Chalybeate spring is magical, the water has healing qualities so it is said. It’s situated within the grounds of st James cemetery on the site of the Anglican cathedral, one of Liverpool’s finest pieces of architecture. There is lots to do within the cathedral itself, including the must see trip to the very top of the cathedral via the elevator. The panoramic view of the river Mersey and the three graces, from up there is quite a sight to behold. I often visit the Anglican cathedral and every time I do, I am drawn to st James cemetery, especially Chalybeate spring, the place is hauntingly beautiful.

Walking through St James Gardens is something I love doing ,one of my favourite sites here is Charlybeate Spring.
This is a natural spring that was discovered in 1773 by quarrymen ,it has to be remembered that this garden area was a quarry until 1829 when it then became the city cemetery, the spring has no connections with holy water or connections with the cathedral as the magnificent Liverpool Cathedral was constructed between 1904 -1978 ,as a former cemetery its regarded as one of the most haunted sites in Liverpool, many ghost walk tours pass through this garden area ,its said that mischievous spirits haunt the spring and if the water from the spring is boiled it turns black, only a myth but I love it ,its most definitely well worth checking out if you're walking through St James Gardens.

This is a very serene place to visit. We also visit Charlybeate Spring which is a Natural spring. Located in St James Gardens which is behind and below Liverpool Cathedral is Charlybeate Spring. This is not a holy well as the quarry that is now St James Gardens predates the Victorian cathedral.

My twin brother Stephen and I were wandering through St James Cemetery Gardens and one of its most definitely and mysterious sites is Charlybeate Spring.
Discovered in 1773 by workmen , a local surgeon extolled the virtues of the spring water ,hinted at the fact it was a cure all for rickets, stomach ailments, bad eyesight but as one of the most haunted area's of Liverpool namely St James Gardens, a former cemetery a myth has grown up about the fact that trapped spirits within the park area contaminated the waters ,its said if the spring water is boiled it turns black ,I know its a myth but its a fun myth and adds to the joy of walking through St James Cemetery Gardens.

Located in St James Gardens which is behind and below Liverpool Cathedral is Charlybeate Spring.
This is no holy well as the quarry that is now St James Gardens predates the Victorian cathedral.
When the quarry was being worked the spring was discovered in 1773 ,a local surgeon called Worthington was quick to extol the virtues about the benefits of the spring water ,he wrote that the water was good for " loss of appetite, nervous disorders, slowness of spirit ,headache is proceeding from crudities of the stomach ,rickets and weak eyes " ,well he seemed convinced, dont think I would be brave enough to guzzle on the spring water .
Charlybeate means containing iron ,this is no surprise as when it was a quarry veins of iron ore were discovered, its a nice aspect of St James Gardens and definitely well worth checking out if your planning a visit to Liverpool Cathedral and St James Garden.
