Top ways to experience Charles De Gaulle Statue and nearby attractions

The area
Address
Neighbourhood: St. James's
Perennially fashionable since the days of Henry VIII, the aristocratic “Clubland” of St James's is a premier destination for high end craft and bespoke design. Here you’ll lose count of the Royal Warrants (which indicate that the Royal Family patronizes the establishment) seen in shop front windows, even during a short stroll to bordering Green Park or St James’s Park. With the brightly lit and constantly buzzing junction of Piccadilly Circus at its northeast corner and none of Central London too far away, this is an surprisingly central and accessible part of town, especially given its prosperous demeanor.
How to get there
  • Piccadilly Circus • 7 min walk
  • Charing Cross • 7 min walk

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

An extremely arrogant Frenchman, Charles De Gaulle was the kind of person who thinks another country spilling the blood of their countrymen to liberate his country from Nazi occupation and oppression was an insulting to France and an act of betrayal of the West.

A redeeming quality was that he ferociously opposed a supranational Europe instead favouring a Europe of Sovereign Nation States.

Unveiled in 1993 by The Queen Mother this statute sits quietly on the side of Curzon Street. Recommended

This statue stands in tribute to Charles de Gaulle, the leader of the Free French and French Resistance, as well as the first president of the French Fifth Republic. This statue is located opposite the building used as the headquarters of the Free French Forces in London, during the Second World War.

The statue is life-sized and stands on top of a plinth that is equal in height. The statue depicts de Gaulle standing defiantly in his Brigadier General uniform. His left had is lower, with the palm curiously raised, almost as though in supplication.
