About
St James Garlickhythe is known as Wren's Lantern because of the beauty of the light. It was built after the Great Fire of London and has the highest nave ceiling of any Wren City church. It boasts many original features and is a living Christian presence in the heart of the City. It is also 'home' to the ghost of Dick Whittington's cat and mummified body, known as Jimmy Garlick!

Neighbourhood: City of London
From its ancient past as a Roman trading outpost to its 21st century status as the wealthiest square mile in the world, the financial district known simply as “The City” is one of London's most historic and fascinating neighbourhoods. Here high rise office towers such as Norman Foster’s Gherkin mingle with Roman ruins and architectural marvels from virtually every era in between, including Christopher Wren's glorious St.Paul's Cathedral, and John Soane's dauntingly classicist Bank of England. This neighbourhood is also home to some of the finest restaurants and plushest hotels in Europe, in addition to an assortment of of watering holes, upscale shops, and Tube stations. During the week, the City is abuzz with white collar workers going about their business; the weekend sees this area turn into a quiet haven for sightseers.

Louise V's review totally failed to appreciate a beautiful Wren church in the heart of the City. She also appears to have no compassion for the homeless. I have worshipped here for more than 40 years and can recommend our prayer book service and wonderful music and choir.

Although a church has probably stood on this site since late Saxon times the present structure is substantially that of a church Wren designed to replace the one destroyed in the 1666 Fire of London. Although it re-opened in 1682 the tower was not completed until 1717. Amongst its notable features is its 40 foot high ceiling something it shares only with St. Paul’s and separate chancel. The tower clock destroyed in the Blitz was restored as recently as 1988. I remember nicotine it several years ago for a free lunchtime concert as part of the City of London Music Festival. Sad that the festival since became defunct.

This is simply an amazing church and the vicar and all his staff are amazing, nothing seems too much trouble for them. I would definitely suggest you go to a Sunday Service at 10-30am as it is very calming and the Sermon is fantastic, and after you get tea, coffee and if lucky a glass of wine what more could you want.

I am able to visit London 3 or 4 times a year, and always try to attend a service at this beautiful Wren church. One of the few City churches with a Sunday service, it is always welcoming and comfortable. I am always asked to stay afterward for a coffee. It is a short walk from the Globe Theater, across Southwark Bridge, with a view of its distinctive steeple, and you will often hear their magnificent bells.

The Vintners company held the installation service for 524th Master on 11 July 2018.

The church & the service was thought provoking & simulating. Congratulations to everybody who helps to keep St JGH looking and feeling so special. If you have not visited the church its a real gem.

The rough sleeper outside the church is an ex member of the armed forces, Fr Tim has done much to help keep him safe.

Father Tim Handley and his predecessors have helped make this wonderful Church spiritual home to The Worshipful Company of Skinners since the 17th Century. It is a beautiful place to worship and truly valued by all our community. It is on the doorstep of our nearby Hall on Dowgate Hill, where the Guild has been for 700 years. The Company is a philanthropic organisation, and our aims which include education, support to those in need and the elderly, chime with those of the Church hence above our gates you will read 'To God only be the glory'. The Clerk.

This is a nice little church, rather warm on a summer evening with the doors closed (I was there for a concert on Sat pm and it was baking). There are quite a few beggars in the area and on the bench directly opposite the church, which I imagine tourists would find off putting and potential other visitors too..It is an obscure location (off the beaten track) so i can't imagine there are huge numbers of visitors here..
