About
Leicester is privileged to have one of the best-preserved timber framed halls in the country dating back 600 years. The Guildhall is a historic building and the oldest building still in use in the city. It was Leicester’s first police station and between 1876 and the 1900’s and saw many unsavoury characters pass through its doors. The Great Hall itself was built in about 1390 as a meeting place for the Guild of Corpus Christi (a small but powerful group of businessmen and gentry) and it’s also believed that Shakespeare performed here during Tudor times. Today, the Guildhall is best known as an excellent performance venue, attracting acts from across the country. It’s also known as a museum where visitors can step back in time and come face to face with Crankie Gemmie and Emma Smith, two of Leicester's notorious pick-pockets who can be found lurking in the Victorian police cells. The museum is also home to the Medieval Leicester galleries and The White Rose Cafe.

- fire-tower3,099 contributionsThe tour was informativeA short walk from St Nicholas Church is the Guildhall Museum. When we arrived and entered the museum, there was a lady who enquired if we were there to joined the guided tour. We told her that we did not sign up for it but as there was only a couple who did, she invited us to join the tour. The tour was informative and we enjoyed the historical events leading to the building being constructed and knowing the history of the various items being displayed. The building is very well kept, and the staff are friendly. Entry to the Guildhall Musrum is free.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 October 2023
- Gardengel-IoWWest Sussex, United Kingdom1,014 contributionsGreat free attractionOpen daily 11-4.30, Free entry although donations welcome of course. Amazingly intact building for some 600 years old. You can go through the rooms, into the courtyard and upstairs. Some interesting exhibits – some gruesome! It is next to Leicester cathedral (free and worth a look) and very near the King Richard III museum (fee) The attached café was good for a coffee and snackVisited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 10 December 2023
- Patricia ELeicester, United Kingdom69 contributionsAlways excellent to visit but wonderful for a special occasionI have always loved this beautiful medieval building and have visited it several times since we moved to Leicester three years ago. I had a big birthday last weekend and thought I would be having a surprise meal at a restaurant but when we turned towards the Guildhall and discovered my family had organised a party there for me I was speechless! It was a dream come true, I know weddings and events are held there (I’ve been to a few events) but couldn’t have imagined a party for me. It was a wonderful evening, guests particularly loved visiting the cells. A huge thank you to Ben, my family said he was so helpful in arranging the party and welcoming guests on the evening and Bethan who with Ben ran the bar. An unforgettable evening at the Guildhall.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 February 2024
- AussienannaWangaratta, Australia154 contributionsA must visit. This Guild Hall was visit was the highlight of our Leicester visit. It is a remarkable example of an early Guild Hall, and the story boards give excellent information on its history and function through the ages. The library with its fine collection of ancient books is a bonus. A must visit site,Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 April 2024
- Rebecca MHell, Michigan139 contributionsFree and Close to Richard IIII stumbled into this museum on a day trip to Leicester. It is right next to the Richard III museum where his bones were found and the church where they are interred. Entry is free, and the building rich in history. It took me about 25 minutes to see most everything. It has a cute interactive game to engage children in learning about the medieval times, with hands on tasks in most rooms. The artifacts are fascinating, the great hall impressive, and the curating well done. I would definitely recommend this to most anyone with any interest in history, even families with kids.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 6 May 2024
- Gena.25Leicestershire, United Kingdom241 contributionsFree entry, good for affordable venue hire, good for a one time visitLocated next to Leicester catherdral, this building is a small museum showing a small amount of old archifacts during the Tudor times. Also it has a large hall which can be hired for events and weddings at a great value. There is a jail room where you see in rooms where people were locked up many years ago. There is a gift shop and it is free entry but really its only worth the one visit.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 18 May 2024

We visited the Christmas Carol as performed by Gerald Dickens. I brought along my husband and two sons aged 9 and 10. It was AMAZING. My husband said after he came along for me but was blown away by how much he was entertained.
He couldn't believe how well Gerald impersonated the different characters and my youngest has now requested to see more live theatre (it was the first event of this type that he has seen).
As for me I expected it to be magic and it was. I'd re-read the story in anticipation and it was wonderful to hear the words I'd recently read be brought to life in such a captivating way- at points I was joining in with those well known lines in my head. I'll remember this forever.
I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to see this and am so thankful that the ticket price made it affordable for the whole family.
Absolutely wonderful.

This was extremely information and had lots of interesting items that took you back to the medieval history of Leicester. Much larger than it looks from the outside the building itself is an exhibit and was stunning to walk through and see the architecture and absolutely stunning building.
Lovely to wander through and look at the exhibit and learn more about the history while seeing the numerous items there. Very informative and interesting with things for people of all interests and ages.
Also lots of amusing notes left on items to freshen up the normal 'do not sit' 'do not touch' that are in historical buildings that were extremely amusing to read as going around

This has got to be one of the best historical buildings in the East Midlands. Its close to the Cathedral and the Richard 3rd centre and is well worth a visit if you enjoy your history.
It was "restored" in the 1920s but still feels like an authentic historical building.

I've visited the Guild Hall a few times for art trips as well as exhibitions and events (such as the Beautiful Death Exhibition), and every time I've visited it has been a lovely experience. I love the atmosphere and getting to learn about the things that have happened within those old walls. Definitely a very characteristic place to visit, and a fun building to draw!

I came across this historic building completely by accident, not even being aware of it's existence. It's remarkably well preserved given how old it is. It's tucked round the back of the Cathedral. The receptionist was very welcoming

One of my favourite places to visit in Leicester. No matter how many times I've been, I'm still blown away by how beautiful the place is. The sense of history that flows through the building itself, is almost magical, and even entertains my eldest. It's always a treat to visit as the staff as so kind, patient and ready to answer any questions.
They hold some amazing shows there too, including a gloriously brilliant Laurel and Hardy show.

Great place to visit to see some history of Leicester and what its custodians got up to. Lots of little nooks and crannies tucked away to explore and kids will love the gaol! Surprising little gem hidden away and very unassuming. I bet lots of people walk straight past it without knowing its even there! Spend an hour or so walking round and you'll come away enriched. Also look out for the nights of entertainment in the Guildhall from kids theatre to spooky readings at Halloween!

Went for a free tour of the building this morning. Mark was very knowledgeable about this fantastic old building. I learnt so much. Amazing how the building has stood the test of time and how it has been extended several times. Looking forward to seeing a couple of shows here later in the year, Sunday at the Musicals and Gail Morecambe talking about her dad, Eric. It’s great that the building is used for events as well as a museum.

This stunning building is a must see when visiting Leicester City. It is beautifully preserved and has so much of interest inside.
Staff were extremely friendly when we visited to see the ‘rocket round leicester’ displays.
The artefacts and information boards are extremely well laid out and interesting.
The recommended donation of £3 pp is definitely worth it.

This attraction is free so is a great place to go with a family that likes a bit of history. There is a trail for children as well as lots of interesting information about how a guild hall, especially this one, worked. Fascinating and very well looked after. A good café too and right next to the cathedral in the centre of Leicester. Well worth a visit. A nice surprise.

Hello, we are thinking about having our wedding here at the Guildhall but do not know where to go afterwards for a sit down dinner/food or evening party? any suggestions for those of you that were married here? I know Hotel Maiyango does not have the restaurant and doesn't cater for wedding receptions anymore.
Many Thanks,

Hello, we very much hope you do choose us at The Guildhall!
We don't have formal arrangements with other venues to continue your wedding celebrations, but Wgyston's House and St Martins House are both lovely places on our door step! Hope they can help with your requirements for catering/party etc!
All best, Leicester Museums

Is the Richard III exhibition in the Guildhall ?
Written 28 January 2017
Hi Lee, the Richard III exhibition at The Guildhall was a temporary one, but there's now a Leicester Medieval exhibition (free admission) on display.
The Richard III Visitor Centre across the road from the Guildhall and Leicester Cathedral is the place now to go for all things Richard!
