Neighbourhood: Westminster
If you only had an afternoon to experience London on a grand scale, Westminster would be a wise place to start. The ornate Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey sit adjacent at a corner of Parliament Square, and a short stroll along The Mall leads to Buckingham Palace. Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column are just up the road as well. As captivating as the architecture is, the wonders of Mother Nature are highlights of the area too. St James's Park (arguably London's loveliest), the expansive Green Park, and pedestrian friendly tree lined paths along the river showcase the exquisite manicure provided by English gardeners. Just beyond the landmarks and the gorgeous outdoor spaces, quiet residential squares and age old local pubs offer a more subdued take on this global seat of power in the heart of London.

It was from a stroll on the Thames that we observed this military memorial dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Royal Air Force during the First and Second World Wars. This monument is located on the Victoria Embankment (Whitehall Steps) in central London, on the north bank of the River Thames, between the Hungerford railway bridge (Charing Cross station) to the east and Westminster Bridge to the West. Inaugurated in 1923 by the Prince of Wales (later Edward VIII), this memorial comprises a tapered Portland stone pylon surmounted by a globe bearing a golden eagle with its wings raised (RAF insignia), the work of the Scottish sculptor Sir William Reid Dick (1878-1961). Inscription: “I carried you on eagle’s wings and brought you to myself” (Exodus 19:4). Monument listed as heritage in 1958 and restored in 2018.

A gold coloured eagle surmounting a plinth in honour of the airmen of the Royal Air Force. Could not be more apt.

Victoria embankment opposite to the London Eye, you can discover the Royal Air Force memorial, per ardua as astra, a few minutes to admire the golden eagle.

Whilst enjoying a late-afternoon walk along the Victoria Embankment, we came across a number of significant war memorials.
One of the memorials which caught our attention because of its size and location was the Royal Air Force Memorial. This memorial is sited adjacent to the wall along the water’s edge almost directly across the River Thames from the London Eye. There is a boat landing located on the river side of the memorial.
The memorial commemorates the service and sacrifices of British airmen during World War One. The structure of the memorial consists of an inscribed tall stone plinth with a gilded eagle sitting atop it.
This is not necessarily a “must-see” memorial but if you happen to be passing by, it is certainly worthy of a few moments of your time!

The RAF memorial is a 1923 military memorial on the Victoria Embankment in London and overlooks the River Thames. It commemorates those who gave their lives fighting for us in the Royal Air Force in the first world war. It was designed by William Dick and became grade II listed in 1958.

As a child, I always loved the Gold Eagle on the top of this riverside memorial. Decades on, it was great to see it again during my stroll along the Victoria Embankment. What I didn't realise is that it is a memorial to World War 1 members of, mainly, the Royal Flying Corps (part of the Army) and the Royal Naval Air Service. It wasn't until 1st April 1918 that these two Corps were amalgamated to form the RAF.
Nonetheless, it is worth looking at - and it is also worth seeking out two more memorials very nearby, to the Fleet Air Arm and to the Battle of Britain.

Between so many war memorials in the city, this is one of my favorites. Dedicated to the casualties of the Royal Air Force in World War I, it was built in 1923, made of stone, with the gilded eagle on top of a globe with a motto of the RAF “Per ardua ad astra” which means “Through adversity to the stars”, inscripted in the monument.

A beautiful monument, but not one out of the ordinary. It's not something you can't miss. If you are passing through the area, you can stop for 5 minutes for a photo or two, but no more.

The Royal Air Force Memorial is a military memorial on the Victoria Embankment. Take a long walk from Waterloo Bridge to Big Ben and and you can feel history!

I saw the memorial recently and wondered why the quote has not been corrected, as surely the use of bare instead bore must have been pointed out before now?!
'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to myself.'
