I went to view the new photo gallery.
Throughout the gallery I was astonished to discover that only one single photograph depicting a black face.
I'm aware that much of the exhibition is there showing examples of very early photography no photography in Africa and Europe depicting people with different dark skinned culture is almost exclusively emitted from this exhibition I've never seen an exhibition so white.

A Liverpool gem and it's free to enter. We visited today for the first time - nice, friendly welcome from the front desk. We enjoyed well priced drinks and food from the cafe before venturing upstairs to see some of the beautiful, varied collection. Then it was a look round works from the Liverpool Biennial. Thoroughly enjoyed our time at the architecturally stunning Victoria Gallery and Museum 😁

While awaiting opening time had a coffee in the delightful Café that is at ground level in the gorgeous building.
On the way to the upper Galleries admired a Jacob Epstein sculpture, Third Portrait of Oriel Ross. A number of thematic exhibitions were underway.
First up was an interesting series of Cunard White Star advertising from the 1920s and 30s. Beguiling in their invitations to sail they feature colourful almost packed cases and photo opportunities of arrival in the USA.
A series of Liverpool in the past shows the overhead railway that was demolished in the late 1950s in addition to atmospheric streetscapes.
John James Audubon was a naturalist and artist famous for his mission to complete a record of all American bird species. A selection of his work is the subject of another roomful of displays.
The Art of Ruin and Linda Stein’s Gender Scrambling were engaging. In the latter, Stein portrays in prints well known persons, mostly American, on a spectrum towards their opposite gender. Barack Obama, Gloria Steinem, Virginia Woolf and Margaret Sanger are just some of those featuring.

The Gallery & museum are NOT CLOSED!
Todays visit was superb. A collection Cunard Posters and memorabilia and a collection of brilliant photographs by Ean Flanders. The quality of display of both exhibitions was excellent. The upper floor is closed while roof work is carried out. The cafe / restaurant is open on the ground floor and is very welcoming. A good lunch abd very good coffee. Staff lovely. The building is also worth looking at in detail inside and out.

Hello Howard-Liverpool.
Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment. Indeed, the building is NOT closed and we have edited the line on our description which says that it is. The museum on the second floor is not accessible at the moment as we are having roof work done, but the rest of the building is very much open, as you discovered.
We're glad you enjoyed the Cunard exhibition and the Ean Flanders photography and hope to see you again.

I like visiting museums and historical places so since I was visiting Liverpool I had to drop by to see the artwork. To begin with, the building looks stunning! I found this museum interesting and the artwork was incredible. A lovely cozy café past the entrance and very helpful knowledgeable staff. Overall a nice place to visit in Liverpool.

Great calm atmosphere, very nice staff and a café with delicious (and relatively cheap) offers. During Christmas time even better, with a christmas tree, decorations and some music - gets you in the spirit!

Hello loulV6441SJ
Thank you for taking the time to leave a nice review. We do enjoy Christmas time, we get a real tree every year and it really brings out the Victorian feel.
You must come and see us in the summer if you can, maybe have lunch in the Quadrangle. Despite the building works it is still rather lovely out there!

Hello ursucookie
Thank you for your 5 points and comments, we hope to see you return to see the museum when the roof is fully restored, or to use the café and visit any of our other exciting and frequently changing exhibitions.
We also have free guided tours on a Tuesday at 2pm which allow you access to the second floor to see the original Victorian lecture theatre (if it is not in use by conferences).
