The area
Neighbourhood: Southwark
Even before the arrival of the instantly iconic Shard, the riverside scene in Southwark had moved well beyond any up-and-coming phase of development. For quite some time, locals and out-of-towners alike have loved browsing the boutiques of Bermondsey High Street, foraging through the bounteous stalls at centuries old foodie haven Borough Market, and flocking to the banks of the Thames to enjoy some of Britain's biggest attractions such as Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. Despite Southwark's many popular draws, instant calm can be achieved easily by turning down almost any side street. For more urban buzz, a quick stroll across famed bridges like the pedestrianized Millennium Bridge or the ever photogenic Tower Bridge yields access to the very core of Central London. And with London Bridge Station as this neighbourhood's main transportation hub, getting across town (or to anywhere in England for that matter) is a relative breeze.

This is a truly shocking hotel
The air conditioning does not work at all
The first night there was no cold air so very difficult to sleep
After many calls they assured me it was fixed
I got to my room and the temperature was fine but the air conditioner was banging like crazy
After two attempts they moved me to another room
They have only a few members of staff and it’s not in anyway anything like a real hotel
Hopeless

The whole experience from check in has been an absolute dream. All of the staff totally get the concept of customer care and comfort, housekeeping, F+B staff and reception, the management team are visible and very hands on. The rooms are well appointed, great size and the amenities within are first rate, spacious and bright, the bed was so comfortable. The furnishing are functional and high quality, great art in the bed room. The internet is fast and free. Their gym is well equipped.
The public areas are full of art work, not the scary sort of art work that has 'hidden meaning', is 'abstract' but the kind that is easy to look at, not prissy and over exaggerated.
Across the Blackfriars Bridge and with in easy waking distance of the City and St Paul's, the Tate Modern is a hop step and jump away, so close. Southwark is vibrant and happening and the hotel is close to Southwark tube station
Eat in the hotel, you will not regret this. The experience was really good. The menu is creative. Try the Cataplana of monkfish - its a kind of stew but eat mouthful is a treat.
We had dirty gin martinis - just right and make with absolute pride by the barman
Would I come back again? - dead right I would.

The southern bank of the Thames, between Blackfriars and London Bridge is a part of Southwark district, which name came from the medieval expression “the Banke syde” which means “street along the bank of the river Thames”. It is a rapidly developing area, with many interesting venues and a great walk along the river.

On the other side of the Thames from the City of London, and extends from Blackfriars Bridge in the West to Southwark Cathedral in the East.
This area (from Middle English 'the Banke syde', meaning 'street along the bank of the Thames') became prominent in the 16th Century because of its location outside the jurisdiction of the City. It became the place to be entertained, whether your fancy was bull or bear baiting, theatre, brothel houses or all manner of other activities prohibited in the City.
Nowadays it houses many modern buildings as well as riverside attractions such as a recreation of the Globe Theatre and the huge Tate Modern art gallery, which used to be Bankside Power Station belching out smoke from its tall chimney.
There are great riverside views over to the modern and not so modern buildings of the City.

One of my favourite London walks. So much to see and do. Perfect for all the family including:Southwark Cathedral; Golden Hind; The Globe Theatre; The Clink; Tate Modern; Millennium Bridge and over to St Paul's Cathedral. You could spend all day in the area. Lots of reasonably priced places to eat and get refreshments. Use the buses to get around too. Love the area and never tire of it.

I love this area of London , there is so much to see and do, the modern mixes in with the old. I love going to see plays at Shakespeare's Globe, love grabbing something to eat at Borough Market and simply strolling along the river bank.

During my visits to London I have usually tried to visit new areas that I have previously missed; this is one and this time I took a long walk all the way from Tower Bridge to the London Eye. Here it feels like a 'new' part of London that contains many things to (re) discover. Further afield you will find both Tate Modern and Shakespeare's rebuilt theater. Just Bankside, on the other hand, contains most hotels, restaurants and offices and may not be so remarkable, but this part of London has received a renaissance and is well worth a full day visit.

I highly recommend this Hilton Hotel due to its newness and location. Stayed there for 3 days would gladly repeat. Make sure you get the breakfast deal with the room to save money.
The only issue encountered was a kid crowded indoor pool where all chairs were taken by kids, who stayed in pool and didn't even use them. I blame inconsiderate parents and lack of hotel pool management to see what is going on.

What's the closest airport for travelling to Bankside?
Written 4 May 2019
London City Airport is the closest, but will have limited destinations. Gatwick or Heathrow May be better bets. From both you can take the train into London and either go by taxi or underground to the hotel.
