Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

10/10 as always with John. The Ben Nevis trip may not of had the weather for any ridges but that didn't stop us from doing some amazing climbs on the Douglas Boulder. John provided some delicious meals and an all round great weekend in the CIC hut

Great trip with John and Ben into the CIC hut and the magnificent north face of Beinn Nevis. Even in mixed weather plenty of opportunities for adventure and learning

Had an amazing couple days Climbing with John who was unbelievably helpful and knowledgeable. had loads of fun, felt very safe and was awesome to get out on the crag for a full day and half a day. covered even more than I thought which will prepare me for my sport climbing trip to the French Alps in May which I was unsure about before Climbing with John as I lacked knowledge in certain areas. would 100% recommend to anyone of any ability!

Booked a bespoke winter skills course to be run over 2 days. John provided excellent instruction - clear and tailored to my needs. Light theory in the 'classroom' over coffee with demonstrations/exercises to begin each day. Then getting out there for the rest of the day where we progressed through skills with show and tell and practice. I got clear, calm, instruction and encouragement with clear feedback and correction where needed - exactly what I wanted. The sessions were tailored to my needs and all my (many) questions answered. For me some bits were quite new and challenging given my limited winter experience but I felt safe and secure at all times. Would highly recommend Open Ascents if you get the chance - in fact I booked another 2 days for later in the year!

A great day climbing with John with a top up on lead climbing skills. The weather forcast for the day was shocking but john and I headed out and managed a route on Wallowbarrow Crag. After the route it was obvious there wouldn't be any more climbing due to the weather, but instead of calling it a day we went to the indoor wall where John went through techniques and escaping the system!

Great day, great climbing abd great company 100% recommend!!!

I had a great day climbing with John in Langdale. I hadn't climbed outdoors since May 2022 so I was a little nervous beforehand. However, John is an excellent guide and judged the routes to perfection. As my confidence grew so did the climbing grades. It was so good to be out on the crags again and I thoroughly recommend John as a guide - great instructor, obviously extremely competent and just the right balance of challenge v fun!

Had a great day of bespoke climbing out at Shepherd’s Crag with John. This was my first time climbing in the UK, as well as my first time doing multi-pitch, and I had a very enjoyable day of learning a lot about the UK climbing culture and multi-pitch climbing while also having the meat of the day be exactly what I asked for: just pure climbing! As a non-local who was looking to get some outdoor climbing in while on vacation, I had told John that my primary goal for the day was simply to climb and to experience as many of the local highlights or classics as we could fit in. John did a terrific job of asking questions leading up to the day to plan a solid itinerary, and the climbs he selected were perfect for what I was looking for — fun, challenging, and doable enough that we could get a whole lot of mileage in. Great weather*, great company, great views, great climbing… what more can you ask for?!

I recently attended a 4 day trip to Ben Nevis with John and Open Ascents. We spent 3 nights in the CIC hut at the base of the north face of Ben Nevis, and tackled some of the ridges leading up to the summit.

There were four clients in total, with John and another incredibly experienced guide Ben guiding us up the technical scrambles. The entire weekend was superbly well organised, with a huge amount of attention to detail. Communication before the trip was excellent, and completely put me at ease ahead of what was an intimidating weekend of scrambling.

Throughout the weekend, our guides John and Ben were communicative, and clearly discussed with the group their plans and how they had been made based on objectives of the group, weather conditions and experience levels. Everything was tailored to the clients' abilities and aspirations, but with safety and more importantly enjoyment at the forefront of their minds.

I cannot recommend Open Ascents enough - their passion for the outdoors and deep understanding they develop of their clients and their goals and weaknesses ensures that every element of the guiding is perfectly suited to the individual/group. Their attention to detail, personable nature and willingness to share enthusiasm and skills makes them my provider of choice for teaching and guiding in the outdoors.

Just came back from a 3 day trip climbing some of the ridges on the North Face of Ben Nevis. The trip was organised by John, which included himself, Ben (another guide) and 4 strangers. We all stayed at the CIC hut just under the ridges.

On the Friday evening we walked up to the hut and all got to know each other under the watchful eye of both John and Ben, who could then determined our climbing partners over the next few days based on who spoke to the most on the walk in. Once in the hut John was very knowledgeable and showed us on a picture, of the ridges, everything that we would be doing during the next day.

The Next day our group had an incredible day climbing Tower Ridge and descending via Ledge Route. The weather was pretty grim with it raining and blowing a gale however the clouds cleared in time for us to summit the mountain. Again once back at the hut john went through everything we'd be doing the next day and had plans A,B,C and D in case the weather was too bad.

On the Sunday the weather was very grim however we stuck to plan A and climbed Castle Ridge which once again was an incredible ridge and in the weather it proved more challenging than Tower Ridge. As Castle Ridge didn't take long once back at the hut and after drying off, John went through a really handy Q&A session showing us kit, knots, rope work and anything else we had seen them do during the day and wanted to learn about it in the safety and warmth of the hut.

The whole trip was an absolutely INCREDIBLE experience and i couldn't recommend John enough. He is a great guy, full of knowledge and is willing to share this knowledge with everyone. You will 110% have an amazing climbing experience and you will become a returning client in no time.

After 5 days with John last summer I’d not got out as much as I’d hoped so this was a bespoke 2 days out to consolidate previous learning and explore problem solving as well as getting out on some great climbs! So much learning and so much fun! Thoroughly recommend
