About
An iconic landmark, St Luke's 'Bombed Out' Church has been at the heart of Liverpool since 1832. Hollowed by an incendiary device in the May Blitz of 1941, the church today functions as a living war memorial and creative community hub. Since 2007 the church has been operating as a managed ruin and multidisciplinary arts venue with a programme of curated events, community engagement and creative learning projects. A gateway building within the city, crucial to both its past and present, the Bombed Out Church is a place for everyone. A committed team from diverse backgrounds have devoted tens of thousands of hours to keeping St Luke's Church open to the public and reinvigorated by the arts. Bombed Out Church recently became a Community Interest Company and has been supported on its route to international recognition by a dedicated community of friends and volunteers. Together, Bombed Out Church stands as testament to history and to the spirit of Liverpool.

- mjMaryland94 contributionsA place of quiet reflection in a very busy cityIt’s worth seeking this out. We arrived on a partly cloudy day making this even more atmospheric. There’s a very somber feeling here, yet the statue out front offers a reminder that war can also bring people together even if only temporary. It’s a beautiful place, one that will stay with you long after you leave.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 21 October 2023
- 400mandaLondon, United Kingdom300 contributionsHistorical ChurchFree to enter, but recommended £2 donation on arrival. Good for photographers on a sunny day. You are given a laminated information sheet on arrival with some history of the Church, which you return at the end of the visit. No formal guides as such and it does not take long to look around. 15-20 minutes.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 May 2024

We had heard about this place and went along. You pay something like £2 to go in and they give you a laminated card with the history of the place. Although it is so very close to a busy road, it really did not feel like that at all. With no windows and no roof, it should have been noisy but it wasn't. It was such a peaceful, tranquil place - it was like the world stopped outside whilst we were inside! The sculpture in the surrounding gardens was thought provoking. Can imagine when they have events on here, it would be a different feel but would definitely go there again

Worth a visit. Despite being hollowed out during the early 1940’s by an incendiary device, volunteers have dedicated many hours and now successfully keep this building open despite not being rebuilt. Great community space with outdoors restaurant

a fitting tribute to the resilience of the Liverpool people during that horrific time during WW2. Occasional displays and artistic events within the walls. Enjoy the peaceful gardens close by a busy main road

This bombed out church has historic value, which is why it stands today. It is now used to promote peace and understanding. I love the statuse of All Together in the yard in front of the church. Entry is a donation of some kind. Stop here to see the devastating effects of war and go away with the idea of being a better citizen of the world.

Nice selection of bars within the grounds. Good to see the utilisation of the grounds.
Skeleton of the church structure remains. The interior is open for a couple of hours at weekends I understand. Nice to see it. Nice selection of drinks available in the bars around the grounds. Good place to relax.

I had my birthday drinks here on Friday and oh my god we had such a good time. The atmosphere was lovely and cosy, very friendly staff, lots of fairy lights and nice drinks. Dan, the manager, organised everything so it looked great and went swiftly to plan. Easy and clean accessible toilets and lots of hand sanitizer dotted round to zap away the Covid germs. Definitely will be booking here again for celebration drinks- in my opinion it’s the best Covid safe zone to party in Liverpool !

Such a lovely peaceful place to sit down and enjoy the surroundings. Amazing historical building. A bombed out church, with some moving monuments in the grounds. Tables, chairs, a bar serving hot and cold drinks, alcoholic or non. It's well worth stopping in and seeing what's going on. Host and Staff attentive and very helpful. Great experience.

I went to England about 20 years ago. I visited a church that was bombed during WW2 and the walls were left like this one. I am convinced the one I saw was right next to a rebuilt church. The newer one was modern with metal angel statues on the side. Does anyone know what church I saw or is this a figment of my imagination?

Would like to visit church this Sunday 04/01/15. Can you gain access to it.

The gardens are always open so you can look around the outside. Not sure if the church itself will be open. Only down the hill from the two catherdrals and also the Chinese Arch so you could always go there also. Enjoy your visit.
