May sound boring but it isn't
May sound boring but it isn't. Although small you are provided with a quiz to complete while walking through that was fun to do (shield your answers as like any quiz others try and sneak peak your answers!) and makes you more attentive to the information. You even get a prize if you get all answers and draw a good picture with free pencil they give you. Cafe was nice and there is seating outside to enjoy your refrehments.

    amazing rare pencil there
the worlds rarest pencil there is fascinating. who knew it was from ikea? i tried to debunk it but couldn’t as ikea don’t give them out anymore. the person who donated it is a bit of an idiot but it’s not their fault. it’s still a good pencil. i can’t comment on the rest of the museum because i had my eyes closed

Very interesting about graphite mines and pencils
Derwent Pencil Museum is located in Keswick, a town in Lake District, in the middle of England. It is a museum, where you can learn about graphite mines located in this region. In fact, you can read about their history and how pencils are manufacture. Very interesting. Also, you can see some collections of pencils and how maps are hidden in pencils in the 2nd World War. Very curious.

    A Gem in the Lakes
What a great way to spend a couple of hours. If you’ve not visited this little gem on your visit to the Lakes you’ve missed a treat. Who would believe pencils could be so interesting. From the first Graphite find to the modern day, including marvellous stories through the war. This museum is a must.

    Excellent visit.
Had a brilliant time at the pencil museum with my husband. We thoroughly enjoyed learning about the history of the pencil and seeing the fascinating display of pencil sharpeners. Highly recommend the quiz and a wander around the beautiful shop.

Quaint little museum with activity for all ages
The museum is small, but quaint. You get a free pencil (your ‘ticket’) and a quiz to complete as you walk around the museum. The quiz was great as it made us pay more attention to what we were reading, and helped the information sink in. Loved the spy pencil and the giant pencil. We only stayed an hour, but it was enjoyable Note - there is no longer free parking for the museum, however it is reasonably priced. If you only plan to spend an hour, make sure you have coins as there is a £3 minimum (3 hours) for card payments.

Small but mighty, just like Derwent pencils!
This museum may be small but it really packs a punch! I loved entering it through a graphite mine tunnel although because it was a busy day there was then a massive jam of people reading all the information boards in the next section. They were fascinating though so it was understandable - I learnt loads and was surprised to realise how much Derwent pencils have featured in my life already. The videos throughout, about the secret map pencils the factory made in WWII and pencil production today, were all fantastic and well worth watching. The world record pencil was surprisingly underwhelming, maybe due to its cramped position in the centre of the museum which meant you couldn’t take it in properly. I loved all the extra displays, e.g. the pencil sharpener collection, the pencil portrait of the late Queen and the special pencil made for her Diamond Jubilee. The shop at the end is also fantastic and I wanted to buy everything (even though I'm no artist)!

Must visit if the area, pencil museum, enough said.
Fantastic place if you and/or your child loves stationary! Plenty of parking available, although I couldn't get the ticket machine to work I didn't get a charge (probably didn't stay long enough for the traffic warden to visit). Waiting in the queue for about a couple of minutes before the staff took our payment and gave some activity sheets for the kids, a great idea! We went through the tunnel into the main area where there were many historic pencils in glass cabinets. The kids loved the puzzle / mission they were given as part of the activity sheet more than the museum if we're honest, but was great for all ages overall. Don't think we will be making a return visit though (one of those visit once attractions, but a must see if in the area - the large pencil cannot be missed).

    Well worth a visit
Excellent exhibition . Liked the fact that everyone was offered the quiz not just the children. We got so much out of it as a retired couple . And it was dog friendly and it had an excellent cafe selling fresh food. Loved being able to try out the different pencils and crayons and the discount offers in the shop. So much better than when we took our children thirty years ago.

Lovely way to spend a couple of hours
In Keswick for the morning while on coach holiday in the Lake District. Popped into the pencil museum not knowing what to expect and found the whole place enchanting from doing the quiz while walking around to friendly and helpful staff, great little shop then finishing with a great mug of coffee. Thank you.

Much more interesting than you would think, it was a really enjoyable visit. Staff were incredibly friendly, a well stocked gift shop, small but nice cafe with excellent coffee, and a fun quiz to get you round that isn't just aimed at children. Great visit! Keep up the good work.

Informative and interesting museum. You need about 1 hour here. We were given a sheet of questions to fill in as we went around the museum. This was helpful in helping us to remember some of the interesting stories about graphite and the making of pencils. Great for a rainy day. The shop was well stocked.

Great little museum! Enjoyed doing the quiz,as you find out loads, but being snarled up with other people was a bit annoying! But at least we won the prize. Particularly liked the wartime story of the map inside the pencil! Staff were very friendly.

A great surprise. Really enjoyed our visit here. Informative, fun with friendly and helpful staff. It's a nice sized museum and the displays are laid out well. There's a quiz which is worth doing too.

This ain’t sketchy! Excellent museum

Well worth a visit, the exhibits are well planned and easily laid out for all to enjoy. The quiz was really good to motivate the mind.

The history is incredible and the royal exhibits well worth viewing.

Went on a rainy day and felt that too many people had been let in to a small area . Had a quiz to do but finding the information snarled up movement through museum. Toilets were in an Outside building didn’t find them very clean , were filthy with toilet paper all over actually . Didn’t find it an easy museum to move a wheelchair round possibly due to overcrowding . Had to pick up the dog to stop him getting trampled on . Cafe felt like an add on far too small to accomadate the number of people . Really disappointed

Thank you for your recent review on the Derwent Pencil Museum. We are sorry to hear of your disappointment during your visit. The Museum can get quite busy especially during school holidays and more so when it is raining. Due to the size of our facility we constantly monitor how many visitors are let into the building and stop and stagger admissions during busier times. The toilets are located outside and they are monitored and cleaned by staff during the day. If we are informed of any issues with the toilets, staff are quick to respond and rectify any problems. The coffee shop has limited space inside the building but we do offer seating outside. We do pride ourselves on our customer service and we would have happily discussed these concerns during your visit. Thank you for taking the time to leave the review and I hope we can welcome you back again in the future.

As the Title suggests I felt this was quite expensive for the 20 minutes it takes to look around. If it had been £10 for a family ticket that would seem about right. I personally would save your money, sorry.

We had wanted to visit for a while and it was particularly busy in the Easter holidays. The quiz is a great way to find out all the information and the reward is some pencils to take home we came away with a handful! There is colouring for children and space to do this and lots of interesting displays. Good offers in the shop well worth a visit.

A lovely museum which covers the history of pencil manufacture and the process of current production at the factory through displays and videos. A wonderful display of the history of sets of pencils too. It is great to enjoy the discounts in the shop too which can be accessed with the cafe without going round the museum.

If I just wandered around, probably 2 stars, but they have a trick up their sleeve. You get a questionnaire to do as you go around, and this makes you take every bit of information in as you look for the answers to win a prize on completion and because of this, we found it very interesting and enjoyable. The only downside was the price of entry, but alas nothing's cheap these days.
