I have just completed a 3 day landscape photography course with Martin in West Cumbria around Wasdale and Eskdale.
It was a great course and he has renewed my passion for photography.
He is very patient and knowledgeable and thoroughly explained each aspect of my camera, the attachments and composition. What seemed hard at the start became almost second nature by the end of the course.
I can highly recommend him and thank him immensely.

I booked a two day landscape photography course while in the Lake District of England with Martin Lawrence. I have taken photography courses at other places in the past. I typically learn a tip here or there but that is about all. I learned more about photography in two days with Martin than I have learned cumulatively in the past 3 years. He is a highly skilled and gifted photographer but more important is that he is such a good teacher. His style of teaching begins with basic information but quickly progresses to your level, and then he digs in to provide meaningful information that is helpful to you at your personal skill level. Whether you are a beginner or more advanced, Martin tailors his instruction to be most beneficial to the student.
We went to locations for iconic landscape shots including Castlerigg, Derwentwater, Ashness Bridge and other, less touristy, spots with perfect vistas for great shots. We worked together to get the best composition and the clearest, sharpest images. Then we edited the photos at his lodge on photoshop. Despite his in-depth knowledge of the functional aspects of digital cameras and photoshop, he is able to explain the processing features of the camera and the steps for editing in photoshop in clear and understandable ways so that when you leave you can actually put the information you learned to use. That is a rare trait among photography instructors. He is also a very nice fellow with an obvious passion for photography.
Anyone interested in spending a fun day or two learning about landscape photography on location where great photographic opportunities abound, should arrange for a course with Martin. The experience was more than worth the price. It was also a very fun way to enjoy and capture the Lake District's beautiful scenery. Obviously, I highly recommend this course.

Thanks for getting the ball rolling for us with your review. Glad you enjoyed your two days and if ever you are over here again from the USA it would be great to catch up and maybe do some more photography.

I have just completed a thoroughly enjoyable 2 day photography workshop with Martin Lawerence. Martins Knowledge of Landscape photography is exceptional. He teaches with great enthusiasm and passion. I learnt so much from how to set my camera up. He talked about all the camera functions from Manual control, focus, ISO and White Balance, how to compose a perfect landscape image in the most amazing locations. Martin is an extremely nice guy who I found easy to get on with. If your looking for a professional, friendly workshop look no further than Martin Lawerence. He also has an awesome knowledge of The Lake District.

Cheers Neil for this lovely review. It was a pleasure spending two great days together in the lakeland fells. I enjoyed your company and I'm glad you learnt a lot. Hope to see you in autumn when the lakeland colours are at their best.

Thank you Martin! I found Martin’s one to one course absolutely brilliant, his enthusiasm for both photography and the Lake District really inspired me a lot. Martin gave me the knowledge to grow as a photographer and as an artist. I started to get a feel for what makes a good landscape photograph, very quickly, through his advice on composition. I cant wait to get out again to practice the techniques he taught me. The locations we visited, throughout the course, were amazing.
The most interesting part of the course, for me, was learning how to use ND filters, setting exposure and all using manual mode only all on location. It’s this kind of hands on experience and learning that made the course so valuable for me. As an artist I’m not great with numbers or technical information but I found everything was explained very clearly throughout the course of the day, the information quickly started to make sense on location.
Martin was a great teacher, very patient and passionate about Landscape photography. Martin’s love for the Lake District took us to some beautiful places to take a set of photographs I’m very proud, thank you very much!

An excellent day. Learnt more in the first hour about landscape photography than in all my previous years. Hyperfocal distance was a revelation and has changed how I do landscape photography. Like all things, you get out of something what you put into it. Martin was great at explaining things and no question was too stupid. If you wish to up your ability to take landscape photos - have a day with Martin. Its really great on a 1-to-1 as he can focus (excuse the pun) on your needs and wishes, taking account of your previous knowledge.

I was looking for individual tuition as I had been on several group workshops and they did not provide the degree of tuition I felt I needed. I found Martin’s website and was impressed by the reviews.
As a woman on my own I was slightly anxious about meeting Martin in the dark at Castlerigg in Keswick. I need not have been. Martin soon put me at ease and I felt entirely comfortable in his company.
Martin gave clear explanations of the steps that we would put into practice throughout the day. He checked that I understood by asking questions at appropriate intervals during the initial tuition and again when we were out taking photographs.
After I returned home I looked at the photographs which I took during the workshop. I am delighted with their quality and really feel that I have learnt the skills to achieve the same results when I am out on my own.
I am looking forward to undertaking further workshops with Martin in the future.

Hi Angela
Thanks for your very kind words and I'm glad that you enjoyed your workshop. I couldn't believe how lucky we were with the weather!
It's always great to see someone go away with some dramatic images which the weather provided nicely for us. Look forward to meeting you next year on another workshop.
Best regards
Martin

I booked a 1-2-1 session with Martin.
The day started at 6.00am out at Castlerigg so you will need to stay overnight nearby (I stayed at Vale in the Lodge - 8 mins by car) unless you live close by.
It was late October - so dark - when we met up - but meeting was easy and Martin is extremely amiable.
First was a refresher of the basics (relationship of ISO, Aperture and Shutter Speed) which was really useful reinforcement of many things. I learned some critical new things as well.
Around 7.30 we started the practical at the magical Castlerigg Stone Circle against the fell backdrops of Skiddaw and Blencathra.
Martin focuses on how to use your gear and a lot of time and guidance is provided on composition (critical to landscapes). It is good if you have your own gear (camera, tripod and wide angle lens) - filters (soft grad) are desirable but Martin has some to borrow if his adaptors are compatible with your lens (Martin checks what gear you have before the course).
We then moved on to Tewet Tarn and then Derwent Water - I was amazed (at the latter venue) as to how you can still get great photos with so many people around.
I can highly recommend and will probably do another session once I have worked on the current learnings.

I wanted to learn how to properly use my camera and also wanted to create an art project using photography. Martin was brilliant. As a female on my own I felt completely at ease with him, and his ability to teach the technical aspects was fantastic. The locations that we went to were simply brilliant, and I was able to put what I had learned into practice later in my holiday. I felt this was an excellent course and was also brilliant value. Thank you Martin!

Me and my mum booked a landscape photography class with Martin on the 4th of October. Unfortunately the weather on that day was not ideal but Martin continued to give us the best option for the photography class, so we did some more photography on the 5th of October instead, which was way more sunny. Martin is a very friendly tutor and explains very well, he made us understand the utmost fundamentals of landscape photography and interesting techniques using ND filters and the big stopper. I can definitely apply this to my photography skills to further enhance my landscape photography. He also explained the use of photoshops and post processing after taking pictures very well also. So I definitely recommend everyone taking a class with Martin, he's a great professional photographer.

Thanks Tap for your kind review. I'm glad that you were both free the following day to complete the practical part of the course. Its not much fun taking images in the rain and gale force winds!!

I am interested in scheduling a workshop day. I have never been to the Lake District. When I visit it is usually to Devon and I'm really looking forward to exploring and getting some great shots. I cant seem to find your website or email to contact about prices and availability and how far to schedule in advance. Any answers or contact info would be greatly appreciated. I want to make sure and get as much out of my visit as possible.

Hi
I’d love to take you put on a photography workshop. You will love the Lake District. You can find details of my courses or contact me at martinlawrencephotography. Trip Advisor won’t let me send a Link. Coincidentally, I am in the USA at the moment in Page, Arizona having just left Mesa Verde, Colorado!
Hope to hear from you soon.

We are on holiday staying at Bassenthwaite. I was wondering if you would be free to do a 1 to 1 session for my husband on 23/6. I am going to Wool fest in Cockermouth and he really is more into photography than woolly things! My phono no is 07984337090. Would appreciate a call if you are free or have any courses for that day
Written 21 June 2017
Hi there
I have checked the weather on several websites for Friday and it is due to rain for most of the day I'm afraid. I really wouldn't want to disappoint your husband by taking him out in such weather spending our time dodging in and out, constantly wiping off our lenses and risking damage to his photography equipment etc... It would be far from ideal. Please contact me again if you are up this way as I really would have loved to have taken your husband out for a photography day.
