Went later in the day and came by Uber clipper to Greenwich and then took DLR to Pontoon Dock . It’s much further out of the city than I imagined . We were on the North side of the river in the Thames Barrier Park Unfortunately there are no facilities available at the moment and the visitors /information centre is in the south side ( also closed ) so we couldn’t actually get on the Barrier to visit Worth a trip out there under normal circumstances. Covid restrictions make it a little more challenging and my advice would be to go in the morning DLR from Pontoon Dock back to Bank is only 19mins …

We were starting the Thames Path from this point and had hoped to get background information on the barrier (and a coffee) before starting the walk. Unfortunately quite limited opening hours so if you are visiting specifically for the barrier it is worth checking online first.

Great spot for lunch in the Cafe and you can watch the barriers move, we choose the right day when they were closing all the gates and we went to the information centre too, we really enjoyed our visit as we walked down the Thames path a really great day

The Thames Barrier is even more amazing in person than it is in pictures. It is on the Thames path and there is a nice playground near the visitor center. There is a modest admission fee to museum and the film is very informative. Its as if we are inside the workings of the barriers and the history of the design and construction is fascinating. Probably interesting to kids 12+ in general. Gift shop is small but comprehensive and the cafe is first rate. The chef makes his own pastry for the excellent savory and sweet pies. The website has a lot of good information, including the dates when the barrier is raised for testing.…

Didn't think we would need to phone to find out if the information centre was open on a Monday morning, but staggeringly it was shut, as it is Tuesday and Wednesday as well! How ridiculous. It's shut for ages for refurbishment and then only open part of the week! Furthermore, how long does it take bureaucrats to approve a lift? Well, in this case weeks obviously as anyone in a wheelchair or riding a mobility scooter is denied any way of seeing the barrier! How stupid is that!? If you can climb up stairs well you can see it. It's a feat of engineering and two sections were partly open or closed however you car to view it. The footpath was chained shut so that prevented walking through for a different view.…
