- KrisCarl634Barham, United Kingdom5 contributionsNot too be missedWhat an absolute wonderful place to visit. We visited the house and the welcome was warm and genuine. Hunting the owls was good fun and we learnt so much of the history from the owner. We did the lakeside walk, which was lovely. Would highly recommend the house and gardens for all ages.Thank you for this lovely review - a perfect one to end our season with!Written 23 November 2023This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 November 2023
- Anne TLiverpool, United Kingdom228 contributionsPeaceful and lovelyVisited here on a cold, wet day. I think I was the only visitor! Went with my dog and we walked around the gardens, down to the church and along the lakeside and back. We sat in the bee garden and watched the birds on the feeders, which was beautiful and peaceful. Some of the rhododendrons wee putting on their spectacular spring colour. The church was lovely and tranquil, and gave us some shelter from the biting cold wind! Was there for about an hour and a half.Thank you this very kind reviewWritten 15 May 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 2 May 2024
- Julian G2 contributionsNot to be missed!Have been coming to the Lakes regularly all my life but for some inexplicable reason have never visited Mirehouse. What an omission! The late Spring colours were amazing with Rhododendrons and Azalias at their best. The gardens provided peace and serenity even at the height of the Spring Bank Holiday with imaginative play opportunities for the kids. The walk to pretty St Bego’s church was rewarding and the views from the lake shore were spectacular and panoramic. We bumped into the lady of the house, hard at work in the Bee Garden, and she was utterly charming and friendly. The refreshments available at the Old Sawmill Tea Room were a lovely conclusion to our visit. The only disappointment was that we did not coincide with the house being open so a return visit will follow as soon as possible.Thank you for your lovely review and we would be delighted to welcome you into the house when you can come back again.Written 23 June 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 28 May 2024

My wife, dog and I visited at the end of September on a damp day. Expectations were low!
Parking is easy enough to find in the Dodd Wood car park which contains the Old Sawmill Tea Room. A camera captures your car reg plate on the way in and you pay on exit. Car park contains clean and well maintained toilets.
We bought our tickets at the Tea Room, still full price despite the house being out of bounds. Grounds it is then...which you access over the road from the car park.
As soon as you enter the grounds, to the left you must show your tickets at a window. Despite it being open, and us pressing the bell multiple times, no-one showed up. So off we trotted around the grounds.
It kept dry for us, although there were some boggy bits as we made our way to the lake, which kept out of reach for a long time, teasing us through the trees. Eventually the path opens up to the lakeside, but not for long, before you meander back through the fields and up to the road.
There are lots of little side shoots to the main path: squirrel garden, bee garden, adventure area, but all was quiet and seemed to be closing down towards winter. Not much in the way of colour, just green and damp.
It was a pleasant enough walk and probably one which would be much better in May/June for the gardens to be in full flower, but I felt a little short changed.

Beautiful location at the foot of Dodd wood, parking is provided by forestry commission ampr cost 5.25 for about three hours. Parking spaces limited so go early peak season if you want a space.
You buy ticket for house or gardens at old sawmill cafe.
Lots of free trails in woods in Dodd wood. Also free toilets on site.
Or pay £20 for family of five to walk the grounds of mire house and there are lots of little things for families of different ages to do with a lovely circular walk to a church and the lake. Not too far. We though it was good value for money.
You pay more to see the house which is only open on certain days and afternoons from 1:30.
We stopped at cafe next to car park- which does not have many seats outside so we were lucky nb. we had two Dogs with us, food was reasonable price and tasty. Staff were friendly but obviously very busy with tickets and food made for a bit of a queue. Would recommend- but have some patience on busy days.

We came here on a whim when some nice ladies recommend it in a cafe. We are a family of 2 adults and 3 children (11, 8 and 3) and all had a fantastic time. Children under 4 were free and we paid approx £13.50 + £4.50 for parking... Definitely worth it. The playground and gardens were lovely and almost deserted despite it being half term. The children loved the adventure playground (especially the zip wire) which was much better and different to your average "adventure playground". There was also a wooden forte and fun, sizable, steeple chase. Beautiful walk along tree lined paths and streams to play in with amazing views down to and along the water. The map provided says the walk takes 1.5 hours. We were VERY slow and took our time enjoying everything with kids and it took us just over 2.5 hours. The gardens close at 4.30, luckily you don't get locked in as we didn't leave until 6! Would highly recommend X

Cannot give the full.5.stars because the house was Covid closed.
The gardens were well worth a visit with a combination of formal gardens, wilder Woodlands and a lovely lake side walk.
The formal.areas are laid out with the theme of 'bees' and my favourite bits were the potting shed, heather maze and water feature. The woodland areas have new planting and ancient trees as well as many rhododendrons ( May is a good time for these). My favourite spot was a secluded seating area next to a waterfall.
The walk down to the lake was tranquil and easy to follow. The best bit was the beach of bleached timbers on the lake shore.
We.took 2.hours to wander.round and the whole area Is dog friendly.
And then there was a lovely coffee and cake at the Sawmill cafe by the car park (which is on the other side of the road to the gardens).

We had walked the Dodds woods trails quite a few times but had never visited the gardens at Mirehouse. Wow! They are outstanding. I was so surprised at the beauty, variety and vision. Will be my new favourite for days when an easy peaceful stroll is all I fancy amongst stunning gardens and trees. Even a tiny church and lakeside paths are there. . The staff in the cafe were very friendly and the lady at the entrance too. A useful map is given for a good entrance fee of £5.50 just for the garden. Will visit the house next time. Thank you.

We are a family of four (kids age 14 and 12) and we all enjoyed Mirehouse gardens and the walk by the lake. We spent about 3 hours there. We had our picnic by the lake. It was fairly quiet when we were there and peaceful. The children enjoyed the obstacle course and skimming stones by the lake. Well worth a visit and value for money.

Really enjoyed the tranquility of the grounds. The bee garden was beautiful. We walked down to the Lakes and we were enchanted by the views. We felt that the grounds were of great benefit to wildlife. The house was very interesting and the guides informative and friendly. We particularly enjoyed the infor.ation about the secret drawers in the bureau which were shown to us by a family member. There was plenty to see and the music being played on the Steinway piano enhanced the visit. The Iiterary connections are highlighted
Staff in the tearoom in the car park were friendly and helpful. A great visit. Thank you.

My daughter and myself thoroughly enjoyed the lovely walk from the road and the rhododendrons were so beautiful and colours gorgeous. We walked down were the arrows pointed to and ended up by the shore on the lake, it was so quiet and not many people about, some children thoroughly enjoying the different obstacles that had been put there for them to enjoy. We then walked down to the house, which unfortunately was closed but still a lovely walk and really enjoyed by us both.

We loved these gardens. A lot of different things to look at with kid's activities hidden in the trees. And a walk down to a lovely little church and the lake - Bassenthwaite. I loved the 'working from home' ticket checker in the lodge house at the gate. Good coffee from the cafe in the car park. And you don't have to pay on arrival when parking but on leaving so no need to worry about getting back to your car on time. And it takes cards and Apple pay. Never expected that from a Forestry Commission car park!
The one thing that stopped a five star review was the cows, calves and heifers in the filed on the way back from the lake on the long walk. I know a lot of people that would not have wanted to walk through this, especially if they had a dog. A warning sign at a suitable turnaround point would be a good idea.

I would give this a higher rating if I could. We visited with our dog and it was brilliant and great value. The cafe food is delicious and reasonably priced, the toilets are spotless and free. Once you've shown your ticket you can wonder along the many paths, the Bee garden is lovely and look out for hidden seating areas along the stream. We will definitely be going back.

Thank you for getting in touch. Yes most of the gardens (Bee Garden and round the house) and part of the lakeside walk are accessible with an outdoor wheelchair (gravel paths). Please ask for an access leaflet when you buy tickets at The Old Sawmill Tearoom. You are welcome to park in front of the house even if you are only visiting the gardens. Enjoy your visit
