The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Westminster
If you only had an afternoon to experience London on a grand scale, Westminster would be a wise place to start. The ornate Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey sit adjacent at a corner of Parliament Square, and a short stroll along The Mall leads to Buckingham Palace. Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column are just up the road as well. As captivating as the architecture is, the wonders of Mother Nature are highlights of the area too. St James's Park (arguably London's loveliest), the expansive Green Park, and pedestrian friendly tree lined paths along the river showcase the exquisite manicure provided by English gardeners. Just beyond the landmarks and the gorgeous outdoor spaces, quiet residential squares and age old local pubs offer a more subdued take on this global seat of power in the heart of London.

PROS
* Nice statue and good likeness
* A popular one among the number of ones in Parliament Square
CONS
Nothing descriptive of the person or why his image is there
"I VISITED THIS PLACE"...
... as I was wandering through Parliament Square, with the intention to see and photograph all the statues.
This one garnered the attention of other individual visitors, who wanted their photo taken there (see my few "helpful" photos).
WAS IT WORTH THE COST?
It is free
WOULD I VISIT THE PLACE AGAIN?
Yes- when I return to Parliament Square, I will go and see it again
ADVICE
It is opposite the side entrance to Westminster Abbey and near the Abraham Lincoln one, which itself is across the street from the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and also worth visiting.

We were visiting Westminster on a Sunday, during our most recent stay in London. As we emerged from the Westminster tube station, we were astounded by the large crowds present in the area.
The only part of this general area that was not so crowded was the small Parliament Square. Consequently, we wandered over there to take in the views of Westminster Abbey from that position. While we were there, we also had a good look at the various statues scattered around the square.
One of the statues which particularly caught our attention was the portrayal of Nelson Mandela cast in bronze and standing on a low stone plinth. Being a modern statue, it has a different style to it compared to some of the other statues located in the square. Perhaps the fact that Mandela was a contemporary figure who we were familiar with from newspapers and television made the statue seem a bit more life-like.
This splendid statue is certainly worthy of your attention, should you find yourself in Parliament Square, London.

A stunning statue of Nelson Mandela perfectly located at Parliament Square, this South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader & philanthropist became the first black President from 1994-1999 after formerly serving 27 years in jail, 18 of which were served in the brutal Robben Island Prison just off the coast of Cape Town, in 1982 he was moved to Pollsmoor Prison on the mainland & eventually he was placed under house arrest in 1988 until his release on February 11th 1990, a very brave man who achieved so much in his very long life right up until his sad death on December 5th 2013.

This is a statue of the great leader of the world, Nelson Mandela. The statue is located in the Westminister area, right opposite the parliament and within walking distance to London Eye and to Trafalgar Square. It is located in a square where there are statues of many great leaders of the world. Definitely visit this place to admire statues of other great leaders too. The Nelson Mandela statue has great work done on it. Lovely statue.

This touching tribute to the legend that is Nelson Mandela is situated in Parliament square opposite Westminster abbey and shares the square with the likes of Winston Churchill and Mahatma Gandhi. The statue is smaller than I expected, especially comparing it to the bulk of Winston Churchill but it's still worth a visit.

He stands in Parliament Square in the company of other world leaders, who, like him, had a major impact on their generation, and those that followed.

There are a number of statues on Parliament Square and one of them is Nelson Mandela. He was in jail in South Africa for a number of years and was jailed for standing up against the government who enforced apartheid.
Thankfully he was released and went on to bring about great change in his country and hopefully around the world.
Hopefully his actions will have a lasting impact on people and seeing this monument will inspire the future generation.

Opposite Big Ben I the square so why not take the photo opportunity. Another opportunity to explain to my grandchildren his role in African history. My friend met him at an airport in Australia and said he was such a humble man
