- TwigletMatlock, United Kingdom111 contributionsVery Good Free Entry MuseumThese days you don't get much for free, so hats off to Lincolnshire for keeping this very interesting museum open and free for visitors. We were welcomed by a friendly and helpful volunteer, and enjoyed a variety of displays, from a vintage style drapers and grocer's shop to 'Daphne' the huge world war tank. Didn't have time for a cuppa in the cafe but will pop in next time. It's important we remember our history and heritage, so thank you to all staff and volunteers, and those decision makers who maintain the funding.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 17 February 2024
- Joasi23South Yorkshire, United Kingdom2,072 contributionsWe loved itWhat a fabulous place. Surpassed our expectations, it’s so vast and varied. Each section was well presented and prompted lots of conversations, especially the film of the tank. Don’t expect a stuffy boring half hour walk round some tired old exhibits, the standard of displays was excellent. Free entry but we all chucked a voluntary contribution in and happy to do so, all the staff were lovely.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 March 2024
- SteveandAnne1991Sheffield, United Kingdom22 contributionsA place for the whole family to visit. What a great place to spend a rainy morning (not obligatory, it would be just as good on a sunny afternoon). Plenty of exhibits to stir the memory cells of those of a certain generation, but also plenty to remind younger people what our parents, grandparents, and real people had to experience. It covers many aspects of everyday life and also the more poignant eras of our recent history. Oh, and they have a real tank! A WW1 female tank, who knew they had male and female tanks? Go and find out why! And a reminder that whilst it's free to go in, these places need donations to survive.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 March 2024
- BraindamagedbaronNewark-on-Trent, United Kingdom1,798 contributionsA great and FREE gemYou don't get much in this life for nothing any more. So when you happen across a museum that is totally free to enter for the whole family it really is too good to miss. And the Museum Of Lincolnshire Life doesn't let you down in any way. A really interesting glimpse into life as it once would have been. Interesting exhibits at every turn and something to catch the eye of every member of the family. A great way to spend an hour so just having a good look around and casting your eye over the history on offer.Visited January 2024Travelled with familyWritten 23 March 2024
- alisdair tWorkington, United Kingdom6,398 contributionsAmazing small museum, worth a visitThis is our second visit here, first many years ago. Its free to enter, but leave a donation for the upkeep. Most of the exhibits are housed in the old barracks. There is a small section dedicated to the Lincolnshire regiment, and lots of old machinery, and a tank. I liked the old rooms of the houses best, and the shops from years gone by. There is a small cafe, which is rather nice, and toiletsVisited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 17 April 2024
- DevonDozer30 contributionsIf you're feeling dim, ask for TimWe recently moved up to Lincolnshire from South Devon. Reading around some history of engineering stuff I discovered what a rich and innovative source Lincolnshire has been to the field. I was amazed. On our way back home in South Lincs from a trip 'up North', we called in here so that I could see a surviving piece of equipment in the flesh. It was very near to closing time, but Tim understood what I wanted and pointed me in the right direction with great enthusiasm, so I got to see what I wanted without delay. Tim was great - and I will certainly be going back. Lincs is a big country & it is well over an hour's drive from home, but I think it's a fabulous place & will be making the effort to go back soon.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 July 2024
- annyb291Darlington, United Kingdom18 contributionsVery interesting museum. Lovely staff.Went Tuesday 30th July with my husband and an older relative and we all found it interesting. We haven't yet completed it and hope to go back again to look at the displays upstairs. The lady (staff or volunteer) in one of the rooms who was explaining about the practices of seance holders etc. was very interesting. The greatest asset is the staff - the 2 gentlemen in reception were very friendly, passionate about the museum and went out of their way to help us. Their kindness was much appreciated.Visited July 2024Travelled with familyWritten 2 August 2024

I took my Dad to visit the museum. It was very interesting for him (in his 80’s) and myself in my 40’s. I went with an open mind thinking it would be small and a quick visit, but there is lots to see.
There is free parking outside and a lovely welcoming reception area, with two friendly ladies who will help and guide you with your visit.
There are toilets, a book shop and gift shop too.
I would highly recommend this museum, even young children would enjoy parts of it.
Lots of outside space and a play area too. We loved it and would definitely return.

Great Museum to visit, especially with kids as there are lots of cool things to do and interact with. Free to enter but a donation is welcomed and when you know its going to the upkeep of such a place its not a problem. As a military historian I really enjoyed seeing the WWI Tank they have there, as well as the building itself. Nice staff too.

Interesting collections focussing on agriculture, transport, industry and militaria particular to Lincolnshire. Housed in former barracks close to city centre and castle. Cafe rather basic but at least it was open. Upstairs in gatehouse building had a large open space that should have been filled with something temporarily. Good accessibility throughout.

This place is an absolute gem. The exhibits are extensive and interesting in a great old building.
There's a blend of local and military history. A huge amount of old vehicles, info about the development of the tank etc. Then, there's all the super displays of shop and room inners... these are very inspiring for Steampunk or history buffs.
There's a super cheap cafe in a book shop too.
I'll be nipping over here inbetween events at the Asylum Steampunk events next year to grab lunch. Thank you for maintaining such a fabulous place and making it accessible to all. 🙂

This is a cracking museum.
Covering so many aspects of a bygone life, possibly a better life.
Travel through the museums room settings from parlours to pharmacies.
So much militaria , charting the history of Lincolnshire's proud military past.
The museum also showcases Lincolnshire's heavy engineering capabilities from tractors to tanks. A fine example of the first tank can be seen ' Mother '.
Too late for the food , but that all looked reasonably priced.
A good souvenir shop and friendly staff.
What more could you ask for!
And it's all FREE, but don't be mean and leave a suitable donation.
Little gems like this are few and far between.
Well done.

We decided to visit Lincoln for the day and stopped off at this museum first. I’ll start by saying that this place is completely free to visit so it is worth doing. Being free, I didn’t expect there to be so much to see. The museum offers everything from Victorian Lincolnshire to the world wars. With all of the information on display, you can spend a good few hours looking around the museum.
We had a fantastic time visiting this museum and would highly recommend you visit if you’re in the area.

It’d been quite a few years since we last visited this museum and couldn’t remember too much about it. We were very impressed with the whole place. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable and if they didn’t know the answer, they quickly went and found someone who did. We really enjoyed our visit. I’d definitely recommend going.

Excellent free museum to visit, from the free parking outside to the very friendly welcome from the ladies in Reception, working your way through the facinating exhibitions to the second hand book store, it's a great visit from start to finish.
Lots of rooms and shops set up as old style Victoriana, all interesting,
But for me the highlight was the exhibition on the Lincolnshire Regiments history, absolutely fascinating, the stories of their VCs were thrilling, and then the moving story of the the Beechey brothers, Amy Beechey had eight sons and five never returned from the Great War, I must admit I found myself welling up as I read their story.
Then onto to some weird and wonderful farm equipment and how Lincoln became a driving force in engineering, and helping to win the war with the first tanks, built and designed here, something for Lincoln to be proud of.
This museum is well worth a visit, and I'm amazed I've lived here 30+ yuears and this is my first trip here, and I urge anyone to donate something when you visit (I did and I'm tight!!)

Is there any parking at the site as I am bringing my elderly parents next Monday 10.30am and want to look round then go to the minster. My dad is limited in walking around. Thanks. Neil
Written 19 September 2019
Hi, the Lincolnshire Life Museum has a car park - it isn't huge but runs in front of the museum and down the side and there are a number of spaces. We parked there with no issues. Street parking is also available around and about but a lot is restricted permit holder parking so be careful. The streets around are flat so access is decent. It is a few minutes walk from the Minster but probably too much to walk if your Dad is limited with walking. Took us about 5 minutes to walk from one to the other. Some cobbles and a few uneven pavements but otherwise ok.

Every day, 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (Last entry 4:00 p.m., but I'd certainly give it more than a half hour!) Note that the website says Mon. - Sun., but I'd double check with the TI Centrbefore going on Sunday. The TI, right on the square approaching the unmissable Cathedral, is very helpful!

Yes definitely and lift access to the second floor in main building.

Yes, in the square within the museum there are seats and a small playground for kiddies. On a rainy day I'm not sure as the cafe caters for food/drink.
