Many tour providers offer their services for a calming tour on Thames. The guide in our boat was funny and gave some nice insights on the architectural highlights along the river. Experience it early or late to avoid the masses. In afternoon heat, we had to queue for nearly one hour to get on board (which was really annoying).

The trip takes over 3 hours but it is a lovely trip down the river. Once you reach about Richmond the views from the river are outstanding. There was a good commentary on the boat. You could choose to sit inside or out. Good toilets on boat. There was food and a bar. It was a most enjoyable stress free... More

Relaxing and interesting ride up to Hampton Court on the upper open deck of the Cockney Sparrow. Truly interesting and funny "guide" who pointed out sights and thoroughly entertained the passengers. Best to do on a glorious sunny day, but a wonderful day out starting at the West Embankment and Big Ben. Treat yourself to lunch or dinner at Mezzet... More

While all the other tourist boats were heading east to Woolrich, I took a boat to Hampton Court. It was three hours, two and a half hours back to Westminster. I had been really burned out from walking and museums, and this was just a perfect trip. The river gets narrower, and the boathouses and homes and locks and wildlife... More

We used this boat to get to the Shard for afternoon tea. Despite being a Londoner for 14 years I'd never used a river boat but my Mum was visiting and wanted to try . We asked the attendant to guide us into a boat that would stop at London Bridge City Pier so we could exit and the Shard... More

We went on this boat trip from Hampton Court to Westminster and it was a very good way to spend three hours on a somewhat bleak day. The crew were friendly and interesting and the view was spectacular, all the way.

Took the boat up to Kew Gardens- a very lovely ride. However, the commentary included every power station and rubbish disposal detail along the way. Got tired of hearing about it... find a few new interesting tidbits, please Sir.

Ended up in Greenwich with my little one (the other kids didn't come with me that day) I decided it would be nice to go up the river as the little fella had never been & I haven't been on the Thames for 30 years. Really enjoyable & informative. Absolutely fantastic slightly irreverent commentary by a ginger bearded chap (didn't... More

Staying in Westminster

Neighbourhood Profile
Westminster
If you only had an afternoon to experience London on a grand scale, Westminster would be a wise place to start. The ornate Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey sit adjacent at a corner of Parliament Square, and a short stroll along The Mall leads to Buckingham Palace. Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column are just up the road as well. As captivating as the architecture is, the wonders of Mother Nature are highlights of the area too. St James's Park (arguably London's loveliest), the expansive Green Park, and pedestrian friendly tree lined paths along the river showcase the exquisite manicure provided by English gardeners. Just beyond the landmarks and the gorgeous outdoor spaces, quiet residential squares and age old local pubs offer a more subdued take on this global seat of power in the heart of London.
