big things after a long closure. I was disappointed to see a lot of the “original” artwork had gone. The current exhibition while interesting took over the whole building and was very “video installation heavy”. The current exhibition is also on till December so unless looking at shop or having a coffee in the cafe not much point in revisiting.
Hi Daisy, Thank you for visiting us at Abbot Hall and for giving us your feedback. We are sorry that you felt disappointed by the current exhibition by Julie Brook. What is it That Will Last? by Brook explores ideas around landscape, ecology and identity and runs across both floors. Alongside the J.M.W Turner, the ground floor of the gallery also displays works by Dame Barbara Hepworth, Frank Auerbach, Kurt Schwitters, The Great Portrait depicting Lady Anne Clifford’s life and newly acquired pieces by Charmaine Watkiss and other pieces from the Abbot Hall collection. We hope you will return to the gallery in the new year for the next exhibition which will showcase more of our art collection. Best wishes Lauren Lakeland Arts

    Inspiring Exhibition, Beautiful Gallery Space.
This is a small but beautiful gallery. We saw the Julie Brook exhibition. If you visit be prepared to watch the videos, each is about 15/20 mins long and there are at least five of them. Sometimes it feels like nothing is happening but I found it a rather meditative experience and the more I saw about how Julie Brook works the more amazing a woman and artist she seemed. I loved her drawings, paintings and photographs too, evocative. We virtually had the gallery to ourselves, a calming still place to wander in. There are a small number of other paintings/sculptures on show which gave me time to really look at them properly. We took two hours then needed a break - picnic lunch in the park outside and coffee from the gallery shop - then back in for another hour to finish viewing the exhibition. BBC4 have a documentary 'Forest Field and Sky: Art out of nature' this is on show in the gallery but you can watch it on i-player too. I think I enjoyed the exhibition more having watched that programme first as it gave me a better understanding of landscape artists like Julie Brook. After the exhibition the title "What is it that will last" is resonating with me. £9 for three enjoyable hours seems ok, especially as I can use the ticket again to visit Abbot Hall anytime in the next year
Thank you for visiting us Ann and for taking the time to write your review, that information is very useful to know! We are delighted you had a wonderful visit and hope to see you again soon. All the best, Lakeland Arts

Lovely visit to Abbott Hall after its closure for renovations
It was good to be able to revisit this art gallery after its closure for renovation. The current exhibition is thought-provoking with regard to the permanence or otherwise of manmade structures in the landscape. It was helpful to see the creative process of the artist through video and sketchbooks, bringing extra meaning to the artworks and video installations, and our teenage grand-daughter studying art was especially appreciative of this. The cafe was lovely with space to sit outside at the back of the gallery. Looking forward to future exhibitions.
Thank you for visiting us at Abbot Hall. We are so glad that you had a lovely time exploring the current exhibition with your granddaughter and that you enjoyed our cafe space. We hope that you will come back and visit us again with your ticket, which is valid for 12 months. All the best, Lakeland Arts

Inspiring exhibition in a lovely setting!
Lovely environment with welcoming staff. Thoroughly enjoyed Julie Brook's immersive exhibition, including her sketchbooks and large-scale drawings. I thought the incorporation of artworks from the Abbot Hall collection, such as a Turner watercolour, Kurt Schwitters collage, Frank Auerbach drawing and Barbara Hepworth sculpture, all specially selected by Julie because they were inspirational to her, added to the experience. Lovely coffee and shop too!

The biggest waste of £9 I’ve ever spent plus car park costs. This wasn’t art, it was pretentious rubbish. The only saving grace was a visit to the church next door

Too much space given to one artist .Overall an extremely disappointing exhibition to mark the reopening of a much loved gallery - and going on for so long ! Hoping for more accessible and interesting art in 2024 .
