Top ways to experience York Watergate and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Trafalgar Square / Embankment
With its iconic Nelson’s Column, majestic oversized lions and brightly-lit fountains, Trafalgar Square is not just considered the heart of this bustling London hub, but the very core of the city itself. Beyond this esteemed gathering place are more famous icons, as well as a disproportionate numbers of the city’s most popular cultural attractions including the National Gallery and many West End theaters. Along the way to these major sites are quiet lanes and antiquated pubs to discover, as well as riverside vistas to enjoy on the embankment. With a calendar full of celebratory events, any time of year is a fine time to visit.

Don’t go out your way to see but interesting if in the area. Amazing to think this marked the boundary to the north bank of the terms before the embankment was created. Amazing how wide the Thames was in central London and explains the old artistic impressions a lot better now. Thames really has been shrunk in central to make it more manageable. The gate itself feels a bit unremarkable.

This is an interesting monument with a garden in the front area. All based in Victoria Embankment Gardens and worth a visit. Nice flowers around it

York Watergate, marooned at the north western end of Victoria Embankment Gardens, is situated in London and takes its name from the long since disappeared York House, owned by Charles I’s favourite the Duke of Buckingham. It dates from around 1626 and is a sort of grand parking space for his private boat. Its location shows how far the tidal Thames could roam before the construction of Victoria Embankment in the 1870s. It has served nothing other than an ornamental purpose for nearly 400 years and its stone pillars were derided in the nineteenth century as resembling the legs of shaved poodles.

The Embankment along the River Thames was created to the designs of the engineer Sir James Bazelgette in the 1860's and the York Watergate is a reminder of where the original river bank was - you can see what a major transformation the new embankment achieved.

The Watergate itself was originally the gateway from the river to York House, being commissioned by the Duke of Buckingham in 1626.
