- Beverley W1 contributionDefinitely worth a visitGreat visit to Lincoln Castle. So pleased we did the free guided tour. Thank you to our guide Martin who was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic even though it was freezing cold and very foggy. Excellent job.Visited December 2022Written 11 December 2022
- Michelle SLincoln, United Kingdom850 contributionsHistoric building in your own city...surely its rude not to visit 😀Went to the illuminations at Lincoln Castle, and this Castle never ceases to amazes me, we love that it is on our doorstep and is so beautiful even without the lights, the lights just make it look more impressive, and fun...and fun grts kids to look and lesrn!! the people that have put the effort into making it look this beautiful should be proud of themselves...you need to have a walk around, & look at the beauty of the illuminations, we like the fact they have added new bits, animated reindeer are wonderful, but we need to look through the lights and music and see our history still standing, making us proud everyday, when you look up from the city and see it standing along side the Cathedral. We will be bringing our new granddaughter to this light illuminations next year and showing her one of Lincoln beautiful Historic Building!!Thank you so much for your lovely review. We are delighted you enjoyed the Castle illuminations so much and recognised the little additions we have made. We think the reindeer need names - perhaps a competition next year!? - J060273Pocklington, United Kingdom13 contributionsFascinating and EntertainingFantastic day at the castle, tour guide Ken Moore was factual, funny, engaging and made a cold tour at -1degree into a warm and entertaining experience. I had no idea of the importance of Lincoln Castle in British History until now. The prison too was fascinating, especially the separatist chapel. Everyone we talked too were enthusiastic and knowledgeable.Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your visit. We really do take great pleasure in reading about visitors experiences. - Jan DBinissalem, Spain38 contributionsStunning castle and viewsWe booked the castle wall walk and it was most enjoyable. The castle is well preserved and very interesting. We returned at 1700hrs hoping to see it lit up but the gates had closed which was a shame as it must have been spectacular with the amazing xmas lighting.Sorry you were disappointed not to see the grounds lit up - we do close the gates before opening them for our evening guests so that they are hopefully wowed by the experience! - Emma SColchester, United Kingdom8 contributionsPerfectly preserved and informative with a phenomenal view to boot.Really interesting visit, largely of the prison followed by the wall walk. Disappointing that the Magna Carta cinema was closed as it would have deepened our knowledge on why this is such an important document. We nonetheless really enjoyed our visit, from where incidentally you take on amazing views of the city.So pleased you enjoyed your visit, you certainly took some lovely photographs. - EdwardSanta Rosa, California1,953 contributionsNice Castle and Prison with ViewsWe explored Lincoln Castle when spending several days in Lincoln over Christmas, 2022. It has a nice, complete and well-preserved wall and one can walk all along the walls, which provide great views of the city. Otherwise, inside there is the prison building, with an interesting and well-preserved Victorian prison to explore, with gift shop and cafe. The prison is interesting due to its experiment at complete isolation for prisoners, who initially were even kept separate during services in the chapel. The castle is home to one of the 4 original surviving copies of the Magna Carta, but the document was away for preservation when we visited. However, we were able to see original Charter of the Forest, from the same time period and providing people greater rights regarding royal "forest" land. At night, we did the lighted Christmas walk, which was also nice.Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review of your visit(s). So pleased you enjoyed it so much. - 724veracBristol, United Kingdom37 contributionsGreat castle, lots to seeGreat castle, wonderful walk round the walls, with magnificent views of the cathedral. Can walk around inside the castle walls free of charge (Lincoln Crown Court is housed within the walls) but you have to pay to walk on the walls. Also included in the entrance charge is a guided talk round the grounds, going into the history of the castle and Lincoln generally from Roman times onwards. Wonderfully entertaining guide. Also included is visit to the Victorian prison in the grounds with its unusual prisoners' chapel, and to the vault containing one of the only four copies of Magna Carta in the country - sadly put away in storage for winter when we visited. We did however see one of only two remaining copies of the 1217 Charter of the Forest and the 1225 affirmation of that Charter - a most surprising sight as they are incredibly small. Huge amount of history attached to the castle, well worth a visit, but if you're interested in seeing Magna Carta, check online first to ensure it is back on display.Thank you do much for taking the time to leave a review, we really do appreciate it. - yesfoodmanAlveston, United Kingdom5 contributionsGet a tour with Ken!We went on the 11am tour with Ken Moore during our visit. We throughly enjoyed our tour with him and would highly recommend. He was very well informed and had good jokes; he made the tour light hearted and very engaging. He asked us where we were from before the tour which made us feel more comfortable and at ease. Questions could be asked throughout which was lovely. The prison is good with lots of activities for children and has very clear information although is a bit tricky to remember where you are as it looks the same! The castle wall walk is very beautiful with good information, although there are steps, just as a heads up. Ken definitely made our trip memorable and and the information helped when we went around afterwards.Than you for taking the time to leave a review. I'm sure Ken will be delighted you enjoyed his tour so much. A great place to visit. There is a nice walk along the inside walls. You can get audio and it’s very informative and interested our teenage son. When we visited they had the smoking and groaning dragons, which were great. Nice views of the cathedral from the walls. We were also treated to a display by the Red Arrows. I think they were training as they are apparently based nearby. They did two loop the loops and also flew right over our heads. Fantastic! The lift was out of order so not currently suitable if you are less able to walk up the steps. You can walk through the grounds for free too but need to pay for the walls walk and audio, which is currently about £11 each.

We joined Ken Moore for a tour of the upper part of Lincoln including a guided walk through the castle grounds. What a fantastic way to spend a morning! Ken’s tour was excellent - interesting and entertaining throughout. We can highly recommend him as a Lincoln Castle guide.

We came back to see the Magna Carta and were not disappointed as the cinema intro was great. My husband loves the prison Chapel. Unfortunately the wall walk was closed during our visit but we still enjoyed our stay.

First time visit to Lincoln so seeing the castle was a must. We bought the day ticket, which included the Medieval Wall Walk (with amazing views of Lincoln and the Cathedral), the Victorian prison, and of course, the Magna Carta.
We had a free tour with Paul, which was great. It lasted just over an hour and was very interesting. Would recommend. If we lived closer, I’d have purchased the annual pass

Our first visit to Lincoln city, so we thought we would take a tour of the castle and we were not disappointed. The whole experience was made so much more enjoyable by our guide, Ken - he was just brilliant. His knowledge of the history of the castle and Lincoln city was incredible and the way it was imparted to us with such passion and humour was both interesting and entertaining. Ken should be on stage! Definitely coming back.

What a lovely place to visit. So much history! We did the guided tour and our guide Ken Moore was truly fantastic, his knowledge was way better than his jokes 😂😂 . Seriously he was brilliant and made our tour fly by. We were so lucky to have a wonderful sunny day which really made the wall walk a great experience.

We had an amazing day at Lincoln Castle. The Magna Carta is incredible to see, and the display and film gives very helpful context. We had an entertaining and informative tour by Ken, an excellent tour guide who really knows his stuff! Great service at the cafe too.

how do I buy a joint ticket for the castle, prison and the cathedral ?
LincolnCastle
Lincoln, UK
Joint tickets between the Cathedral and Castle haven't been offered for a number of years now. The Castle day ticket offers great value as you get access to three unique attractions in one - the medieval wall walk, the Magna Carta vault and the Victorian prison (with the world's only remaining original separatist prison system chapel) - which you can get either on site from the Shop or online. We hope to see everyone soon!

Do you have to pre-book or can you buy tickets on the day?
Pearltherover
Nottingham, UK43 contributions
If you have a restriction on when you can visit the castle then it may be better to pre-book to ensure you get the time slot you are looking for.
Hi does the entry fee include all 3 attractions? Or do they have to be bought separately? Thank you.
Normally happy with everything.
Leicestershire, UK19 contributions
Entry into the grounds is free.
If you want to walk the battlements, visit the Magna Carta exhibition and the chapel/prison and have a guided tour buy a day ticket .
Well worth it and very good value.

How long do you need here to do all that the combo ticket gets you into
Ie the walls, prison etc
Would 3hrs be enough
LincolnCastle
Lincoln, UK
A lot depends on how much of the information you read and how many of the films you watch - also how fast you walk! I would say 3 hours is a fair amount of time.
Hi, is this castle wheelchair friendly .
Thanks
Susan

Wheelchair users can access the Magna Carta Vault and all levels of the prison. With regards to the wall there is a lift to take you up to the walls but only the East Wall is accessible (the one over looking the Cathedral). Hope that helps.

How long do you need to visit here? Would an afternoon be ok or is it a full day thing? Thanks!
LincolnCastle
Lincoln, UK
I would say 2-3 hours. It really depends how many of the films you watch and whether you down load the audio guide on the wall walk.

Why on the website does it charge separately for castle, prison and wall walk yet people have mentioned on here it’s all included in one price?
clarkrfamily
Bodmin, UK114 contributions
Well I can now confirm that the castle day pass includes everything but I suppose if you want to do just part of the experience you can, for example we may go back later in the year and just do the walked wall for the views. However I think the website should explain it better
