About
Welcome to our escape rooms in east London! We’re located in the Broadway Market area in Hackney. We are known to be one of the best escape room destinations in London and we are also among the most reasonably priced at £24 per person. We are serious about originality so we make all our games ourselves. To stay original we add unique elements to every game that you won’t find elsewhere. We also pride ourselves on our independence, not being part of an international chain. We know that every visit to our escape rooms is special so we do our best to make sure you feel that from the time you enter our unit to the time you leave. We also prize narrative in our escape rooms as we believe this adds so much to the excitement. Our games are all part of the same story, although it doesn’t matter which order you play them in. Your safety is the most important part of your time at our escape rooms. We are certicated COVID19 safe but don’t allow this to compromise on fun.

We did this escape room with another couple during a trip to London. We really enjoy doing this as the host jumped straight into character and started telling us the story, adding health and safety etc into the story rather than going through this at the beginning as a formality. The room its self was very engaging and interactive, something for everyone to be working on and we had a great time.

Me and my friend went and did the oracle escape room, it was very creative and the story line was perfect. Overall we enjoyed it so so much and will definitely go back to try another one again.

Went to Hackney for a 13th birthday party with 5 and did the Hypersomnia Room. Everyone had a superb time, the difficulty level was perfectly pitched, it was just scary enough to induce panic in the kids, the hints (when we needed them) were delivered cleverly and the personalisation was great.

Left with 5 happy teens and as a bonus I had an excellent time too. Thanks Modern Fables!

Our startup wanted to host a fun activity for our team and we happened across Modern Fables. They put on a wonderful two escape rooms that we found to be extremely well done. The Modern Fable game hosts did a great job staying in character, and we found the rooms to be both challenging and engaging. Great place to go with a small group of friends or colleagues!

Excellent family fun! Went for a family afternoon out and was completely dazzled by the escape room. Was the right level of difficulty for our family (Kids 15, 11) with a great back story to the puzzle. We went in The Oracles room. It was great challenge and managed to tax our brains, really working our lateral thinking. There were several different puzzles to solve (after told it was the hardest room!) which all came together to solve the main mystery. Great experience and we managed to escape in good time! Well organised, excellent puzzles and great fun. Well recommended.

Absolutely brilliant, immersive escape room. Loved the story telling, loved the twisty puzzles, great staff, really memorable evening. Family of 5 with kids aged 11-16. We did the Oracle room, and it was perfect, tricky but not scary.

This is a well thought out, well planned experience. We were treated to an atmospheric immersive experience. A good time was had by all. Not that easy to get to, however the way it was explained in the booking email, which bus, tube etc, directions were easy to follow.
We all had a fantastic day and would highly recommend. Definitely going to book again for the other rooms which there are several.

Weirdest building I’ve been to for an escape game but it fit the vibe for the story we were about to solve. The start of the game was really immersive from the unusual entry to the games unit and the in-character bartender appearing. The game itself was quite basic and relied heavily on simple world play riddles which was disappointing but would still be good fun for new teams. It would have been good to see a greater variety of puzzle styles in the game and more multistep puzzles. The story was good and immersive but the ending felt quite abrupt as if there was another room yet to come. The main issue we had was with security as belongings are transported by the games master without you knowing meaning some of our things had been left in another room without them realising. We also had to pay for an additional member of the team on the night and their card reader wasn’t working properly so asked if we could pay by typing in bank details and clicking charge. This wouldn’t normally be an issue and we were of course understanding, but this didn’t work either and the GM wanted us to leave the facility with the card details still written on the payment platform! He didn’t seem to realise a huge security risk here. Once we insisted it was sorted in front of us everything fine but there wasn’t much of an apology either. Not great first impressions for a company with huge potential.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. My name is Jay and I am the Director of Modern Fables. As a small independent company, all feedback - good and bad - is very valuable as it lets us know what we’re doing right and also how we might improve what we do. The enjoyment and security of our players is paramount. We have two very serious issues here: The quality of our game The Escapist and security procedures. I’ll address these below in the order you set them out and explain how we will move forward as an organisation. I’m so sorry to hear you thought The Escapist was disappointing. This was the first Modern Fables game, and is still our most popular after all these years. We do get a lot of comments from experienced and less experienced players alike that it ranks among their most favourite escape rooms. However, the nature of anything creative is that some people will inevitably not like it as much. It does pain us that this happens because all our games have so much of our love and effort poured in to them but we’d never be so bold to discount negative opinions! What we can do though is explain why we made certain design decisions so you can get a sense of why we do what we do. I would hate for people to think we are lazy in our process or design! A lot of players do comment that they like the mix of puzzles in The Escapist. As you mention though, it does feature more wordplay and riddles compared to other games. This is actually due to careful design decisions rather than us relying on a certain type of puzzle for ease or economy. We think carefully about what kinds of puzzles would create the overall ambience we are looking for in our games rather than shoe-horning puzzles in that don’t fit. The Escapist is designed to feel investigative and story-like and this influenced the choice of puzzles. The vast majority of teams need the full hour to play The Escapist with some very experienced players (100, 150, 200+ games) taking around 45 - 60 minutes. So, wordplay isn’t simple for everyone and through all the comments we’ve had over the years, we don’t feel it detracts from the depth of the game. In terms of the ending feeling abrupt, we’ve taken our cue from the writer HP Lovecraft here (who is the main influence for The Escapist). Without giving out spoilers, the story is resolved but it is also open-ended to allow the players’ imaginations to fill in the gaps. Of course, none of this detracts from or negates your opinion on The Escapist. Your comments are actually very valuable to us as if we get more such opinions we’ll know we need to update the game. Thanks for your contribution to the hive mind! Last but far from least are your security concerns. We take security of your personal details and possessions very seriously indeed - as if they were our own (I find this great motivation to practice great security). In terms of players’ possessions, each game has a trolley to keep your coats and bags on and our staff will invite players to keep their belongings here. We move this trolley from the start of your game to our debrief room to give you a smoother experience and to make sure everything runs on time. On this occasion, unfortunately an item was not left on the trolley so it did get left behind during this transition. No other members of the public would have gained access to this space so your item would have been safe but I can see how worrying this could be! To combat this happening again we are implementing two changes. Firstly, we have purchased a lock-box for each trolley so players can feel confident their high-value belongings are safe. These boxes will be big enough for each player to leave a laptop plus other smaller items. We’ll have a master key to these boxes but the players will have their own key so they can lock and unlock it for themselves. We’ll also be clearer about what happens to the trolley while you are in your game. And to clarify, only our staff come into contact with or have access to your trolley. Thank you for being understanding with the card-reader issues. Technology is great when it works! Fortunately, it works most of the time! On this occasion, we had a mix of bad luck with our technology and poor training on what to do in such situations. Your Games Master was new to their role, and it falls to me as Director to make sure they are properly trained to accomplish their tasks to the highest standard. A mix of being busier than expected once we reopened after lockdown and having to find and train new staff led to this mistake. After talking to your Games Master, it seems they were conscious of making you wait around too long after the delays you had already experienced and this led them to become flustered. They then choose the wrong course of action and actually intended for you to feel comfortable with this. Of course, this action was incorrect in terms of security, and also didn’t manage to speed up your delay or make you feel comfortable whatsoever! I am deeply sorry this has happened, and your Games Master also asked me to convey their regret and apology. This is a big mistake and is mortifying for me as Director and owner of the company. The buck stops with me and I will make sure this never happens again. To achieve this we’ll be revisiting all training relating to security in all it’s forms. And as I see customer service as one of the main factors that helps us stand apart from the rest, I will be revisiting and improving upon our training. We recognise we are a small company in a competitive industry located in an ultra-competitive city with those much more well-funded than ourselves. Therefore, the only way we can survive is the quality and professionalism of our work and how emotionally invested we are in it. I hope this understanding goes towards resolving any reservations potential customers have about joining us on our journey. I also hope that the author of the above review accepts our since apologies and understands we never want this to happen again! Keep having fun, and stay safe! Jay

Really fun experience. Went with a friend and enjoyed going through multiple rooms. Really engaging and I liked the aspect of solving the riddles in near darkness

Thanks for leaving us a review! I'm so glad you enjoyed your visit! One of our games is a little dark as it fits the atmosphere, but anyone concerned by this should note we have lots of torches!

The escape room was very fun and atmospheric, we all really enjoyed it. The staff were super helpful as well and guided us whenever we got lost. I’d love to do the other rooms there.
