The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Chelsea
Wealth courses through The King's Road, Chelsea's upmarket artery of West London life packed with shops, eateries and glitzy nightspots. For people-watching at its best and luxury retail therapy that's largely unrivalled, this area cannot be missed. But if this showy street starts to overwhelm or a moment of price tag shock sends you reeling, a quick detour down pretty much any of many King's Road veins will reveal a quieter side of Chelsea. Here the stately Royal Hospital hosts its world-famous flower show, and the Thames rolls along at a lazy pace, with leafy Battersea Park and its Peace Pagoda beckoning from across the river.

After an expensive morning watching my wife spending all our money, we (wife+2kids) saw a chance to have a kind of impromptu picnic at a small grassy square called Duke of York, at the end of King's Road. It just so happened to also have an open-air food market going on. So we milled around for while, each choosing a favoured nosh (all excellent value) and the sat under the portico of the adjacent Saatchi gallery, dining in beautiful warm sunshine. There was a carnival-like atmosphere and we all had a lovely. I highly recommend it.

Many thanks for your lovely review Auberon, you experienced exactly what we set out to achieve when creating Duke of York Square. When you next come back, do try the lovely bars, restaurants and cafes on Pavilion Road, located at the side of Peter Jones. We look forward to welcoming you to Chelsea again soon.

Excellent food market where you can enjoy oyster with champagne in the open air and taste of kind of different foods from various countries. The atmosphere is absolutely fantastic and the Chelsea people going there are all elegant casual but interesting to watch. I never miss it on Saturday morning when i am in London.

A group of friends and I spent a brilliant afternoon watching the men's Wimbledon final on a big screen at Duke of York Square.

Everything was superbly organised, including the wristband entrance, the grass area to picnic on, and toilet signage. You could leave and return to the picnic area whenever you wanted, and there were plenty of eateries and local shops nearby to get food and drink.

The atmosphere was brilliant and the screening experience was super memorable and expertly managed. Wherever you sat, you got a good view!

We'll be back next year!

Just one thing for next year - more toilets please!

Such a disappointment … menu was uninspiring and limited. Two of us ordered wine and it was served in small tumblers like you’d get in a cheap hotel, we asked for it to be served in stemmed wine glasses but they said they didn’t have any! This is a restaurant off of Sloane Sq .. no wine glasses!
Food was good … prawns in a tomato sauce and a pizzeta.
Ladies toilets were in a really sorry state … again … this is a big restaurant with outside dining area and the loos are what you’d expect in a back street bar somewhere.
When there are so many great places to eat and drink in that area we won’t be going back.

Thank-you for your review Julie and sorry to hear you've had a poor experience, however it is unclear which restaurant you are reviewing. Duke of York Square is the retail destination at the end of the King's Road and next to the Saatchi Gallery. If you have had a poor experience at one of the restaurants here, please can you email us at marketing@cadogan.co.uk. Many thanks and we look forward to hearing from you.

Nice shops and a good vibe to the place. It’s very “Chelsea” with high end prices. Nice place to stroll around. Clean and safe.

Depending on the direction you come from, you will either discover the Square through narrow alleys or through the large open space which has the curvy Vardo cafe/restaurant at its heart with space for well-spaced external tables and chairs.

Beyond that is a grassy area, presumably the former parade ground of the original Duke of York's Headquarters built in 1801 and now with the Saatchi Gallery overlooking it.

The complex has been enhanced with sympathetic new buildings which house a great selection of chic shops and restaurants including Bluemint, Zara, Dermalogica, Partidges and Comptoir Libanais, Polpo and the Saatchi Gallery Bar and Brasserie.

Even on a Sunday morning, when King's Road was quiet, there was activity with people enjoying coffee and snacks around Vardo.

Visited on a Tuesday in February half term. Small entrace on Kings Road, opens up to fairly small open air group of shops. Buildings look new. Pleasant mall, mostly designer shops, clothes, beauty, restaurants.
