Those involved in planning the layout and information provided in this visitors centre did a truly excellent job in my opinion. It is full of interesting facts regarding the history of that time, the excavation of the car park (you couldn’t make it up) and the DNA analysis that categorically proves that the skeleton is that of Richard III. Our visit was enhanced by my friend’s in-depth knowledge of this period in history which lead to interesting chats with the very knowledgable guides on site. I personally think this centre is interesting for adults and children alike and highly recommend a visit. Do pop along to the Cathedral too (which is purely an optional donation rather than an entrance fee) to see King Richard III’s tomb and the new stained glass windows and a good 5 minute video of the making of the tomb. Fabulous day out which, at the grand age of 60, has inspired me to read up more/refresh my memory on the Plantagenets etc.

Visited early Sunday so quite quiet, v modern looking centre, £10 ticket (can get £1 off pre booking), first room was a short film introduction which was slightly confusing as the characters appeared to be random, next room was full of information about who was who in the War of the Roses, all v well displayed with various weapons doted about the walls, then a room about the Princes in the Tower and leading into the battle of Bosworth Field. Then go upstairs to rooms which looked at Richard through history/film/plays then finally a large room explaining about the dig and the science behind identifying who the bones belonged too. From there you go downstairs to the grave site where there was a guide explaining what was found and where. All v well laid out, fairly clear and the techno bits worked well.
The grave of Richard the 3rd is in the cathedral, a 5 minute walk away.
Very nice large cafe, reasonable prices.
We spent about 3 hours here in total, found it all very interesting and would recommend visiting.

It’s great that you explored the various rooms—from the introduction and War of the Roses information to the exhibits on Richard III’s portrayal in history and the science behind the dig. We’re also pleased you found the grave site well explained and the technology engaging.
It’s wonderful to hear you enjoyed the café as well and that you spent a good amount of time exploring everything. Thank you for the recommendation, and we hope to welcome you back in the future!

The easiest way by car to visit The King Richard III Centre and his tomb in Leicester Cathedral is to use one of the park and ride facilities. From the bus drop off point in the city centre it is just a short walk. Book in the Cathedral for a guided tour is recommended as the entertaining information given by the volunteer guides is first class. Note that if a guide is not present you will not be able to go close to the tomb as it is roped off for protection. Richard III Coat of Arms on his tomb is not painted but made from over 350 pieces of precious stones, so be aware that this must not be touched as oils from our hands will damage it. There are videos showing the making of the tomb. A short walk from the Cathedral brings you to the Centre with his statue opposite it. Here you will learn some of the history of Richard III and details of finding and recovering his remains and the internment of the last Plantagenet King in the Cathedral. There is a cafe, gift shop and toilets.

Incredible museum outlining the discovery of King Richard III. Beautifully presented, easy to understand, emotional display of his grave site, the dedication of all involved in finding him, especially Philippa Langley, the DNA and the reconstruction of his face. Absolutely brilliant, and like Bosworth, the admission gives you a 12 month revisit free of charge. Thank you to all who created this amazing museum. I was very impressed.

This is a well developed centre, where you purchase a ticket that allows you to enter for an entire year.
The found floor is about how Richard came to the throne and his ultimate death, and end to the war of the roses.
The upper floor is the search for the lost King, buried in Greyfriars church and found under a card park.
The excavation is preserved quite well in a nice quiet setting.
Just over the road is his tomb at the Cathedral.
A must visit and the cafe is nice too.

It cost £11.50 per adult with a free year reentry. When beginning the exhibition, it has a room full of royal history connections explaining the buildup of the war of the roses. there is a big area telling the events leading to the battle of Bosworth. Then there is another exhibit upstairs (available lifts) of theatre and film based on Richard III, an exhibit explaining the findings of Richard III, and what they discovered when they uncovered him. One thing they didnt need was an exhibit of a digger, and a helmet and viz vest.
Back on the ground floor there is a cafe with a craft area for kids where they can make their own crowns, toliets, and seating outdoors. The staff bring the coffee to you which is a nice change.
There is another part located by the gift shop where Richard III grave was located. Its amazing to see how shallow it was.
Overall, a good exhibition worth visiting maybe more than once.

Our trip to Leicester was specifically to go to the visitor centre and we were not disappointed. We'd travelled for nearly 3 hours so a visit to the cafe was required and the coffee was delicious, my husband enjoyed a hearty pasty and service was with a smile. The grave site of Richard is well displayed and fascinating to see-my husband was very moved and went in again at the end of the tour. The other exhibits show the interesting history of the Plantagenet's and the story of the discovery of Richards remains. Staff in every area, displays, cafe and gift shop are all really nice, chatty and helpful. Fabulous visit-thank you.

This relatively new museum celebrates the finding of the remains of Richard III in the last 15 years. The first floor tells the history of the famous king from the War of the Roses. The second floor goes in depth telling the recent history of finding bones buried under a car park, and how scientists confirmed their identity with DNA. The exhibits are all fresh and in good condition. I would definitely recommend this stop for anyone into history or science mysteries.

We found the museum very interesting and it provides an excellent record it the history of that time in great detail. The detective work and investigation prior to the dig also very interesting . I would have liked to see more information on the dig and photos or videos of finds etc. not sure I would take the grand kids as it’s info heavy but information on the dog would probably hold them.

Fantastic and inspiring exhibition about Ruchard III and how he was discovered too. Loved it. The exhibition was sensitive and even handed using a number of techniques to tell the story. We spent a good 3 hours enjoying and spent the rest of the day at the cathedral across the road. Fantastic day out.

Went to Leicester last week from Harrogate, used Meynells Gorse park and ride just off the M1, frequent and quick service drops off and picks up at Jubilee Square, right in the city centre, couple of minutes to the Guildhall or Cathedral.

I have been a fan of King Richard even before he was found in the car park so a trip to Leicester is a must on my upcoming trip to the U.K.! I will be taking the train from London and plan to purchase advance train tickets. How long should I plan to spend in Leicester visiting both the Visitor Center and the Cathedral? Aside from Bosworth Field, what other sights are recommended? Any other tips? Thank you!
Written 1 February 2018
If you allow 2hrs for the Richard III centre and 30 minutes for the cathedral that would probably be sufficient, but I recommend you stop by the Guildhall, it’s right next to the Cathedral and Just a short walk away is St. Nicks, Leicester’s oldest place of worship and right next to that is the Jewry Wall museum which is really good. You could then go to Wyggeston House for a drink and then stroll through the castle gardens, depending on the weather
