Have you ever walked through the streets of a city and wondered what that place could have looked and felt like years, centuries before you were born? Have you ever felt like trying to patch together images and descriptions, from books and movies, to live the atmosphere of place but not quite succeeding? When visiting a place, it's the images, memories, stories and emotions you experience that will make that place special and unique to you like to nobody else.
Jack has the gift of making the same place visited by millions of people, unique to you.
One summer afternoon, he took us on a tour of Bloomsbury bringing to life stories and characters for us through his incredible knowledge, humour and storytelling. Jack was able to make me see a neighbourhood I have known for years in an entirely new light.
He could make us see famous writers and historians discussing their views in one of the "key gardens", architects discussing plans next to the UCL site, traders walking down Lamb's Conduit, actors rehearsing scenes in front of some of the Georgian townhouses in the area.
I have been on many guided tours and read guide books in my life. They all offer the same information, the same pre-set "spiel". With Jack, it's different. He got us under the spell of his storytelling, flowing from a question to the next in a natural conversation. (So much so, we attracted a few "followers" on our tour that enquired about tours with him).
Jack has an incredible wealth of knowledge in history, archaeology and anthropology yet at the same time, he can make it all accessible and entertaining the way only a great storyteller can. Since our tour, whenever I walk through the streets of Bloomsbury, I feel like I could still see some of the characters and places he had brought to life for us. Nothing short of magic.
