Superb tour - entertaining and expert guides (Phil & Fiona) lead a small group through the history and operation of the tunnel. You visit the old control room, exhaust shaft, huge fresh air ventilation fan area (and see the fans start up) then descend to road level to see traffic whizzing by. But that’s not all, you then walk along the fresh air passages fed from the fans you saw earlier and emerge beneath the roadway in a tunnel originally earmarked to be a tramway and learn about the safety features now built in. There are around 600 steps in total but about three quarters of the upward flights can be bypassed in small lifts. Being a road tunnel there are some grubby areas - particularly the exhaust shaft stairs - so dress appropriately and expect dirty hands if you use the hand rails. Safety hard hats and high visibility jackets are provided and there are toilet and hand wash facilities at the start and end. Guys this is incredibly good value for money for a 2 hr behind the scenes experience of a tunnel nearing 100 yrs old and the longest of its kind built at the time. Book ahead - it’s normally fully booked a few months in advance. Loved it! Recommended.

If you are remotely curious about the tunnels and thought about the tour - then you will not be disappointed. Informative and interesting. You literally get to see all the inner workings. An itch has been well scratched. Excellent VFM

I have no hesitation in recommending this tour. It was very interesting hearing about building the Queensway Mersey Tunnel and even better to see everything up close. We travelled to the top of the ventilation tower and right down to the tunnel level. The two guides were very knowledgeable and entertaining too. The two hours just flew by. Great value for money too.

Been planning to visit the tunnel for a long time and finally got around to it. We were not disappointed. Our guides, John and Phil gave us a real insight into the history, workings and development of the tunnel over the years and even managed to fit in a few jokes. The stairs are a challenge and lifts are available in some parts, but if you are okay with a little sharp exercise, sign up. A great tour of one of the cities iconic landmarks.

What a great couple of hours! If I could give 10 stars I would. Funny and informative guides. An amazing insight into the background, history and workings of the tunnels and the ventilation system. The guides were full of information and open to questions. Make time for this attraction, it's a blast!
