After living in London for six months, this was by far one of my favorite places to visit. The area surrounding the houses of parliament are beautifully constructed, the garden areas are well-kept, and the views are incredible. You can fit a lot into one day by visiting the houses of parliament. My only warning is to beware of the... More

We had a guided tour of the beautiful and historic Houses of Parliament, followed by afternoon tea on the Terrace. It is such a fascinating place and the tour was interesting and educational with light-hearted moments. We had some time to wander around by ourselves and the had a lovely tea on the Terrace, on the bank of the Thames.... More

Made friends with an English bobbie at the gate and he got us in to a visit within Parliament to the House of Lords. They were debating, of all things, the use of plastic bags! We had already seen that some grocery stores were charging for plastic bags so it made for an interesting afternoon.

We are Group of U3A members invited by our Local MP Alun Cairns to visit on the 9th June. Due to problems with our original coach company letting us down on the day, the replacement company did marvelously to get us there just 2 1/2 hours later than planned. We were met by Alun and his Parliamentary secretary Katherine Pearce... More

Our guide on this 2 hour tour was excellent and would recommend it to everyone visiting. However, I would not bother with the afternoon tea on the terrace. At £27.50 each I thought this was far too expensive for the food we had.

Staying in Westminster

Neighbourhood Profile
Westminster
If you only had an afternoon to experience London on a grand scale, Westminster would be a wise place to start. The ornate Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey sit adjacent at a corner of Parliament Square, and a short stroll along The Mall leads to Buckingham Palace. Trafalgar Square and Nelson's Column are just up the road as well. As captivating as the architecture is, the wonders of Mother Nature are highlights of the area too. St James's Park (arguably London's loveliest), the expansive Green Park, and pedestrian friendly tree lined paths along the river showcase the exquisite manicure provided by English gardeners. Just beyond the landmarks and the gorgeous outdoor spaces, quiet residential squares and age old local pubs offer a more subdued take on this global seat of power in the heart of London.
