We saw a family show at Thanksgiving, Peter Pan, and it was thoroughly enjoyable for our family of five of all ages. The acting is the best in the world, and the theaters here are small enough and well designed that just about every seat is excellent. The staff are so friendly that when they noticed that we had paid... More

An excellent show in a great venue The venue is accessible and well laid out with good and helpful staff and the view from the majority of the seats is excellent. the toilets were clean and, for once, there were no queues. The show itself was fantastic - really moving with some great acting and singing along with some interesting... More

Yes it's a musical about cancer, sounds weird but it works. Great characters, very talented actors and amazing singing voices. I loved it. I took my teenage daughter as a school project and really enjoyed it myself. Anyone who has known someone with cancer will empathise with the characters and relate to the stories. Moving and emotional at times but... More

I visited the National Theatre to see The Red Barn play. It is nicely located in the Southbank of London. There are so many outdoor attractions arounf the theatre that anyone can enjoy. The building is not attractive architecturally but well maintained. It is very easy to get in and out. The play required high level of stage technology that... More

Not the prettiest building in London, but we came to see The Red Barn. Mark Strong is amazing in everything he does, but in this play the 'star' is the staging, I've never seen such a clever set in all my life. Strong cast and a simple story told in stunning visuals. Get a ticket if you can.

Eating at venues that are not primarily restaurants van be a little disappointing, but House Restaurant within the National should be a destination in its own right. We arrived for lunch and within a few seconds were seated and offered drinks by our server, Sarah, who knew the menu, the wine list and the in's and out's of the theatre.... More

We saw The Red Barn in The Lyttleton at the National. We ate in the Kitchen Cafe'. As usual, there was insufficient seating, but the (pretty ordinary) food was served promptly. One of the great things about the National is its car park - right on site, easily accessible and cheap (£8). No need for a coat: drive in; up... More

I love the National, having visiting a ridiculous number of times over the years, so just accept that this is going to be a good review. This time I was there with my wife to see The Red Barn. A trip to the theatre is always a better when you can leave the teenagers at home... Mark Strong and Elizabeth... More

Robert Icke's staging and casting of David Hare's The Red Barn was excruciating to watch. Had there been an intermission, I would have left. Please do not tout anyone as a "wunderkind" when they are selling the Emperor's new clothes.

The plot is delicately unravelled, yet visually so powerful. The whole production is a mastery of imagery – visually and audibly - with fine attention to detail which both captivates and adds to the subtle disquiet of the audience. Lucid final scenes ensure the denouement is satisfying complete. Superb.

Staying in Southbank

Neighbourhood Profile
Southbank
Big time attractions such as the London Eye and a thriving theatre scene (compliments of the National Theatre and the Young Vic) are but a few of the reasons that Southbank is such a collectively cherished part of town. With plenty of family friendly activities and venues lined up along a pedestrianized river bank between Westminster Bridge and Waterloo Bridge, visitors can always expect a casual and festive atmosphere. On top of all the fun stuff to do at Southbank is the opportunity to simply sit back and admire photo-op views of iconic landmarks like Parliament and St Paul's Cathedral, just on across the Thames.
