Neighbourhood: Soho
The go-to district for a good time in London, Soho hosts a wealth of world-class theatres and a compelling lineup of cafes, restaurants, pubs, bars, and clubs. At Soho's core is London's original Red Light District and the epicenter of the LGBT scene – and thus the city's hottest nightlife. For shopping enthusiasts, Soho is not only the home of London's greatest concentration of boutique shops, but also the most strategic place to set off on a tour of the world's most celebrated department stores. In the southern part of the neighbourhood lies Chinatown, with its multitude of delicious and affordable restaurants. Closer to the Thames, Chinatown's narrow and teeming lantern-lit lanes spill onto the expansive hub of glitzy Leicester Square.

    Excellent
Here to see Les Miserables for the first time which was excellent. Great sad story. Found the bar service to be very efficient and the prices not too bad for a theatre in London. And whilst others have mentioned poor leg room my 6’1” carcass fitted in fine.

    A First for Me
As a birthday treat, I booked a couple of tickets to see Les Misérables and was not disappointed. The performance was fantastic, the theatre and all its staff wonderful. It was my first visit but I can understand why people return over and over again. This could well have converted me into being a theatre goer.

    Great Theatre
Great historic theatre, we were in the front row of the dress circle , amazing views of the stage , seats were very comfortable and quite large , very modern and very clean toilets. The theatre is an incredible piece of architecture with lots of original features and beautiful lights. Went to see Les Miserables which was brilliants and well suited to its setting.

    ABSOLUTELY SUPERB - faultless
Having not seen Les Mis since 1986 (!) I took my 15 year old grand daughter for her first time as a Christmas present. Well, what an experience for both of us. The performance (Saturday matinee in December 2023) was ABSOLUTELY SUPERB. We were both totally "wowed" by the cast, particularly Brad Barnley playing Jean Valjean in his West End debut - definitely one to watch out for the future!!! The set and staging, the cast and their singing and acting, the music and songs, the musicians and sound - all faultless. The theatre (Sondhiem) was a lovely setting, and had a very good view from seats E23 and E24 in the Stalls. Worth the cost. There were even sufficient ladies toilets dotted around!!!

Waited to see the show for years. Not dissapointed. Wonderful
Wonderful show. Quaint theatre , quite small and intimate. Toilets right next to stalls ( we were in row J) They sold ice cream in the interval Speedy entrance, waited only 5 minutes in the queue.

    Good seats but drafty
Les Miserables was absolutely brilliant. We had been given the seats C1 & 2 withrestricted viewin the dress circle. To be honest it didn't deter anything from the show BUT there is a dreadful draft from the doors which makes it a little uncomfortable.

Superb evening with real stars, shame about the water.
Lovely old theatre. Visited to see Les Miserables. It was a fantastic show, brilliant acting, singing, scenery and effects. The staff were friendly and very helpful. The one downer, was that I wasn't feeling well and asked for a glass of tap water for tablets, they said , "we don't have tap water." I had to buy a can of still water for £2.00. They have duty to provide tap water for free. Isn't there a single tap in the theatre?

    Amazing Production, very powerful.
Wonderful performance, very powerful really enjoyed every moment. The set and lighting was amazing. I have slight mobility issues and from the second I walked in the door the front of house staff were brilliant. Thanks go to Rosie who took us to our seats and explained where everything was. The staff were all there at the interval to help me again. There were long queues for the toilets, but in an old Theatre what can you expect.

    Les mis
Last treat of our London trip and was very impressed with the musical. Top notch. Only disappointment was that somebody was filming the show two rows ahead and it was very off putting. Anyways quick word with the staff sorted that at the intermission.! Go if you can and bugger the expense!

Went to see Les Miserable last night. It’s a wonderful show and I have seen in a number of times. So, naturally we were really looking forward to seeing it here in London I. The new refurbished Sondheim Theatre. Tickets were medium range for this show at £88, not the cheapest tickets in the house by any stretch. In the first half a lady in front of us periodically checked her phone which was annoying. Then in the second half she was CONSTANTLY checking her phone. The ushers did NOTHING even though this was annoying a number of people. After the show I asked why the usher didn’t do anything about it and was told “don’t worry about it sir”. Pathetic!!! Ruined a great show. For future reference, if you have ushers, get them to do their job and the patronising after the show made me even more annoyed!

OK.

Theatre as a venue first. I use a wheelchair. Entrance is way round the side from the front. Then long and winding passageway. The foyer is post war glass & steel after being hit by a bomb. Inside it’s classical Edwardian.

The show. Les Miserables. I’ve seen it about a dozen times in the original West End, Broadway and touring versions, about a dozen times over the years.

First time with this restaging.

First, it’s a small theatre. The music and singing is over miked and over amplified. Metallic sound. Not good. The band shouldn’t need amplifying. The theatre has good acoustics.

Second, as the stage is significantly smaller the revolve has been eliminated. I liked the revolve in earlier productions. But theatre stage techniques change, many changes, especially the projection and lighting were amazing.

Gavroche can’t be seen picking up bullets on the wrong side of the barricades. His death has much less impact in this version.

The death scene of Jean Valjean’s nemesis, Javier, isn’t as well done either. The hypnotic lighting and spiral effect of the original was much better.

Finally, my access was facilitated by “Jenny”, an over enthusiastic and effusive American. She needs to learn that less is more. I dreaded her coming to chat to me.

This is the third time I have seen Les Mis and it didn't disappoint! I previously saw it as its original home in the West End, in Michigan USA and now at the Sondheim Theatre.

However, I have rated my experience as average because the theatre, facilities and policies let it down greatly.

Firstly, I have never been to any theatre anywhere in the world with such small toilets. Both gentleman's toilets were so small it was unbelievable. My sons and I mostly used the one directly outside the entrance to the stalls and it's like a shoebox. Even with masks on it felt uncomfortable.

The Sondheim also has a baffling booster seat policy with regards to Row A. My 9yo sat in seat A22 and we requested a booster seat as his eye line was below the edge of the stage. We were told it was completely against policy to give anyone regardless of height a booster seat in Row A. This is also the only theatre I've been to where booster seats are hidden away out of sight.

We asked to speak to the Theatre Manager and she reluctantly brought us a booster seat to see how high my youngest would be whilst sitting on it. When it became obvious that he would be no higher than an adult she relented although she did request that he swap to A21 as there was another child behind him. Why she couldn't have offered that child a booster seat too is anyone's guess.

When we asked, "if were a family of six foot tall individuals would we be moved from Row A?", the Manager said "no, of course not". This just makes the whole policy so stupid as my 9yo on a seat was lower than any tall adult.

I don't know why the Sondheim has this policy as we saw Mary Poppins recently and it doesn't exist there. I suspect children aren't really welcome at Les Mis.

Les Mis is billed as being suitable for 7+ (same as Mary Poppins) but I would very much disagree. I hadn't seem a production in many years so a lot of the content had slipped my mind but I think the first act especially should be 10+. The excellent film version is PG-13! Of course anything unsuitable is mostly implied and will go over the heads of young children. Parents beware on all counts.

25/8/21 my first visit to this theatre & my first visit to a theatre since the pandemic. Booking for Les Miserables online was nice & easy but I don't know if it was my excitement or the pure brilliance of the theatre staff. All the staff from front line door staff, ushers & bar staff were excellent, happy, helpful & made my experience one to remember.
As for the Les Miserables concert show I think a standing ovation & tears says it all 10 out of 10 in anyone's books.

VERY uncomfortable seats but a good performance generally. It was a shame that the young Eponine who started off as a white child turned into a black one in later life (who carried a very obvious african timbre to her rendition of the much loved songs that Eponine sings) - continuity? At least Cosette remained the same colour. Either you start off black and remain black or you start off white and.........
Fantine was a little "too well fed" to be the fighting to keep her daughter looked after.

Visited here with my mum. A girl who worked at the theatre saw my mum had a walking stick, she came over to the taxi and escorted my mum and me to our seats ( i forgot her name). Made sure she was ok, in the interval she made sure she was ok and at the end of the performance escorted us out too. My mum was grateful as there was quite a lot of stairs to manage. We would just like to thank her v much and to the general efficiency of the staff 👌. Les miserables, my third time seeing it and won't be my last. Brilliant, cast excellent 🙂.

We went to watch Les Misérables for my birthday treat.
My husband had booked the side box.
The theatre itself is lovely, clean and tidy.
The show was out of this world and would highly recommend if you’re a fan.
The side box is very comfy, as you have chairs you can move around and have plenty of leg room.
The downside is, although you get full view of the stage, you will be watching the show from the side, so although these tickets are dearer, and you do get privacy, and easy access to the bar and toilets, I would personally would prefer to watch them from the front.

I've always wanted to see this show and I'm so pleased I did, The show was superb, everything from the music to the acting was amazing, we laughed and had tears in our eyes. I can't express how good it was. I would recommend anyone going to see it.

The rest of my review is about our experience from a wheelchair users eye.

The accessible team at the theatre are amazing, so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Booking the Accessible seating was very easy as the lady talked us through what we needed to do.

Arrived at the theatre and made ourselves known to the security at the main door. Can't remember the ladies name but she was ready waiting for us.

Once she checked our tickets she walked with us round to the wheelchair entrance and showed us to our seats (my wife can transfer from her power chair to an aisle seat).
My wife's power chair was taken away (I'm guessing due to fire safety reasons and being next to the emergency exit) but if she needed it back for any reason it would've been brought back to her even if it was during the performance.

As soon as the interval arrived, my wife's chair was brought to her so she could use the facilities which she staff escorted her to and from, she said the facilities were spacious and very clean.

When the show was over again, her chair was brought straight to her and we was shown the way out, at no point during our visit was we made to feel rushed.

We will definitely be going back soon.

The Good. There was arrival times to allow for Covid-19 vaccine check and bag search so there was no excessive queue to get in. Drinks had been pre-ordered and were ready for us and the bar appeared to be managing the normal orders fine without long waits. Staff were polite and helpful. As to the Les Miserables show, fantastic, my wife and I have done a few shows and this was the best one we have been to, great performances by the cast and orchestra.
The Bad. Seating is tight for anyone over 6ft tall, thankfully there was an intermission so I could stand and stretch my legs. Icecream was being sold in the break but there appeared to be issues with the wireless payment so large queues formed with staff eventually sorting the issue.
