The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Clerkenwell
Owing to its proximity to Smithfield Market – the site of an ancient meat market which remains in operation today – Clerkenwell boasts a plethora of globally renowned restaurants, fabulous local eateries, and some of London's favorite pubs. This isn't merely a focal point for all things foodie though. Spend enough time wondering through the area's maze of streets and you might become accustomed to the litany of slinky models passing between Clerkenwell's handful of fashion houses. Far outnumbering the models are craftspeople and designers, many of them are more than happy to welcome visitors into their studios and showrooms.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This ancient water well gives its name to the entire district around it, Clerkenwell. It was originally the principal water source for the nunnery of St Mary's, which was extablished here in the 12th century. It was also the focus for plays and performances with Biblical themes given by local parish clerks in mediaeval times. It was lost for centuries until it was accidentally uncovered by workman in 1924 and is now preserved within a modern office building. It can be viewed by arrangement with the building's occupiers, but even when the building is closed there are interesting displays and information boards which can be viewed through the window. This is an important part of the history of not just the district but also the early develoipment of the City of London.
